Abstract

This study aims to analyze the readiness of farmers in Parakan Village to utilize digital platforms for marketing agricultural products. The methods used include interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), mentoring, and the distribution of questionnaires to 30 members of the Mawar Farmer Group. Findings indicate a shift in farmers' behavior from relying on middlemen to independently marketing their products through social media. However, survey results show low levels of information access, active participation, and understanding of digital innovation. Innovation and digital literacy are key challenges, although some farmers expressed a willingness to learn. Continuous mentoring and collaboration between farmers, academics, and the government are essential to support an inclusive and sustainable digital transformation in the agricultural sector.

Abstract

Fungal infections, such as those caused by Curvularia, can interfere with the vegetative growth and reduce the quality of oil palm seedlings, particularly in the main nursery phase. One solution to improve resistance to pathogens and support vegetative growth is by applying the right foliar fertilizer. This study aimed to determine the effect of Kenfolan foliar fertilizer application on vegetative growth and the level of Curvularia infection in oil palm seedlings during the main nursery phase. The study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments of Kenfolan fertilizer concentrations: 0 ml/L (P1), 1 ml/L (P2), 2 ml/L (P3), 3 ml/L (P4), and 4 ml/L (P5), each repeated three times. The parameters measured included seedling height, stem diameter, number of fronds, and the percentage of Curvularia infection. Data analysis was performed using ANOVA followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at a 5% significance level. The results showed that treatment P4 (3 ml/L) provided the best vegetative growth, with seedling height reaching 40.07 cm, stem diameter of 1.58 cm, and an average of 4.25 fronds. Additionally, treatments P3 (2 ml/L) and P4 (3 ml/L) successfully suppressed Curvularia infection, with no infection found in these treatments. In contrast, treatment P1 (control) showed the highest infection level of 33%, while P5 (4 ml/L) increased the infection compared to P3 and P4. Based on the results, the application of Kenfolan foliar fertilizer at a dose of 3 ml/L (P4) was the most effective in improving vegetative growth and suppressing Curvularia infection in oil palm seedlings in the main nursery phase.

Abstract

One of the common pests found in oil palm is the nettle caterpillar (Setothosea asigna), which can consume between 300 to 500 cm² of leaves per individual. A single oil palm tree may host between 5 to 10 of these caterpillars. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of fogging in controlling Setothosea asigna infestations on oil palm trees of varying heights at PT Socfindo, Matapao Estate, North Sumatra. The research was conducted in two plantation blocks with different tree heights: block 49 with trees ranging from 9–12 meters and block 46 with trees ranging from 3–6 meters. Data collection involved an initial census to count caterpillars before fogging, followed by a post-fogging census to observe mortality rates. Data were analyzed using a t-test to compare the effectiveness of fogging between tall and short trees. The results showed that fogging was more effective on shorter trees, with an average mortality rate of 94%, compared to 90% on taller trees.

Abstract

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) is a key strategic commodity in Indonesia, playing a vital role in national exports and supporting various industries, including food production and renewable energy. Harvesting is a critical phase in oil palm cultivation, and its outcomes are significantly influenced by agronomic practices and environmental conditions, such as waterlogging. This study aimed to compare oil palm yields between waterlogged and non-waterlogged fields and to assess the statistical significance of any differences observed. The research was conducted at Tanjung Buluh Estate, Division 3 of PT Socfin Indonesia, located in Teluk Mengkudu, North Sumatra. A Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) was employed, focusing on a single factor: land condition (waterlogged vs. non-waterlogged). Results showed that the average fresh fruit bunch (FFB) yield from non-waterlogged plots was 109.4 kg, notably higher than the 78.9 kg recorded in waterlogged areas. A T-test yielded a P-value of 0.0929, approaching the 10% significance threshold, suggesting that waterlogging can potentially reduce oil palm productivity.

