Abstract

Nurse managers play an essential role in coordinating emergency department functions, especially during global health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including Indonesia, their experiences have not been widely explored, despite facing unique logistical, emotional, and cultural challenges. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of nurse managers in overseeing COVID-19 screening procedures in the emergency department of RSUP H. Adam Malik Hospital in Medan, Indonesia. A descriptive phenomenological approach was employed to capture the essence of their experiences. Ten nurse managers were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews lasting 30 to 60 minutes, supplemented by field notes and document analysis. Colaizzi’s seven-step method guided the analysis, with credibility ensured via member checking and triangulation using multiple informants. The study identified five major themes: (1) psychological distress in the early phase of the pandemic, stemming from fear, uncertainty, and concern for family safety; (2) challenges in implementing screening, including patient resistance, resource limitations, and PPE shortages; (3) proactive efforts for early COVID-19 detection through triage protocols and symptom-checking tools; (4) improvements in screening management, emphasizing leadership, education, and compliance; and (5) adaptation and resilience, as nurse managers developed strategies to cope with evolving demands and pressures. These themes reveal both universal healthcare struggles and context-specific issues—such as anxiety about infecting multigenerational households—that shaped nurse managers’ responses. This research contributes to the limited body of qualitative evidence on pandemic leadership in LMICs. The insights gained underscore the importance of robust emergency preparedness, targeted psychological support for healthcare leaders, and ongoing improvements in screening protocols. Strengthening these areas can better equip healthcare systems to face future public health emergencies. Keywords: Nurse Managers, COVID-19, Emergency Department, Screening, Indonesia, LMICs.

Abstract

Individuals and groups, including the general public, are currently required to be able to provide immediate assistance when facing emergency conditions. To ensure assistance is provided according to proper procedures, it is necessary to offer training on Basic Life Support (BLS). Students of SMK Kesehatan Haji Sumatera Utara, who are teenagers with significant potential, are ideal candidates for such training. Although they are organized into a KKR Cadre Team or Youth Health Cadre group, they currently lack the necessary knowledge and need to be equipped with BLS skills. The purpose of this service is to enhance the knowledge and technological capabilities of students at SMK Kesehatan Haji Sumatera Utara regarding Basic Life Support in emergency cases. The method used includes interactive lectures, questions and answers, pre-tests, interventions, and post-tests. The results of the counseling and training showed a marked improvement in knowledge about Basic Life Support and an increase in the skills required to administer BLS. It is essential to carry out continuous counseling and socialization efforts within the school, particularly in the area of Basic Life Support

Abstract

Abstract

This community service program aimed to improve the capacity of primary health care providers in utilizing JKN capitation funds to support food security efforts in Sabang City. The activity was initiated in response to the limited use of capitation funds for promotive and preventive services, particularly in nutrition and food-related programs. Using a participatory action research (PAR) approach, the intervention involved two primary health centers (Puskesmas) through a series of mentoring sessions, workshops, focus group discussions, and joint action planning. Key outputs included improved understanding of JKN policy frameworks, development of nutrition-oriented budget plans, and the initiation of community food initiatives. Pre- and post-assessments showed a significant increase in participants’ knowledge scores, with an average improvement of 20.5 points. The program also triggered behavioral changes such as collaborative budgeting, active community involvement, and the emergence of local leaders in health and nutrition. These findings highlight the strategic role of JKN capitation funds in promoting community-based food security through primary health services. The intervention model has the potential to be scaled and adapted in other regions with similar contexts to strengthen intersectoral health governance and local resilience in food and nutrition systems

Abstract

This community service activity aims to strengthen civil society organizations (CSOs) in the efforts to eliminate AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria (ATM), as well as to enhance disaster resilience in Serdang Bedagai Regency. Through a participatory approach, the program involves local communities in outreach, training, and the development of CSO networks focused on health issues and disaster mitigation. The activities began with an analysis of the community health situation and needs assessment, followed by education on the prevention of infectious diseases and disaster risk management. The results of the program implementation indicate an increase in community awareness regarding the importance of health and disaster preparedness, as well as the establishment of stronger collaboration among various community elements. By empowering CSOs, it is expected that a healthier and more resilient environment will be created, thereby reducing the impact of infectious diseases and natural disasters. This program not only provides direct benefits to the community but also builds sustainable local capacity to face future health and disaster challenges.
