Abstract

Dental and oral health in Indonesia is still a health problem that needs attention. The most concerning thing is that as many as 93% of school-age children experience dental and mouth problems. This can be caused by a lack of knowledge and awareness of dental hygiene. One of the efforts made to increase knowledge and awareness of dental hygiene is by holding an educational activity called the "School Health Program". This activity was carried out in several schools, one of which was TK ITS. This activity began with the Training of Trainer Program given by dentists to teacher cadres and parents of students/students/students about the benefits of good oral hygiene and how to brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Dentists provide educational materials using power point media and educational videos through the zoom application. There were 5 cadres consisting of 2 teachers and 3 guardians of students who attended this activity. After that, the teacher cadres and parents of the students/students disseminate information to other parents of students/students so that they can become mentors to their children to apply good and correct behavior of brushing their teeth twice a day for 21 days with the method recorded on the given calendar. The hope is that after this program ends, students at ITS Kindergarten have the behavior of maintaining oral hygiene by brushing their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

Abstract

Background: Enterococcus faecalis is considered the most common cause of root canal failure and persistent infection. The standard irrigation solution is 5.25% NaOCl which has drawbacks, such as causing inflammation in the periapical area. New antibacterial agents from natural materials with similar antibacterial properties to chemicals have been developed. Avicennia marina contains flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and avicequinone, which can inhibit bacterial metabolism. Objective: to determine the effect of Avicennia marina leaf extract with various concentrations on the antibacterial inhibitory power of Enterococcus faecalis as a root canal irrigation material. Materials and Methods: The samples were divided into six groups: K+ (5.25% NaOCl), K- (distilled water), P1 (7.5%), P2 (12.5%), P3 (17.5%), and P4 (22.5%). The leaves of Avicennia marina were extracted using ethanol maceration with a rotary evaporator to obtain a concentrated extract, which was then diluted with distilled water to the desired concentrations. The antibacterial effect was tested using the disk diffusion method by applying 0.01 ml of each test sample to sterile paper disks with a sterile micropipette. Results: Inhibition zones were observed as follows: K+ (21.67 mm), P1 (0 mm), P2 (10.50 mm), P3 (13.50 mm), and P4 (14.50 mm). Mann Whitney tests showed significant differences (p < 0.05) between K+ and P1, P2, P3 and P4, as well as between P3 and P4. Conclusion: Avicennia marina leaf extract had antibacterial effects against Enterococcus faecalis at concentrations of 12.5%, 17.5%, and 22.5%.

Abstract

SLB YPAC Surabaya is a school for students with disabilities, particularly those with cerebral palsy, who experience motor limitations and therefore require specially adapted tools for maintaining oral health. To support oral hygiene, a three-sided toothbrush was used, allowing simultaneous cleaning of the buccal, occlusal, and lingual/palatal surfaces, with the handle modified using child-safe clay that is inexpensive, easy to shape, and readily available. Oral hygiene was assessed using plaque index scores with a plaque detector and halitosis scores with a halitosis detector, and both students and their assistants were taught how to create the customized toothbrush handle. Parents’ knowledge was measured through pre- and post-tests, while students’ oral health was evaluated through plaque and halitosis indices. Wilcoxon tests showed significant differences in parental knowledge (p=0.000) and in plaque and halitosis scores before and after using the modified toothbrush (p=0.002; p<0.05), indicating clear improvement. Therefore, the use of a three-sided toothbrush with a clay-based customized handle is effective in enhancing the oral hygiene of students with cerebral palsy.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Streptococcus mutans in the most frequent microbiota that causes pulp necrosis because of caries. The microorganism that is colonized and embedded in the biofilm matrix is resistant to antimicrobials compared to planktonic cells. Root canal sterilization materials must have good biocompatibility with tissues. Nannochloropsis oculata is an algae that contains various compounds such as terpenoids, alkaloids, and flavonoids that have potential as antibacterial and antioxidant and can be used as alternative to root canal sterilization. Method: This research was true experimental laboratory research with post-test only control group design. The antibacterial potential of Nannochloropsis oculata was tested using the biofilm method, divided into 5 groups. The control group was: K- (aquadest), K+ (calcium hydroxide), and the treatment group was given Nannochloropsis oculata: P1 (0.625%), P2 (1.25%), and P3 (2.5 %). Congo Red method test was to determine the formation of biofilm that shows black strains on agar. While biofilm test with Microtiter Plate Assay to measure the value of biofilm that were inhibited in Optical Density (OD) value in the ELISA Reader. The lower the value, the more biofilm inhibited, with OD value, inhibition percentage could counted Result: The result of all treatment groups were increasing in percentage inhibition value shows inhibition in biofilm growth (p <0.05). Conclusion: Nannochloropsis oculata had an antibacterial effect on the biofilm of Streptococcus mutans

Abstract

Background: E glass fiber dental is a fiber that is often used in dentistry. The availability of E glass fiber in Indonesia is still very limited. Various types of non-dental glass fiber materials are found in the market as engineering materials with relatively cheap prices so that they are expected to be used as an alternative to E glass fiber dental, which one of is coconut fiber. The composition of non-dental glass fiber is almost the same as that of dental E glass fiber. The composition affects the mechanical properties and chemical properties of the fiber. Glass fiber compositions such as Na2O and K2O will increase water resistance. Method: This study was conducted using a post test only control group design. The material used in this study was a composite of coconut coir fiber. The subjects of the coco fiber composite were divided into 4 groups for solubility test based on ISO 4049. The results obtained were analyzed using one-way ANOVA (p = 0.000). The results showed the lowest mean component solubility (%) was in the coconut fiber composite group A (0.476±0.03) and the highest yield was in the coco coir fiber composite D (0.6±0.01). Results: The results of the one-way ANOVA test showed a significant difference in the coco fiber composite in the solubility of the components (p
