Abstract

Background: Candida albicans grows in the gastrointestinal tract as a normal microflora that may cause intestinal candidiasis, characterized by formation of biofilm and inflammation. Candida is recognized by toll-like receptors (TLRs). This study aimed to explore the relationship between intestinal TLR 2 and TLR 4 expression levels in candidiasis at each phase of inflammation. Methods: An experimental study was performed using a simple randomized sampling on 30 male Wistar rats divided into a control and a treatment group. Each group was inoculated with Candida albicans. Dysbiosis conditions were designed in the treatment group using multiple antibiotics and on day 5 the rats were injected with subcutaneous cortisone acetate. The groups were terminated in five different times (days 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35). On the termination day, intestinal tissue was isolated and the TLR 2 and TLR 4 expression were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. The data were analyzed by parametric test with SPSS (p<0.05) and completed by post-hoc test Least Significance Difference (LSD) to compare pairs of groups. Results: The expression of TLR 2 and TLR 4 between control and treatment groups showed significant differences (p=0.005). In the treatment group, there was a gradual increase in the TLR2 and TLR 4 expressions.  Positive expression of TLR appeared more in the submucosal or basal area than apical surface. The treatment group showed the highest expression of both TLR2 (82.37%) and TLR4 (87.40%) on termination day 35.Conclusions: Inflammation caused by intestinal candidiasis can result in increased expression of intestinal TLR2 and 4 contributing to an increased risk of biofilm formation.

Abstract

Abstract

A high-fat diet leads to increasing intake of fatty acid in liver, making it susceptible to lipid peroxidation and free radical release. Malondialdehyde is a common biomarker for lipid peroxidation. Increasing free radicals should be balanced with the antioxidants in order to prevent oxidative stress. This study aim was to measured the effectiveness of bay leaf extract (Eugenia polyantha) in lowering MDA levels in hyperlipidemia rats. This study was an experimental study using 20 male rats divided into 4 groups. All rats were induced hyperlipidemia with high-fat diet for 12 days. KP was sacrificed in the next day after the feeding of high fat. KN administered by aquades 2 ml / day (peroral / po), P1 administered by bay leaves extract 1.08 g / day (p.0) and P2 received simvastatin treatment dose 0,0018 g / 150 g BB / day (p. 0). The results showed MDA levels in KP, KN, P1 and P2 were respectively 7.79; 7.07; 6.49; and 7.21 nmol / ml. One way ANOVA test showed p value was 0,073 (

Abstract

Abstract

Undernutrition is responsible for nearly 50% child deaths, especially in poor countries. Approximately 25% of toddlers worldwide experience stunted which is associated with mortality, cognitive impairment and reduced productivity. The mission of the Kementrian Kesehatan is to improve the level of public health through community empowerment (Posyandu). especially in Surabaya with the empowerment of Kader Surabaya Hebat (KSH). Wonokromo District, with an area of 8.42 Km2 and occupying 2.55% of the area of Surabaya city, has 3 access to primary health facilities, covering 6 sub-districts (Kelurahan). The ratio of community health centers per Wonokromo sub-district is 1.9, this shows that the coverage of primary health access in Wonokromo is quite good. KSH knowledge needs to be improved through education, short courses and monitoring. The aim of this Pengabdian  activity is to increase knowledge regarding monitoring the toddlers development, especially in handling stunting toddlers. This activity was able to increase the knowledge of KSH as shown by an increase in the highest score of 100, from 10% to 54.2%. Increasing KSH knowledge is a first step so that it can be applied to the community, namely toddlers in the Wonokromo health center area, so that monitoring of stunting toddlers can run and can prevent or even reduce the stunting rate in Wonokromo.

Abstract

Background: Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is an inflammatory disease in the colon, due to the disruption of the interaction between the immune response and the intestinal microbiota in a genetically susceptible host. The imbalance between commensal and pathogenic intestinal microbiota promotes inflammation. This study aims to explore the efficacy of pumpkin seed oil and SCFAs in maintaining the intestinal microbiota in UC model mice. Methods: Four groups, K1, K2, K3, and K4, as health control given distilled water (K1); K2, K3, and K4 induced UC with 2% DSS, followed by administration of Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs) (K3), supplementation of SCFAs and pumpkin seed oil (K4). The number of colonies measured microbiota diversity (log CFU/mL/g) in NA, EMB, MRSA, and McConkey media. Hemoglobin and hematocrit were also measured to assess anemia. Results: The average number of bacterial colonies that grew on NA, EMB, MRSA, and McConkey media in K4 was 7.65, 5.78, 7.85, and 6.20, respectively, and the average HB and hematocrit levels were 14.2 g/dL and 42%, respectively. There was greater microbiota diversity and lactobacillus bacteria in UC rats given pumpkin seed oil and SCFAs, with fewer Enterobacteriaceae and E. coli than in the UC model. The increase in HB and hematocrit levels also showed the same trend. Conclusion: Pumpkin seed oil at a dose of 100 mg/kg and SCFAs can be a prospective biotherapy for maintaining the balance of the natural microbiota and increasing HB levels.

Abstract

High doses of paracetamol create necrosis in the liver and produce free radicals. When liver function decreased in a long time, it will lead to severe liver damage and it will be irreversible. Rhizome of Curcuma zedoaria has the potential effect as an antioxidant, it is assumed that  its properties inhibit the formation of free radicals which formed from toxic doses of paracetamol. The aim of this study was to examine the histological structure of the liver and to determine MDA levels in the administration of C. zedoaria toxic dose and paracetamol on the Rattus norvegicus. The study was used twenty-four rats divided into four groups (positive control: CMC 0.5%; negative control: paracetamol 1.35g/kg body weight; treatment group 1 (T1): C. zedoaria 105 mg/200g and paracetamol 1.35g/kg Body weight 2 hours later, and treatment group 2 (T2): paracetamol 1.35g/ kg Body weight and C. zedoaria 105 mg/200g 2 hours later).  The Kruskall-Wallis test results showed MDA level did not significantly different between groups (p = 0.087). Hepatocellular changes were observed descriptively with Hematoxylin-eosin staining. Positive control showed greater hepatocellular changes rather than other groups, hepatocyte cells were enlarged with cytoplasm showing eosinophilic granules infiltrates, enlarged irregular nuclei, nucleolus prominent, there are many necrosis cells.
