Abstract

This study develops a community empowerment model for the creative economy by integrating local wisdom, education, institutional support, and technology while applying Value Stream Mapping (VSM) to reduce process inefficiencies affecting sustainable tourism. The research introduces Lean-based process optimization using engineering metrics such as cycle time, uptime, and defect ratio. Results indicate that Lean interventions reduced cycle time by 25.3%, increased uptime by 6.8%, and decreased waiting waste by 21.4%, reflecting significant operational improvements. A mixed-method approach combining Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and VSM was employed. From 110 creative industry actors, 86 respondents were selected using the Slovin formula. The findings reveal that education and skills (β = 0.336), institutional support (β = 0.352), and local wisdom (β = 0.249) significantly improve product innovation, which subsequently enhances income (β = 0.409) and sustainable tourism (β = 0.579). Technology showed no significant effect (β = 0.130; p = 0.413). The study demonstrates that combining socio-cultural empowerment with Lean-driven process redesign can strengthen innovation, operational performance, and sustainability in rural creative economies.

Abstract

Forest conservation partnerships are designed to reconcile protected-area management with local livelihood needs. This study analyzed the implementation, effectiveness, and economic impacts of the Forest Conservation Partnership Program in the Karang Gading and Langkat Timur Laut Wildlife Reserve, North Sumatra, Indonesia. A descriptive quantitative approach was used and supported by qualitative information from interviews, field observation, and program documents. Primary data were collected from 45 purposively selected respondents involved in or familiar with the partnership program. Program effectiveness was measured using a five-point Likert scale covering community participation, partnership institutions, area sustainability, implementation of conservation activities, and economic impacts. Income differences before and after the program were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test because the income data were not normally distributed. The results show that the overall program effectiveness index reached 85.92%, categorized as highly effective. The strongest dimensions were area sustainability (86.86%) and partnership institutions (86.78%), followed by conservation activity implementation (86.37%), community participation (84.98%), and economic impact (84.59%). Average monthly income increased from IDR 2,533,333 to IDR 3,258,889, with 44 respondents experiencing income gains and one respondent reporting no change. The Wilcoxon test indicated a statistically significant income difference (Z = -5.922; p < 0.001). The findings suggest that conservation partnerships can simultaneously strengthen mangrove conservation governance and improve community livelihoods, although market access, enterprise capacity, and benefit distribution require further policy support.

Abstract

Sustainable tourism development in Sipirok, South Tapanuli, requires a stronger connection between local creative products, community institutions, and destination branding. This community service article aims to describe the empowerment process for developing local-wisdom-based creative industries in Desa Situmba Julu and the Kawah Balerang ecotourism area. The program used a participatory empowerment method consisting of pre-implementation mapping, implementation through socialization, focus group discussion, product curation, and post-activity evaluation. Data were collected through observation, partner discussion, documentation, and reflection on program outputs. The activity produced five measurable outputs: identification of local creative assets, mapping of partner problems, curation of souvenir products such as T-shirts, caps, and key chains, formulation of BUMDes Marsada Mahita as an aggregator of production and promotion, and an integrative empowerment model linking local wisdom, creative products, digital branding, institutional strengthening, and sustainable tourism. The findings show that community actors already possess initial creative assets but still need assistance in product standardization, brand narration, cataloguing, inventory recording, and market distribution. The contribution of this program lies in transforming a conceptual tourism development model into a practical community-service model that can be replicated in tourism villages with similar natural and cultural resources.

Abstract

Coffee shop MSMEs have an important role in the economy and are a favorite business in Medan City. The purpose of this study is to analyze the level of modernity of entrepreneurial attitudes of coffee shop MSMEs fostered by the Medan City Cooperative Office, analyze the performance of coffee shop MSME success, and analyze the influence of modernity of entrepreneurial attitudes on the success of coffee shop MSMEs fostered by the Medan City Cooperative Office. This study was conducted in Medan City. The sample of this study was all coffee shop MSMEs fostered by the Medan City Cooperative Office with a total sample of 36 coffee shop MSMEs. The collected data will be analyzed qualitatively with Likert scale measurements and SEM-PLS. The results show that the level of modernity of entrepreneurial attitudes has a total average score of 140.8 with a high category and an average percentage of 78.2%. While the performance of coffee shop MSME success has a total average score of 143.9 with a high category and an average percentage of 79.9%. Furthermore, from the results of the SEM-PLS analysis, it can be seen that there is an influence of the modernity of the entrepreneurial attitudes of coffee shop MSME actors on the success of coffee shop MSMEs.

Abstract

Agriculture plays an important role in the economic development of rural communities because most community members in Indonesia depend on the agricultural sector. The agricultural sector until now, still gets the main priority in driving development. With the development of horticulture in vegetable commodities, there is an increase in public concern for health. Tomato production often fluctuates and the main factor that causes a decrease and fluctuation in tomato production is due to high production risk factors, besides that farmers also have financial problems that have an impact on farm income. The purpose of this study was to determine the production and financial risks to tomato farm income in Berastagi District, Karo Regency. The research method combines qualitative and quantitative approaches reinforced by taking questionnaires to farmers using structural equation modelling data analysis with 57 farmers. The results showed that production risk had a moderate effect on tomato farm income and finance had a large effect on tomato farm income.

Abstract

The uniqueness of stingless bee honey makes it an attractive choice as both food and natural medicine for honey consumers, who were previously dominated by honey produced by honeybees (Apis mellifera). This study examines the marketing of stingless bee honey in North Sumatra. The objectives were to determine marketing channels and functions, farmer share, share margin, and the marketing mix. This study uses a cross-sectional survey in five districts/cities in North Sumatra. Respondents were selected using the purposive sampling method (11 stingless bee farmers with at least 50 colonies and at least 5 years of experience), snowball sampling (5 resellers) by recording buying and selling prices. The study results show that three marketing channels are used, with farmers sharing 64.6% on channel 2, yielding an average margin of IDR 106,088/kg. This study found that the longer the distribution chain, the smaller the proportion of income received by farmers (farmer share). Direct channels provide full margins to farmers, whereas the involvement of resellers significantly reduces the farmer's share of the profit. The implications of these findings underscore the importance of developing more efficient and equitable marketing strategies for farmers, including the effective use of digital platforms to expand their markets. However, this study was limited to a specific region and sample. Further studies are recommended to analyze channel efficiency and the impact of digital promotions on increasing sales and farmer welfare.
