Abstract

Abstract

The myth of Princess Mandalika is a significant folktale within the culture of the Sasak people in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. This myth illustrates the sacrifice of a princess for the sake of social harmony within her community, and it reflects profound cultural values. This study employs Claude Lévi-Strauss's structuralist approach to analyse the narrative structure and symbolic meanings within the myth of Princess  Mandalika. Through this analysis, the research aims to understand how the various elements of the myth interact to form a more complex meaning and reflect the duality of values in Sasak culture. The primary focuses of this research are: 1) to analyse the narrative structure of the myth of Princess  Mandalika, 2) to identify the symbolic meanings of the elements within the myth, and 3) to comprehend how this myth reflects the social values and cultural identity of the Sasak community. The analysis reveals that the myth embodies values of collectivism, sacrifice, and the relationship between humans and nature. The sea, as a symbol within the myth, represents uncertainty and the power of nature that must be respected. Furthermore, the sacrifice of Princess Mandalika illustrates a moral principle that emphasises the interests of the community over those of the individual. This study reveals that the myth of Princess Mandalika serves not only as a cultural narrative but also as a mirror of the social values that continue to shape the identity of the Sasak people to this day.

Abstract

This study synthesises interdisciplinary perspectives to examine how Indonesian performing arts function as dynamic cultural–educational ecosystems shaped by aesthetic expression, local wisdom, and creative pedagogical practices. Performing arts serve not only as artistic media but also as cultural spaces where identity, morality, symbolism, and social values are transmitted across generations. Local wisdom embedded in traditional arts strengthens their role in character formation and contextual learning, while contemporary forces such as modernisation, digitalisation, and global cultural flows increasingly influence how these traditions adapt and transform. Using a qualitative thematic-synthesis approach, the study reviews concepts from aesthetics, ethnography, cultural pedagogy, creative studies, and ethnomathematics to map the interconnected functions of performing arts. Four major thematic patterns emerge: aesthetic systems that evolve through symbolic structures and hybrid forms; the presence of moral, spiritual, and communal values; creative processes that mediate innovation while maintaining cultural continuity; and pedagogical potentials that support character development, cultural literacy, and creative reasoning. Overall, the study highlights Indonesian performing arts as an integrated ecosystem that bridges cultural transmission, creativity, and educational transformation. This synthesis provides a conceptual foundation for advancing future research and informing cultural and educational policy aimed at strengthening the sustainability and relevance of traditional performing-arts practices in contemporary contexts.

Abstract

This study examines how tradition is adapted through creativity and innovation in the Sasak community’s Kecimol performance, with a focus on the Merpati Nusantara ensemble in Mataram. The research aims to identify how Kecimol, originally a traditional ensemble rooted in Cilokaq, has evolved into a performance that integrates modern instruments, cross-genre repertoires, portable stage designs, and the use of digital media. Using an ethnographic approach involving participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, the study highlights how the creativity of the artists and the active participation of the community as both audience and co-creators drive collective innovation. This innovation successfully preserves local identity while engaging with global trends. The adaptation demonstrates cultural resilience, sustaining the vitality of tradition amid modernization, despite intergenerational value tensions and negative stigmas. From a socio-economic perspective, Kecimol functions as an alternative income source, a social interaction platform, and a form of public entertainment. This research contributes theoretically by enriching studies on creativity and cultural adaptation, while providing practical insights for cultural preservation strategies, creative economy development, and community-based tourism. Overall, Kecimol exemplifies the Sasak community’s identity and the sustainability of traditional arts within the context of globalization.

Abstract

Aesthetic literacy constitutes a critical yet often underemphasized dimension of primary education, frequently overshadowed by the prioritization of academic cognitive competencies. In fact, aesthetic experiences—particularly through engagement with and appreciation of the arts—play a significant role in cultivating children’s sensitivity, creativity, and reflective capacities from an early age. This article aims to provide a comprehensive examination of the role of art appreciation in the development of aesthetic literacy in primary schools, as well as its implications for pedagogical practices. This study adopts a systematic literature review approach, drawing on a range of relevant scholarly sources in the fields of art education, child development, and aesthetic literacy. The analytical process employs thematic synthesis to identify recurring patterns and conceptual relationships emerging across the literature. The findings indicate that art appreciation contributes simultaneously to children’s cognitive, affective, social, and creative development. Furthermore, aesthetic literacy enriches learning experiences and supports the formation of cultural sensitivity and identity. Its effective implementation in primary education requires the integration of arts-based curricula, the application of multimodal pedagogical approaches, and the active involvement of teachers alongside a supportive learning environment. Therefore, aesthetic literacy should be positioned as an integral component of primary education to foster more holistic, human-centered, and meaningful learning processes.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the challenges of internalizing Pancasila values among sociology education students through an approach relevant to the local cultural context. One potential medium is the values of Presean culture, which can enrich the teaching of Pancasila ideology. The purpose of this study is to analyse the role of Presean cultural values in social learning and their contribution to strengthening students’ understanding of Pancasila. The study employed a qualitative approach with 15 participants consisting of sociology education students, lecturers, and local cultural figures. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis, then examined using a descriptive-interpretative method. The findings reveal that the internalisation of Presean values-such as courage, sportsmanship, and adherence to rules-positively enhances students’ comprehension of Pancasila principles. In addition, this culturally based learning increases students’ awareness of unity, social justice, and respect for human rights. These results suggest that integrating Presean cultural values into social education can serve as an effective alternative for strengthening Pancasila ideology among the younger generation.

Abstract

This study examines the role of the Cultural Park in strengthening performance arts-based cultural tourism in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) to support sustainable tourism. Although NTB possesses rich natural and cultural resources, the integration of performing arts into tourism development has not yet been optimized. Therefore, this research focuses on two main issues: (1) the extent to which the Cultural Park maximizes its potential as a driver of performance arts-based cultural tourism in NTB; and (2) its role in supporting sustainable tourism development. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method involving stages of data collection, analysis, and reporting. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and document studies, and were analyzed inductively. The analysis applies the 6A tourism development model (Attraction, Accessibility, Amenities, Accommodation, Activities, Ancillary Services). The research also aligns with Asta Cita of the President, point 3 in the RPJMN 2025–2029, with a target achievement of Technology Readiness Level 3 (TRL 3) and SDGs indicator point 8. The findings reveal that NTB Cultural Park has strengths in the diversity of traditional and contemporary arts, the availability of performance facilities, and its function as a center for cultural interaction. However, limitations in curation, digital promotion, cultural calendars, and cross-sector integration remain challenges. Socially, the Cultural Park contributes to preserving cultural identity and empowering art communities; economically, it fosters the creative economy and job opportunities; and ecologically, it strengthens local wisdom in line with sustainability principles.
