Abstract

Several studies found that the probiotic bacterias such as Lactobacillus acidophilus La5 and Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12 could prevent glycemia and control the blood lipid profiles. Currently, a probiotic product such as yogurt is not preferable by some consumers since the taste is sour. Therefore, this study was conducted to develop milkshakes supplemented by probiotics Lactobacillus acidophilus La5 and Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12 which are expected to be more acceptable and have a beneficial effect with the addition of prebiotics and soluble fiber glucomannan. This study aims to determine the effect of synbiotic shakes on fasting blood glucose levels and lipid profiles in hyperglycemia Wistar rat models. The study design was a pre-posttest controlled group with 48 male Wistar rats divided into 8 groups, namely the healthy control group (I); hyperglycemia control group (II); group III that received metformin; group IV that received synbiotic shake with La5 + FOS; group V that received synbiotic shake La5 + inulin; group VI that received synbiotic shake Bb12 + FOS; group VII that received synbiotic shake Bb12 + inulin; and group VIII that received synbiotic shake La5 + Bb12 + FOS. The dose of the intervention was 3.6 ml/day with an intervention duration of 28 days. The results showed that the differences in blood glucose levels were not significant (p> 0.05) except for groups IV and VI that experienced a significant increase (p <0.05). The differences in lipid profiles showed insignificant changes in LDL levels except in groups IV and V, a significant increase in HDL levels (p <0.05) in group V and VI, and insignificant change in triglycerides except in group VI. It can be concluded that the administration of synbiotic shakes with a variety of prebiotics Lactobacillus acidophilus La5 and Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12 for 4 weeks were able to maintain fasting blood glucose levels and lipid profiles in hyperglycemic rats.

Abstract

Previous studies on maternal health have highlighted the need to improve health literacy, particularly among women from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Some crucial factors for improving maternal health literacy are midwife capacity and systems support that can help ensure women's ability and motivation to access timely health services. However, the extent of roles midwives need and the system that must be developed require further elaboration. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate approaches for enhancing maternal health literacy in low-income pregnant women. Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, the systematic search was conducted on two databases: PubMed and ScienceDirect. All English articles published from 2011 to 2023 were searched using the keywords pregnant, antenatal, prenatal, perinatal, midwife, health literacy, midwife-led care, helpline, and photo novel. Of the 1539 articles, 15 were included for final assessment. The results suggest that improving maternal health literacy among low-income pregnant women is related to empowering these women, midwives as frontline care providers engaging with them, and the health care system as a health literacy organization. In conclusion, improving the healthcare system and strengthening midwives' leadership as proximal caregivers is crucial for improving maternal health literacy among low-income pregnant mothers. These efforts could be realized with support from government roles, educational institutions, and professional associations.

Abstract

Introduction: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are not only caused by genetic factors, but it can also be due to behavioral factors, such as low physical activity, unhealthy diet, and lack of knowledge on nutrition and healthy lifestyle. An integrated health post (“pos pembinaan terpadu” abbreviated as posbindu) is a community-based program in Indonesia which aims to reduce the incidence of NCDs by promoting a healthy lifestyle and conducting monthly health screening. However, since the recruitment of the post’s cadres is voluntary, most of them do not have formal education on health and may not be familiar with health screening tools. Thus, improving their knowledge and skills on this subject is critical. Methods: The Kelas MASK project aimed to increase the knowledge and skills of posbindu cadres, especially on the risk, prevention, and basic screening tools for NCDs. The projects consisted of lecture, demonstrations, dan practices. The knowledge and skills on anthropometric measurements, blood pressure and simple biochemical analysis were evaluated based on the score obtained from the pre- and post- tests. Results: The Kelas MASK project increased the cadres’ knowledge, shown by the increase of the average post-test score compared to the pre-test score (increased by 4.03, p-value = 0.0000).Conclusion: All in all, the Kelas MASK project significantly increased the knowledge and skills of posbindu cadres on the prevention of NCDs.

Abstract

Purpose: Obesity is an excessive accumulation of fat due to an imbalance of nutrient intake with energy used over a long time. One of the factors that can increase the incidence of obesity is a lack of knowledge about obesity prevention. Knowledge about health affects attitudes as a long-term result of exposure to information. The generated attitude can be a positive or negative response to general objects. Behavior is formed because it arises from intentions that were previously influenced by attitudes, subjective norms, and perceptions. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, subjective norms, and perceptions of obesity prevention behavior among students in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Methods: This research was conducted using an observational descriptive cross-sectional design among students in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The study sample size was 384 respondents. Independent variables are knowledge, attitudes, subjective norms, and perceptions of obesity prevention. The dependent variable is the behavior of obesity prevention. All variables were measured using researchers' questionnaires. Bivariate analysis used chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests. Multivariate analysis used logistic regression. Results: Bivariate analysis of knowledge and behavior showed no relationship (p>0.05), but analysis result of attitudes, subjective norms, and perceptions with behavior of obesity prevention showed a significant relationship (p<0.05). The coefficient of determination in multivariate analysis was 0.086, indicating all variables studied in influence analysis 8.6% behavior of obesity prevention. Conclusions: There is no relationship between knowledge and behavior of obesity, but there is a significant relationship between attitude, subjective norm, and perception of behavior of obesity prevention among students in the Special Region of Yogyakarta.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the relationship between factors of physical activity and fruit and vegetable intake with the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Temanggung District. Methods: This study employed an observational analytic design using an incidence density case-control study, with a 1:1 comparison of cases and controls, without matching. Research data retrieval is based on the health center surveillance report and direct interviews with respondents. This research was conducted in 10 health centers located in the Temanggung Regency area of Central Java Province, which had a higher incidence of cases. The sample in this study consisted of 150 respondents, divided into 75 case respondents and 75 control respondents. Results: The results of bivariate analysis showed that there was a relationship between age factors, family history (OR: 2.13; 95% CI: 1.05-4.31; p-value=0.02), obesity (OR: 2.15; 95% CI: 0.99-4.69; p-value=0.03), physical activity and eating fruit vegetables (OR: 5.02; 95% CI: 2.35-10.84; p-value=0.00) with the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus while the sex and occupational factors had no association with the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The multivariate analysis revealed a relationship between family history, physical activity, and fruit and vegetable intake, as well as the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus, in the final model. Conclusion: Low physical activity and a diet low in vegetables can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus. Intensive and routine counseling is necessary to increase community knowledge and establish more health services, such as Posbindu, in each village to maximize the early detection of diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Purpose: Annually, 15% to 45% of newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) cases in children are observed. Among the contributing factors is an unhealthy diet, characterized by high sugar, fat, and carbohydrate intake, as well as low fiber consumption. This study aims to design an animated video of food traffic lights (FTL) for elementary school students to prevent DM. Methods: Qualitative research with a participatory action research approach. The informants were selected based on a purposive sampling technique. The inclusion criteria are fifth-grade students at Gondolayu Elementary School who are willing to participate as research subjects and possess good communication skills. Key informants included classroom teachers, physical education teachers, parents, and experts in media, nutrition, and health promotion. Data were collected through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews, and analyzed using OpenCode 4.03. Results: The students’ problems include risk factors such as frequent consumption of sweet foods, a family history of DM, and a lack of information about DM at school. The design of the FTL video was developed based on a preliminary analysis of students’ needs and interests. The video contains two main components: educational content on DM and the FTL concept. Conclusion: The animated food traffic lights video can elicit a positive response from students, parents, and teachers at school. The design of an FTL animation video must consider the needs, target character, and detailed components within the video.
