Abstract

Background: Problem solving is an essential skill in mathematics learning. Students’ ability to solve problems varies according to their level of mathematical ability, which needs to be profiled to improve the effectiveness of the learning process. Aims: This study aims to describe the problem-solving profile of students on arithmetic sequences and series material based on their level of mathematical ability at SMA Negeri 1 Banawa Tengah. Methods: This research used a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study design. The subjects consisted of three students selected using purposive sampling, representing one student each from the high, medium, and low mathematical ability categories, determined based on mathematics report card scores processed according to Arikunto’s (2013) criteria. Data were collected through written tasks and student interviews, and analysed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014) model comprising data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Results: The problem-solving profile of students with high mathematical ability (NF) and students with medium mathematical ability (AW) in solving problems fulfilled all four problem-solving indicators based on Polya’s stages: understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and looking back. The problem-solving profile of students with low mathematical ability (FD) only fulfilled three of the four indicators, consisting of understanding the problem, devising a plan, and carrying out the plan. Conclusion: Students with high and medium mathematical ability fulfilled all four of Polya’s problem-solving stages, while students with low ability could only fulfil three stages, being unable to review their answers at the looking back stage.

Abstract

This study aims to obtain a description of the problem-solving process of students at SMA Negeri 1 Ogodeide in solving word problems on arithmetic sequences and series. Problem-solving needs to be analyzed so that teachers can understand students' problem-solving abilities. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. Data were obtained from written tasks and student interviews. The results show that the problem-solving analysis of students with rational (MS) and artisan (SM) personality types fulfilled all problem-solving indicators, namely understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and looking back. The problem-solving analysis of the student with a guardian personality type (AH) only fulfilled two indicators, namely understanding the problem and devising a plan. The problem-solving analysis of the student with an idealist personality type (SS) only fulfilled three indicators, namely understanding the problem, devising a plan, and carrying out the plan.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the RME (Realistic Mathematics Education) approach on the learning outcomes of eighth-grade students in statistics. This is a quantitative study using a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group. The population of this study consists of eighth-grade students at SMP Labschool UNTAD Palu, comprising four classes with a total of 100 students. A sample of 50 students was selected using random sampling. The data collection methods used were learning outcomes from essay-based tests and observations. The data analysis techniques used were the independent samples t-test and the N-Gain test. The results of the independent samples t-test showed a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.001, indicating a significant difference in learning outcomes between the experimental and control classes. The N-Gain Score calculation for the experimental class yielded a value of 0.66, which falls into the moderate category. Therefore, it can be concluded that the RME approach is effective in improving the learning outcomes of eighth-grade students in statistics. The effectiveness of the RME approach is supported by learning stages that link mathematical concepts to real-life situations, enabling students to build understanding and deepen their grasp of statistical concepts, thereby improving their learning outcomes. Keywords: Effectiveness, RME, Learning Outcomes
