Abstract

Malnutrition among adolescents is a crucial public health problem and tends to cause serious problems in the next generation, one of which is commonly called stunting. Adolescents As agents of change and prospective parents, adolescents play an important role in stunting prevention. The involvement of adolescents can be one of the important factors in breaking the stunting cycle. This study aims to exxplore deeper into the role of adolescents in stunting prevention efforts. Qualitative research with a phenomenological approach is used in this study. The selection of informants uses purposive sampling. There were 8 adolescent girls as the main informants and one health center nutrition officer as a supporting informant. Data obtaining uses in-depth interviews with an average interview duration of 30-40 minutes. Data analysis uses thematic analysis. There are two themes with four sub-themes, namely the role of adolescents in stunting prevention efforts (three sub-themes: clean and healthy living behavior; adolescent compliance with consuming blood-boosting tablets; adolescent involvement in health activities) and obstacles in stunting prevention efforts (one sub-theme: lack of adolescent knowledge about stunting).Lack of knowledge about stunting among the adolescents in Adow Health Center causes adolescents reluctant to play an active role in preventing stunting issues. An interesting finding is that although adolescents lack knowledge about stunting, they are not interested in seeking information about stunting. Therefore, the development of digital educational content about stunting, especially through social media platforms, is expected to attract the interest of adolescents to increase their knowledge and role in stunting prevention. Further research needs to be carried out, especially on how adolescents use social media to share information and build awareness about stunting issues among their peers.

Abstract

Breast milk is the primary source of nutrition for infants. However, not all babies receive exclusive breastfeeding. Among adolescent mothers, barriers and challenges in breastfeeding play a significant role in achieving breastfeeding success. This is closely related to the mother's knowledge in overcoming these challenges. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of adolescent mothers about exclusive breastfeeding. The study employed an analytical observational method with a cross-sectional study design. A total of 96 adolescent mothers participated in the study, selected using accidental sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire, and the data were analyzed using the chi-square test. The results showed that the majority of mothers provided exclusive breastfeeding to their babies (55.2%) and had a high level of knowledge (73.6%). There was a significant relationship between mothers' knowledge and exclusive breastfeeding (p = 0.001 < 0.05), with the odds ratio indicating a 0.235 times lower likelihood of not providing exclusive breastfeeding among mothers with higher knowledge. High knowledge among adolescent mothers about exclusive breastfeeding positively influenced the provision of exclusive breastfeeding to their infants. Health education and breastfeeding counseling are essential for adolescent mothers to support and encourage them to continue breastfeeding their babies until the age of 6 months without cessation.

Abstract

Abstract

Perinatal mental health issues, particularly postpartum anxiety, are a global concern with significant impacts on maternal well-being and child development. Heart Rate Variability (HRV), reflecting autonomic nervous system balance, is a useful indicator of stress and anxiety. Breastfeeding is known to enhance HRV and reduce anxiety via oxytocin release. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of breastfeeding using an oxytocin carrier in reducing anxiety among breastfeeding mothers, measured through HRV. A quasi-experimental, cross-sectional design was used, involving 120 breastfeeding mothers purposively sampled from communities in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The intervention involved applying an oxytocin carrier for 15–20 minutes, twice daily for three days. HRV and anxiety levels were measured pre- and post-intervention using standard laboratory instruments and validated questionnaires. Results showed a significant effect (p = 0.000 < 0.05), indicating that breastfeeding interventions with an oxytocin carrier effectively reduced maternal anxiety and improved HRV in both mothers and infants. This approach supports maternal mental health, breastfeeding success, and strengthens the physiological bond between mother and infant. It is recommended to integrate breastfeeding education highlighting its benefits for autonomic balance, anxiety reduction, and overall maternal-infant well-being.

Abstract

Background: The increase in the number of home births highlights the importance of understanding the factors that influence access to health services for childbirth. Purpose: The aim of this scoping review was to identify the best evidence on factors influencing access to health services and choice to give birth at home. Methods: The database was searched from 2019 to 2024 from various databases, including PubMed, Science Direct, and Wiley. As well as using search engines such as Google Scholar and Research Rabbit and selecting them using Mendeley's help. Critical appraisal and data charts were adopted from the JBI checklist, including cross-sectional, case-control, and qualitative exploratory JBI. From the 1598 articles identified, only eleven met the inclusion criteria. Results: The results of this review identified three themes, including factors influencing access to health services for home birth, the impact of limitations and the main barriers faced by mothers. Conclusion: Access to health services for mothers who give birth at home is limited by various factors, including but not limited to geography, economy, education, socio-culture, and occupation, among others. Improving access to maternal health services should focus on more affordable facilities, better maternal and family health education, and socio-cultural changes that support delivery in health facilities. As a result, these barriers reduce the utilization of health facilities, which increases the risk of complications and maternal mortality.
