Abstract

This study aims to analyse cultural structures in novels using Lévi-Strauss's structural anthropology theory, particularly the concept of binary oppositions such as life versus death, tradition versus modernity, and social obligations versus individual freedom. Using qualitative descriptive research methods, the analysis shows that tradition in this novel is not merely a tradition, but also a structure of thinking that is inherited and continuously negotiated. The results of the study show that custom and culture have an influence on an individual's personal life, as well as how social status can be influenced by custom and culture. The results also reveal several binary oppositions, ranging from the relationship between life and death, as well as custom and modernisation. Thus, this novel illustrates how culture is not static but continues to evolve within social dynamics.

Abstract

This research aims to find out how the image of women is reconstructed in the novel Gadis Pantai by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The research method used in this analysis is descriptive qualitative, focusing on understanding social phenomena in the novel using a feminist literary approach. Data collection techniques are carried out by reading repeatedly and noting important points of the data found to avoid errors in collecting data information. The novel reveals in depth how gender and violence against women are understood in traditional Javanese society, and emphasizes the urgency of gender equality and the protection of women's rights in the modern era. Women are often marginalized in Javanese life, especially in daily tasks and in the social hierarchy. In addition, the novel also depicts violence against women, both physical and psychological.

Abstract

This study analyzes the socio-political critique embedded in Remy Sylado’s poem Lebih Baik Mati Muda through Friedrich Schleiermacher’s hermeneutic framework, specifically integrating grammatical and psychological interpretations. As a pioneering figure in the Indonesian Mbeling poetry movement, Sylado strategically employed colloquial language, provocative diction, and emotionally charged imagery to confront systemic corruption, authoritarianism, and moral decay during Indonesia’s New Order regime. Using qualitative descriptive methodology, the analysis first examines the poem’s grammatical elements such as diction, rhetorical structures, and repetition to reveal how linguistic deviation amplifies the poet's socio-political critique. Subsequently, psychological interpretation uncovers deeper emotional dimensions, highlighting how the narrative voice conveys generational despair and moral urgency. Findings indicate that Sylado’s recurrent phrase Lebih baik aku mati muda ("Better that I die young") symbolizes an existential and ethical ultimatum, articulating a powerful stance against oppressive societal conditions. The study contributes methodologically by applying Schleiermacher’s dual hermeneutic approach to Indonesian protest poetry, theoretically by deepening scholarly understanding of poetry's role in social resistance, and practically by underscoring poetry’s educational potential in fostering critical literacy and civic engagement. Future research is recommended to expand comparative and multimodal analyses of protest poetry, enhancing understanding of its cognitive and emotional effects across different contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the short story Perempuan Buta Tanpa Ibu Jari by Intan Paramaditha using Gérard Genette's narratological approach, focusing on five main aspects: order, duration, frequency, mood, and narrative voice. Using a qualitative descriptive method with a combination of re-reading. The analysis shows that this short story uses analepsis (flashback) to build a non-linear narrative structure, creating a dramatic and immersive effect. Duration manipulation lengthens or summarises certain scenes to highlight emotional aspects and tensions in the story, while repetition of events reinforces narrative meaning and symbolism. Shifts in mood create an emotional contrast between introspective reflection and narrative tension, while the use of an autodiegetic narrator allows the reader to experience the story through the subjective perspective of the main character. Thus, the narrative techniques applied in this short story not only build a dynamic plot, but also enrich the thematic and emotional depth of the story

Abstract

This study aims to analyse Ahmad Tohari's novel Lingkar Tanah Lingkar Air through a postcolonial approach to reveal the representation of identity conflicts and resistance as a result of colonialism and neocolonialism. Using text analysis methods and the postcolonial theoretical framework of Edward Said, Homi K. Bhabha, and Gayatri Spivak, this study identifies how the characters in the novel deal with ideological, cultural, and political colonial pressures and develop complex forms of resistance, both physical, cultural, and spiritual. The results of the study show that the identity conflict in the novel is not merely a personal conflict but a reflection of the struggle between local heritage and colonial hegemony. Resistance is depicted as a collective process to reclaim power and cultural autonomy. The conclusion of this study affirms that the postcolonial approach not only enriches the interpretation of this novel but also opens up space for a deeper understanding of identity struggles and resistance strategies in the context of contemporary Indonesian literature.
