Abstract

Background: Complementary feeding is crucial for children's growth and development, especially between the ages of 6 to 24 months. Adequate nutritional intake during this period can prevent long-term health issues, such as stunting and obesity. However, many mothers struggle with providing appropriate complementary feeding due to a lack of knowledge and inappropriate feeding practices. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the Emotional Demonstration (Emo Demo) method in improving maternal knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to complementary feeding. Methods: Using a pretest-posttest control group design, 100 mothers with children aged 6 to 24 months were assigned to one of three groups: control (lecture), demonstration, and Emo Demo. Data were collected via questionnaires and observational assessments at multiple intervals to measure the sustainability of behavior changes. Statistical analyses, including ANOVA and Least Significant Difference (LSD) tests, revealed that the Emo Demo method significantly enhanced knowledge, attitudes, and feeding practices compared to traditional methods. Results: The study found no significant demographic differences between groups. ANOVA showed significant improvements in knowledge, attitudes, and behavior (p-value<0.05). LSD analysis revealed significant changes in the Emo Demo group (p-value=0.010 for knowledge and behavior, p-value=0.028 for attitude), indicating its effectiveness in improving complementary feeding practices. Conclusions: Innovative and emotionally engaging methods like Emo Demo can effectively address the challenges of complementary feeding, ultimately contributing to public health efforts to reduce stunting in Indonesia. Further research is recommended to refine educational strategies for improving maternal nutrition practices in diverse communities.

Abstract

The prevalence of anemia in Indonesian adolescent girls reaches 15.5%. Blood supplement tablets are still not accepted by young women. This study was conducted to evaluate the acceptability and iron content of Keloreal. An experimental method was applied, utilizing a hedonic scale to assess attributes of taste, aroma, color, and texture, and the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) method to determine iron content in the best formula. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by the Mann-Whitney test. The MS0 formulation received the highest overall hedonic scores. However, among the two treatment formulations, MS2 was more acceptable to the panelists due to its milder bitterness and less prominent moringa flavor, leading to better acceptance compared to MS1.  Iron levels measured using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) method were 0.0596 mg/g for the MS2 formulation and 0.0756 mg/g for the control (MS0). Despite the lower iron concentration, MS2 is considered a potential alternative snack due to its elevated levels of complementary micronutrients that play a synergistic role in supporting iron metabolism and erythropoiesis.

Abstract

Anemia is a health problem that can occur in all age groups ranging from toddlers to the elderly. Adolescent girls are prone to anemia due to the monthly menstrual cycle. Anemia in adolescents is defined as a state of hemoglobin (Hb) levels in the blood less and normal numbers according to sex and age groups. The incidence of anemia in East Java in 2021 showed a percentage of 57.1%. Meanwhile, the incidence of anemia in Sidoarjo district is 46.7%. In setting a diet with balanced nutrition in adolescent girls, iron intake is so important, so snack innovations with high iron content are needed. Objectives: To determine the acceptability of rainbow meatballs as an alternative iron-rich snack to prevent anemia in adolescent girlsMethods: This research design is a Pre Experiment research design with organoleptic tests on 30 adolescents aged 10-19 years as panelists with random sampling technique. The population was taken from a class of 42 students of the Diploma in Nutrition Program who had been trained. The sample was determined based on the slovin formula and 30 panelists were obtained with an alpha of 0.01. The data that has been collected will then be processed, tabulated, and interpreted, and analyzed. the data analysis technique used is the Kruskal Wallis statistical test and continued with Mann Whitney. Results: The most preferred formula and has the highest iron content is formula 3 with an average value of 4.01 and iron content of 0.41 mg each 100 g of product. The results of statistical tests using Kruskal Wallis showed significant differences in taste and appearance indicators, which then after further testing using Mann Whitney found significant differences between the 3 rainbow meatball formulas on taste and appearance indicators. Conclusions: The most preferred rainbow meatball formulation by panelists is formula 3 with an average score of 4.01. In the Kruskal Wallis statistical test, differences were found in the taste and appearance indicators. After further testing using Mann Whitney on the taste indicator, there was a significant difference between three formulation of rainbow meatballs. The formulation with the highest iron content is formula 3 with the addition of carrot extract.