Abstract

This study aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of oil palm plantation workers at PT Kencana Sawit Indonesia in controlling pests through the application of the Early Warning Sistem (EWS). Based on findings from a Focus Group Discussion (FGD), four major challenges in pest control were identified: limited employee knowledge, inefficient task distribution, challenging topography, and delayed responses to pest outbreaks. An outreach program was conducted involving educational sessions supported by pre-test and post-test assessments. The results revealed a significant improvement in employee knowledge, with the average score increasing from 37% to 83%. Furthermore, participant satisfaction with the outreach activities reached 86.50%, as measured by a Likert scale survey. These results confirm that the EWS-based extension program successfully addressed critical knowledge gaps, fostered motivation among employees, and improved the overall efficiency of pest management practices. As a result, this initiative is expected to support more effective pest control and positively impact plantation productivity.

Abstract

Robusta coffee is one of Indonesia's leading commodities with high economic value. The flavor quality of coffee is greatly influenced by post-harvest processes, particularly drying methods and roasting temperatures. This study aims to determine the effects of two drying methods—Viss Dryer and Mason Dryer—and three roasting temperatures (190°C, 197°C, and 200°C) on the flavor profile of robusta coffee at PTPN I Regional 5 Kebun Malangsari. The evaluation was conducted through cupping tests by trained and untrained panelists. Parameters assessed included aroma, flavor, aftertaste, salt/acid, mouthfeel, and balance. The results showed that roasting temperature significantly affected aroma and flavor, with 200°C yielding the highest scores across panelist groups. Drying methods had a more limited effect; trained panelists preferred coffee dried with the Mason Dryer, whereas untrained panelists favored coffee dried with the Viss Dryer. Other parameters such as aftertaste, salt/acid, mouthfeel, and balance showed no significant differences among treatments. The optimal combination, based on trained panelists’ evaluations, was achieved using the Mason Dryer with a roasting temperature of 200°C. These findings underscore the importance of precise roasting temperature control in enhancing the sensory quality of robusta coffee and reveal how panelist experience levels can influence sensory preferences for drying methods. The results provide practical insights for post-harvest coffee processing to improve product quality and competitiveness in both national and international markets.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of chitosan-based liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) at various concentrations on the growth of cocoa seedlings (Theobroma cacao L.). The research was conducted at PTPN I Regional 5, Kendenglembu Plantation, Banyuwangi, for four months using a Completely Randomized Block Design (RCBD) with five treatments: P0 (control), P1 (10 mL/L), P2 (20 mL/L), P3 (30 mL/L), and P4 (40 mL/L). Growth parameters observed included plant height, stem diameter, and number of leaves up to 12 Weeks After Planting (WAP). ANOVA analysis showed no statistically significant effect of the treatments on any parameter. However, descriptive data indicated that concentrations of 20–30 mL/L tended to produce better growth: P2 (31.25 cm) had the highest plant height, P3 (6.93 mm) the highest stem diameter, and P1 (12 leaves) the most leaves. Chitosan potentially acts as a plant growth stimulator by increasing nitrogen availability and enhancing physiological processes such as photosynthesis. In contrast, a high concentration (40 mL/L) exhibited inhibitory effects. Although the differences were not statistically significant, concentrations of 20–30 mL/L could be recommended for practical application. The lack of significant results may be attributed to suboptimal concentrations, application frequency, or environmental conditions. Further studies are recommended to modify treatments and assess additional parameters such as biomass, root development, and leaf area to better understand the efficacy of chitosan fertilizer in cocoa seedling growth.

Abstract

Coffee production generates large amounts of solid waste, particularly coffee pulp, which can lead to environmental pollution if not properly managed. This study investigates the utilization of coffee pulp waste as a liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) and its effect on the growth of Arabica coffee seedlings (Coffea arabica L.). The experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with five treatments (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 ml/L of LOF) and five replications. Observations were made on seedling height, stem diameter, and number of leaves over a four-month period. The results showed that the application of LOF had a significant effect on plant height and number of leaves. The highest increase in height and leaf count was observed in the 30 ml/L treatment, while the 40 ml/L treatment showed a slight decline, possibly due to nutrient oversaturation. However, stem diameter did not show a statistically significant difference among treatments. Correlation analysis indicated a strong positive relationship between plant height and leaf number (r = 0.800), suggesting synchronized vegetative growth. These findings demonstrate the potential of coffee pulp LOF as an eco-friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers in coffee seedling nurseries. Further research is recommended to evaluate long-term effects and optimal dosages for different growth stages.
