Abstract

The football goalkeeper position arguably represents a unique role in team sports. This research aimed to increase the reaction speed of football goalkeepers using a ball launcher. The research method was experimental using a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research was conducted by applying reaction speed training using a ball launcher to measure and found out the results of the data obtained by researchers using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. The research sample consisted of 20 students of the Department of Sports Coaching Education at Universitas Negeri Medan who specialised as football goalkeepers. The instrument used in data collection techniques was the Nelson Foot Reaction. The data analysis technique used was a t-test with a significance level of 0.05. The research results concluded that there was a significant effect of training using a ball launcher on the reaction speed of the goalkeeper. The results can be used as a basis for developing more effective and innovative training methods in the sport of football. In addition, the findings can provide guidance for coaches and researchers in developing relevant and efficient training methods. This study also opens the door for further research to explore the impact of reaction speed in actual match situations, which may yield further insights into the development of quality goalkeeping athletes.

Abstract

Background Problems: Small-sided games (SSGs) have become a significant focus of research in the context of team sports, and a thorough review and analysis of the existing research landscape is needed to identify trends, gaps, and emerging themes. Research Objectives: This study aims to map the research landscape on small-sided games (SSGs) in the context of team sports through a bibliometric approach and a literature review. Methods: Literature was drawn from established research sources in the Scopus and Web of Science databases from 2014 to 2023. The final data used for this study consisted of 1012 articles, which were then analysed using a bibliometric approach, and the literature review was limited to 237 articles after grouping ten types of team sports using the ScientoPy tool. Findings and Results: The results showed a consistent increase in interest in SSGs, with journals such as “Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research” and “Biology of Sport” playing an important role in expanding understanding of the topic. The analysis also revealed that authors such as Clemente F.M. and Praca G.M. had a significant impact on developing knowledge about SSGs. Although football dominated the related literature, the results also highlighted other sports such as basketball, futsal, and handball. However, there is still a lack of SSG research for sports such as cricket and dodgeball. The benefits of SSGs in team sports include improved technical skills, physical fitness, tactical understanding, and physical performance. Conclusion: This study provides insight into the important role of SSGs in athlete development and team sports training and highlights the need for further research to optimise the full potential of this training method.

Abstract

Introduction: Traditional instructor-centered approaches in martial arts education often limit student autonomy and critical thinking development. This study examined the implementation of student-centered pedagogies in Taekwondo instruction within higher education settings. Purpose of the Study: To evaluate the effectiveness of student-centered learning models compared to traditional teaching methods in developing technical proficiency, tactical knowledge, self-efficacy, and autonomous learning behaviors among physical education students enrolled in Taekwondo courses. Materials and Methods: A quasi-experimental pre-post design was employed with 64 physical education students at Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, Indonesia. Participants were divided into experimental (n=32, student-centered pedagogy) and control groups (n=32, traditional instruction). The intervention spanned 14 weeks (28 sessions). Measurements included technical skill assessments, tactical knowledge tests, self-efficacy scales, and autonomous learning questionnaires. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests, independent t-tests, and ANCOVA (p<0.05) via SPSS version 26.0. Results: The student-centered group demonstrated significantly greater improvements in technical proficiency (d=1.24, p<0.001), tactical knowledge (d=1.46, p<0.001), self-efficacy (d=1.38, p<0.001), and autonomous learning behaviors (d=1.52, p<0.001) compared to the control group. Post-intervention between-group comparisons revealed substantial differences favoring the experimental approach across all measured variables. Conclusions: Student-centered pedagogies significantly enhance learning outcomes in Taekwondo education beyond traditional methods. Implementing autonomy-supportive, inquiry-based, and collaborative learning strategies promotes deeper engagement, skill development, and self-regulated learning capacities. These findings advocate for pedagogical reform in martial arts instruction within higher education contexts.

Abstract

Purpose: This systematic literature review aimed to critically examine and synthesize existing empirical evidence on sport pedagogy approaches and their effects on motor skill development and learning motivation in physical education (PE) settings across school-age and early post-secondary populations. Materials and Methods: A systematic search was conducted across ERIC, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, and PubMed databases for peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2024. Studies were eligible if they employed experimental or quasi-experimental designs, reported quantitative or mixed-methods outcomes, and examined at least one identifiable sport pedagogy model. The PRISMA 2020 guidelines directed the selection and reporting process. Quality appraisal used the PEDro scale and Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). A total of 63 studies meeting all inclusion criteria were retained. Results: The evidence strongly supports game-centred approaches (Teaching Games for Understanding, Sport Education Model), constraints-led and ecological dynamics frameworks, cooperative learning, and self-regulated learning strategies as effective means of improving both motor proficiency (effect sizes d = 0.41–0.92) and autonomous motivation (d = 0.48–0.89). Integrated models combining tactical, social, and self-determination theory-aligned elements demonstrated the most consistent outcomes across school levels and sport disciplines. Conclusions: Sport pedagogy models that balance motor skill acquisition with motivational climate creation are superior to traditional direct instruction in producing sustained learning outcomes. Practitioners, curriculum designers, and policy-makers should prioritise evidence-based, student-centred pedagogical models in physical education programming.
