Abstract

Istighfar is an interjection in the Indonesian, borrowed from Arabic and widely used in various social situations, both in personal and public spheres. As a religious interjection that holds a significant position in the linguistic practices of Muslim communities, istighfar reflects both emotional responses and moral awareness toward events perceived as negative or sinful. This study aims identified the characteristics of istighfar as an interjection and to analyze its meaning using the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) approach. Employing a qualitative-descriptive method, the primary data were drawn from fifteen Indonesian novels by prominent authors, while supplementary data were taken from online news headlines and everyday communicative experiences, including spontaneous conversations and selected social media comments within the researcher’s observation. The analysis proceeded in two stages: categorizing istighfar within interjection typology and constructing semantic explications using NSM. The results show that istighfar fulfills nearly all prototypical features of interjections and carries complex spiritual content. Its use not only reflects emotional expression but also constructs and represents the speaker’s religious identity. This research affirms that language can reflect levels of religiosity, as demonstrated by the frequent use of religious interjections in Indonesian society, which is known for its high level of religious devotion.

Abstract

Film as a cultural text never exists independently but is always connected to previous texts that form a network of meanings. The phenomenon of film remakes demonstrates a strong intertextual relationship, as seen in My Annoying Brother in its South Korean and Indonesian versions. This study examines the intertextual relationship between the two films and analyzes the ways the story is reworked within different social and cultural contexts. The purpose of this research is to investigate the intertextual relations between the South Korean version as the source text and the Indonesian version as the transformed text by applying the concepts of opposition, transposition, and transformation. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using an observation method through careful and repeated film viewing, accompanied by note-taking of important dialogues and significant scenes. The research data consist of narrative elements of the films, including plot, characters, conflict, setting, and cultural values. The findings reveal that although both films share similar narrative structures and central conflicts, the Indonesian version incorporates local cultural adaptations that generate new meanings within the context of cross-cultural film remakes.

Abstract

Enforced disappearance during the New Order era represents a historical reality that has left profound wounds and prolonged uncertainty for both the victims and the families left behind. This reality is powerfully represented in Laut Bercerita, a novel by Leila S. Chudori, through the use of symbolic and evocative literary language. This study aims to reveal the representation of enforced disappearance through the use of figures of speech and metaphors in the novel. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a stylistic approach. The data consist of narrative excerpts containing figures of speech and metaphors related to experiences of loss, suffering, memory, and resistance. Data collection was conducted through intensive reading and systematic note-taking, while data analysis involved classifying types of figures of speech and interpreting their contextual meanings. The findings indicate that metaphors of the sea, silence, darkness, and alienation play a crucial role in constructing the representation of enforced disappearance as a traumatic experience that is not only physical but also psychological and collective in nature. The use of figurative language strengthens the narrative’s expressive power in conveying criticism of state violence while simultaneously preserving the memory of humanitarian tragedies that are often marginalized. This study implies that literary works can function as reflective media and as cultural documentation of histories of violence.

Abstract

This study aims to carry out a thorough analysis of the use of stylistic elements, particularly in terms of diction and language style, as applied by Pitoyo Amrih to shape the character of Gatotkaca in the novel Sisi Gelap Gatotkaca. The character of Gatotkaca, traditionally depicted as a flawless heroic figure, is reimagined by the author through a more humanistic and reflective linguistic approach. Using a qualitative descriptive method alongside stylistic literary criticism, this article examines how linguistic units within the text serve as rhetorical tools to reveal internal conflicts, existential burdens, and the darker aspects of the main character. The analysis process involves identifying word choices that carry a melancholic tone as well as the prominent use of figurative language, including comparisons, contrasts, and emphatic statements. The findings indicate that the use of archaic and philosophical diction, combined with sharp irony and metaphor, effectively transforms the image of Gatotkaca from merely a symbol of physical strength into a representation of human psychological fragility. This research contributes to literary criticism by highlighting how an author’s language style can alter readers' perceptions of established myths within society's culture.

Abstract

Abstract This study, entitled “Social Solidarity in Tere Liye’s Novel *Tanah Para Bandit: A Critical Discourse Analysis,”focuses on how language is used by Tere Liye to portray forms of social solidarity and power relations among the characters in the novel. The backgrounds of this research is based on the view that literary works do not merely serve as aesthetic media but also as mirrors of social reality rich in values, ideologies, and power relations. Through language, authors construct representations of social realities that reflect the dynamics between traditional and modern societies. To addres these issues, the study employ a qualitative descriptive approach using Émile Durkheim’s theory of social solidarity, which distinguishes between two types of solidarity mechanical and organic alongside Norman Fairclough’s Crittical Discoursse Analys (CDA) model, which encompasses three main dimensions: text (language), discourse practice (power), and social practice (social context). The findings reveal that language in the novel is strategically employed to construct two forms of social solidarity: mechanical solidarity, reflected in shared values, adherence to traditions, and the role of Abu Syik as a moral authority within society; and organic solidarity, manifested through cooperation, division of roles, and social awareness that arise from character interactions. Through deliberate word choices, distinctive speech styles, and powerful narration, Tere Liye presents a picture of social transformation from a traditional society toward a modern one that values collaboration, knowledge, and collective spirit. The novelty of this study lies in the applications of Durkheim’s social solidarity theory within the framework of Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, aiming to uncover the relationship between language, power, and social reality in modern Indonesian literature. The research gap addressed is the scarcity of studies analyzing forms of social solidarity in Tanah Para Bandit with a focus on deological and power dimensions expressed through language .Keywords: Social Solidarity; Critical Discourse Analysis; Émile Durkheim; Norman Fairclough; Tanah Para Bandit

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the character education discourse reflected through the main character, Enong, in the novel Padang Bulan by Andrea Hirata using F.W. Foerster's character education theory. The methodological approach employed is discourse analysis with descriptive qualitative methods. The research data consist of narrative excerpts and dialogues reflecting the character values of Enong, which are then classified based on Foerster's four main principles: orderliness (discipline), adherence to values (obedience to values), loyalty, and integrity of life (unity of life). The research findings indicate that the character education discourse in this novel is manifested through two main aspects: learning motivation and hard work. Learning motivation is reflected in Enong's enthusiasm for continuously pursuing knowledge, diligence in self-directed learning, and loyalty to her aspirations despite living in economic and social limitations. Meanwhile, the value of hard work is evident in Enong's persistence in bearing the family's economic burden, courage in taking on the role of a tin prospector, and resilience in facing failure without giving up. All four of Foerster's principles are consistently present in Enong's actions and words, demonstrating the integration of moral, intellectual, and social values. This study concludes that Andrea Hirata successfully constructs a humanistic character education discourse through the figure of Enong as a representation of a resilient, independent, and educated woman. These findings are relevant for use as literary teaching materials in character education learning in schools because they contain universal values such as discipline, responsibility, determination, and loyalty to one's aspirations.
