Abstract

The historic house of Saoraja Lapinceng was created in 1879 by Andi Muhammad Saleh Daeng Parani Arung Balusu, often known as King Balusu. When Saoraja Lapinceng was established, the building collapsed, shattering glassware such as plates and other kitchenware (in the Bugis language, pinceng means glass). Thus, it was given the name Soraja Lapinceng. The components of a traditional Soraja Lapinceng home are separated into three sections: rakkeang, ale bole, and awa bola. This research seeks to elucidate the relationship between Islam and the Barru community in the architecture of the traditional Saoraja Lapinceng house. Qualitative information derived from field and library studies. The researchers employed historical, archeological, social anthropological, and architectural methods to address these issues. Observation, in-depth interviews with homeowners, community leaders, and the community surrounding the traditional house, as well as the collection of papers and audio recordings, were the data gathering techniques utilized in this study. The results of the study indicate that the concept of Islam in the architecture of the traditional Saoraja Lapinceng house is reflected in the orientation of family furniture, particularly the bed, towards the Qibla. The bedrooms for children and parents are divided, and the bedrooms for boys and girls are also segregated. The water barrel is positioned adjacent to the site's entrance stairs so that those who wish to enter the residence can do so with clean feet. According to Islamic teachings, the home must be clean, and the water barrel is used to collect water for ablution. In accordance with Islamic principles, the toilet cannot face the Qibla. This conforms to the notion of including toilets in the spatial layout of a typical Saorja Lapinceng home. The goal of this study is for individuals to apply the ideals and values of Saoraja Lapinceng traditional house building to the contemporary period.

Abstract

This article examines the comparison of scientific culture between the Abbasid Dynasty and the Fatimid Dynasty, two great caliphates that significantly influenced the development of Islamic science. The Abbasid Dynasty was known for establishing Baitul Hikmah, which became an intellectual centre for advancements in astronomy, mathematics, medicine, and philosophy. Conversely, the Fatimid Dynasty, through the establishment of Al-Azhar, contributed to the field of education, particularly in Ismaili theology and religious philosophy. This study aims to compare the two dynasties regarding their roles in the development of science, focusing on their approaches to both natural and spiritual sciences. The comparative analysis found that although both dynasties made significant contributions to the scientific realm, they differed in their scientific orientation, influenced by their respective political and theological contexts. This research provides insight into the intellectual legacy of both dynasties and their impact on Islamic civilisation.

Abstract

Limited public understanding of the rise and decline of the three major Islamic empires—the Ottoman Empire, the Safavid Empire, and the Mughal Empire—has resulted in the educational, leadership, and civilizational values embedded in their histories not being optimally utilized as learning resources. This Community Partnership Program (PKM) aimed to enhance participants' literacy on Islamic civilization and strengthen their understanding of the factors contributing to the rise and decline of these three empires as valuable lessons for contemporary Islamic education and society. The program was implemented through educational sessions, interactive lectures, group discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and participant evaluations. The target participants included community members, teachers, and students interested in the study of Islamic history. The results of the program demonstrated an improvement in participants' understanding of the historical development of the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal Empires, the factors influencing their growth and decline, and the relevance of these historical experiences to strengthening leadership values, character development, the advancement of knowledge, and lifelong learning. Participants also showed high enthusiasm throughout the activities and were able to relate historical lessons to the contemporary challenges of Islamic education. This Community Partnership Program contributed to improving Islamic historical literacy and encouraged the use of Islamic civilization history as a medium for character building and strengthening Islamic insight through contextual and value-based learning.

