Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the Perang Topat ritual as a cultural-historical practice representing interreligious harmony in West Lombok, a region where Sasak and Balinese communities have long interacted, forming a distinctive socio-religious configuration. Held in Lingsar, the ritual functions not only as a religious tradition but also as a cultural mechanism for managing differences in identity, social tensions, and shared interests related to vital water resources. The study focuses on the historical context, ritual structure, symbolic meanings, and social functions of Perang Topat in sustaining intercommunal harmony. Employing a qualitative approach grounded in ethnography and cultural history, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The findings reveal that the ritual serves as a space for symbolic communication, social integration, and conflict management between Hindu and Wetu Telu Islam communities. Perang Topat demonstrates that harmony is a product of socio-historical negotiation and remains relevant as a living cultural heritage for strengthening social cohesion in Indonesia’s multicultural society.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to strengthen students’ academic publication capacity through scientific article writing training conducted in Lombok Barat. The training involved 10 students with diverse academic backgrounds and varying levels of writing experience, most of whom had limited exposure to scientific writing. The method applied was a participatory and practice-based approach, integrating conceptual explanation with direct writing exercises. The activity was conducted in one day through several stages, including needs identification, material delivery, guided writing practice, evaluation, and reflection. The results indicate a significant improvement in participants’ competencies, particularly in understanding the structure of scientific articles, developing academic arguments, and using formal academic language. All participants were able to produce initial drafts of scientific articles, which reflects an increase in both technical skills and academic confidence. Additionally, the training contributed to a shift in participants’ perceptions of scientific writing, from a complex task to a manageable and learnable process. This finding suggests that short-term, practice-oriented training can effectively enhance students’ academic literacy and support the development of sustainable academic writing skills.

Abstract

The internalisation of Pancasila values among sociology education students often lacks contextual relevance to local culture. One potential approach is through the values of Presean culture, which can enhance the teaching of Pancasila ideology. The aim of this study is to analyse the role of internalising Presean cultural values in social learning and its impact on strengthening Pancasila ideology among sociology education students. The research methodology employed is a qualitative approach, utilising data collection techniques such as interviews, observations, and document studies. Analysis is conducted using a descriptive-interpretative approach to explore the meanings and impacts of Presean culture within the context of Pancasila education. The findings indicate that the internalisation of Presean cultural values, such as courage, sportsmanship, and adherence to rules, significantly contributes to enhancing students' understanding of the principles of Pancasila. Furthermore, this culturally-based learning has successfully raised students’ awareness of the importance of unity, social justice, and respect for human rights. Therefore, the integration of Presean cultural values into social education can serve as an effective alternative for strengthening Pancasila ideology among the younger generation.

Abstract

This research explores the traditional Tambur art of the Sasak community as a cultural artifact possessing historical, organological, and social significance. The Tambur is not merely regarded as an instrument; it also serves as a symbol of identity and a space for contesting narratives between claims of Balinese heritage and the local Sasak roots. The study indicates that the Tambur has undergone a process of localisation, rendering it an inseparable part of the cultural practices of the Wetu Telu Islamic community, particularly within the context of the Perang Topat ritual. From an organological perspective, the Tambur instrument and its ensemble demonstrate the technological skills of the community in transforming natural materials such as wood, metal, skin, and bamboo into musically meaningful and functional instruments. Its rhythmic and collaborative instrumental structure reflects values of mutual cooperation, spirituality, and a connection to the environment. In a social context, the Tambur serves as a binding medium for the community and a link between generations. It functions as a cultural communication tool that preserves the continuity of tradition amidst the challenges of changing times. Therefore, the preservation of the Tambur should be understood as an effort to maintain the identity and vitality of local culture, which is increasingly threatened by global homogenisation.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Amaq abir traditional theatre in communicating ethical values associated with the principles of Pancasila within the Sasak community of West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Preserved by Sanggar Pustaka Budaya in Central Lombok, Amaq abir represents an important form of local cultural heritage that conveys social and moral meanings beyond its artistic function. In the context of globalization, the growing influence of global culture has raised concerns regarding cultural continuity, identity formation, and shifts in moral values. This research employs a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach to explore how Pancasila-related values are articulated through traditional performance practices. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with performers and community members, and documentation of rehearsals and performances. The findings indicate that Amaq abir performances communicate ethical values associated with the five principles of Pancasila through narrative dialogues, symbolic masks, traditional musical accompaniment, and collective participation. Values related to religiosity, humanity, unity, deliberation, and social responsibility are expressed both within the storyline and through the social interactions surrounding the performance. These findings suggest that traditional performing arts may function as culturally embedded spaces for character education and moral reflection within community life.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of Pancasila values in the traditional theater performance of Amaq Abir, a cultural heritage preserved by Sanggar Pustaka Budaya in Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. The urgency of this research arises from the impact of globalization, which often generates cultural dislocation, identity crises, and moral shifts. These conditions emphasize the importance of developing character education models grounded in local wisdom while reinforcing Pancasila as the nation’s ideological foundation. Using a qualitative design with an ethnographic approach, data were obtained through systematic observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings show that Amaq Abir performances embody the five principles of Pancasila through dialogic narratives, symbolic costumes, traditional music, and social interaction. Values of religiosity, humanity, unity, deliberation, and social justice are not only represented artistically but also lived communally by performers and audiences. The study positions Amaq Abir as more than folk entertainment; it serves as a medium for contextualized character education and ideological transmission. Its novelty lies in mapping how Pancasila values are integrated into traditional performance arts, framing them as cultural strategies and pedagogical tools. Broader implications highlight the revitalization of traditional arts, the strengthening of cultural identity, and the collaboration of local governments, educational institutions, and art communities to embed these practices into national character education agendas.

Abstract

The Stand-Up Comedy Lombok community demonstrates substantial potential in advancing creative tourism development in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Indonesia. While studies on cultural tourism have primarily emphasized traditional arts and heritage-based performances, limited scholarly attention has been given to contemporary creative expressions such as stand-up comedy. This study aims to examine how the Lombok stand-up comedy community contributes to tourism by transforming humor into a medium for cultural communication and destination branding. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach through observations, interviews, and performance analysis, the research highlights how comedians creatively integrate traditional narratives, local wisdom, social issues, and unique cultural practices of Lombok into their material. The findings reveal that performances not only entertain but also serve as an educational platform that facilitates cultural transmission, encourages cross-cultural understanding, and strengthens audience engagement. Furthermore, their shows often attract diverse audiences, enhance the visibility of Lombok’s cultural identity, and foster authentic and memorable tourism experiences. The study contributes to the discourse on creative tourism by positioning stand-up comedy as a modern performing art capable of bridging cultural heritage and contemporary entertainment. The implications suggest that policymakers and tourism stakeholders should recognize and support such creative communities as strategic partners in sustainable tourism development in NTB.

Abstract

This study investigates the communicative functions of pentatonic music in the Gula Gending street vending practice in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, positioning it as a culturally embedded soundmark within everyday economic activity. While previous soundscape scholarship has largely foregrounded environmental listening, relatively little attention has been paid to the ways in which structured musical systems function as active communicative agents in informal economic contexts. Adopting an ethnomusicological ethnographic approach, this research integrates participant observation, in-depth interviews, and audio-visual documentation to examine the intersections between musical structure, performance practice, and socio-cultural context. The findings demonstrate that Gula Gending music operates as a multi-layered communicative system: it serves as an auditory marker of identity, a mechanism for attracting attention, a medium for transmitting cultural memory, and a facilitator of social interaction between vendors and consumers. The deployment of pentatonic structures enhances perceptual accessibility, enabling rapid recognition and response within fluid and dynamic street environments. Beyond its functional dimension, the music embodies symbolic meanings that link individual experience to broader collective cultural identities. This study contributes to ethnomusicology and sound studies by reconceptualizing the notion of soundmark as an active semiotic and economic practice rather than a passive acoustic phenomenon. Furthermore, it highlights the capacity of traditional musical forms to operate as adaptive communicative strategies within contemporary informal economies, offering critical implications for cultural sustainability and policy formulation.