Abstract

This article explores the transformation of Islamic education in South Sulawesi from the traditional langgar system to the more structured form of madrasah during the period 1900– 1942. The study aims to identify the social, political, and religious dynamics that underpinned the shift in Islamic education amidst Dutch colonial pressures and Christian missionary expansion. Utilizing a historical approach and descriptive-analytical method, this article provides a historical account of the emergence of madrasahs as both an adaptive response to modern challenges and a form of resistance to the hegemony of colonial education. The findings reveal that madrasahs were not merely a continuation of traditional langgar, but also institutional innovations that integrated elements of modernity, such as graded systems, structured curricula, and academic evaluations, while maintaining the core values of Islamic teachings. Madrasahs became ideological and cultural arenas of contestation between Islamic and secular colonial educational systems. Local scholars such as Anregurutta Sulaiman and H. Muhammad As’ad played crucial roles in establishing and developing madrasahs in regions like Sengkang, Bone, and Luwu. This article concludes that the transformation of Islamic educational institutions reflects the Muslim community’s endeavor to preserve religious identity and create a competitive educational foundation within the colonial structure.

Abstract

This study explores the concept of educational leadership within the philosophical and political thought of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. As the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Khomeini viewed education not merely as an instrument for intellectual instruction, but as a vital mechanism for moral purification, political awakening, and societal transformation. Utilizing a qualitative research design with a historical-philosophical and content analysis approach, this paper examines primary speeches, writings, and decrees by Khomeini concerning educational theory and governance. The findings indicate that educational leadership in Khomeini’s thought is intrinsically tied to spiritual guidance (tarbiyah) and the concept of Velayat-e Faqih (Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist). The ideal educational leader functions as a moral exemplar (murrabbi) aimed at liberating society from cultural imperialism, fostering self-reliance, and aligning educational institutions with Islamic ethics and social justice. Ultimately, Khomeini’s model redefines educational leadership as a dual responsibility of political resistance and spiritual elevation, positioning the educator as a catalyst for holistic ideological reformation.

Abstract

This study examines the educational philosophy of 19th-century Islamic modernist reformers Jamal al-Din al-Afghani and Muhammad Abduh, analyzing its enduring relevance to contemporary educational challenges. Modern educational systems—particularly within Muslim-majority societies—frequently grapple with epistemological dualism, pedagogical dogmatism, and a structural gap between traditional moral formation and rapid scientific-technological advancement. Utilizing a qualitative philosophical inquiry and historical-hermeneutic content analysis, this paper systematically evaluates Afghani's anti-colonial, socio-political educational awakening alongside Abduh's institutional and curricular reform paradigms at Al-Azhar. The findings reveal that both thinkers formulated a revolutionary synthesis that rejected taqlid (uncritical imitation), advocated for the revival of ijtihad (independent reasoning), and championed the integration of modern empirical sciences with dynamic Islamic ethics. The study demonstrates that al-Afghani's emphasis on critical political consciousness and Abduh's structural integration of sacred and secular knowledge offer vital theoretical models for resolving contemporary epistemological bifurcation, combating instructional passivity, and cultivating ethically grounded, critically minded citizens capable of navigating globalized knowledge economies.

Abstract

This study examines the relevance and conceptual convergence of modern Indian educational thought with contemporary Islamic educational paradigms. Both educational traditions face shared modern challenges, including hyper-standardization, secular-religious dualism, market-driven utilitarianism, and the erosion of ethical-spiritual values. Utilizing a qualitative philosophical inquiry and comparative textual analysis, this paper systematically analyzes the core educational ideas of prominent modern Indian thinkers—such as Rabindranath Tagore, Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda, and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad—alongside classical and contemporary Islamic educational principles. The findings reveal significant philosophical alignment between modern Indian humanism and the Islamic holistic vision of education (Tarbiyah, Ta'dib, and Ta'lim). Both frameworks emphasize integral human development, environmental stewardship, experiential learning (Nai Talim), and the synthesis of spiritual wisdom with empirical knowledge. The study demonstrates that integrating these cross-cultural philosophical insights provides valuable theoretical and practical models for reforming contemporary Islamic education—moving it beyond mechanical instruction toward holistic human flourishing, critical civic engagement, and ecological responsibility in a pluralistic world.

Abstract
