Abstract

Temperature increase in solar panels is one of the main factors that reduces energy conversion efficiency in Solar Power Plant systems. To address this issue, fluid-based cooling methods have become an effective alternative in maintaining panel performance stability. This study analyzes the performance comparison of cooling systems using freshwater and saltwater on panel temperature changes and their effects on power output efficiency. The experimental method was conducted by operating solar panels under the same solar radiation conditions, then applying two types of cooling fluids separately to observe differences in temperature reduction and electrical performance improvement. The analysis results show that both cooling methods can significantly reduce panel temperature, but there are differences in thermal characteristics between them. Cooling using saltwater demonstrates better heat transfer capability, but potentially causes corrosion effects in the long term. Meanwhile, freshwater provides quite effective cooling stability with lower damage risk. These findings provide a comprehensive overview regarding the selection of optimal cooling media to enhance PV system efficiency in tropical conditions.

Abstract

Abstract

The increasing demand for electrical energy and the growing distance between power generation sources and load centers require transmission systems capable of delivering large amounts of power efficiently and reliably. Ultra-High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) technology has emerged as an effective solution for long-distance, high-capacity power transmission, offering lower power losses and higher efficiency compared to conventional transmission systems. This study aims to analyze the performance of electric power transmission systems using UHVDC technology, identify factors affecting system performance, and evaluate the impact of transmission distance on system efficiency and reliability. The research employs a quantitative descriptive approach through modeling and simulation of a UHVDC transmission system. Key performance parameters analyzed include power losses, transmission efficiency, voltage stability, and power transfer capability under various transmission distance scenarios. The results indicate that UHVDC systems are capable of transmitting large-scale power over long distances with relatively low power losses. Although increasing transmission distance leads to higher power losses, the rate of increase is significantly lower than that of conventional alternating current (AC) transmission systems, allowing UHVDC systems to maintain high efficiency. Furthermore, the UHVDC system demonstrates good voltage stability and operational reliability when operating within its design limits. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that UHVDC technology is a reliable and efficient solution for long-distance, high-capacity power transmission and has strong potential to support large-scale renewable energy integration and the development of modern power system infrastructure.

Abstract

A transformer is a vital component in the electrical power distribution system that functions to transfer energy from medium voltage to low voltage. The reliability of a transformer is highly influenced by the thermal condition of its insulation, which determines its service life. This study aims to predict the effective lifespan of a 1250 kVA distribution transformer at PT. Ultra Sumatra Dairy Farm uses the thermal aging method based on the IEEE C57.91-2011 standard. The data used includes nameplate information, daily load profiles, and average ambient temperature. Based on the measurements, the transformer operates at an average load of 422.7 kVA (33.8% of its rated capacity) and an ambient temperature of 23°C. The calculated results show a hottest-spot temperature of 49.55°C with an aging acceleration factor (FAA) of 0.000649. The daily Loss of Life (LOL) value of 0.00000865% indicates that thermal aging occurs very slowly. Based on the Equivalent Aging Factor (FEQA), the theoretical effective lifespan of the transformer reaches approximately 31,660 years. However, in practice, the actual lifespan of the transformer is estimated to range between 25–35 years due to non-thermal factors such as moisture, oil oxidation, and load fluctuations. These results indicate that the thermal condition of the transformer remains very safe and efficient for long-term operation.

Abstract

Hotel Danau Toba Internasional Medan consumes a large amount of electricity due to the use of inductive and non-linear loads, which can reduce power quality. This study aims to evaluate the existing power quality and assess the effect of installing capacitor banks and harmonic filters in improving the efficiency and reliability of the electrical system. The methods used in this study include direct measurements, analysis referring to the IEEE Std. 519-2014 standard, and simulations with ETAP software version 16.0.0. The measurement results show a low power factor of 0.759, with a voltage drop reaching 15.65 kV from a nominal voltage of 20 kV, and the highest voltage unbalance recorded at 2.64% on panel 1 during the weekend. Based on the simulation results, the installation of a capacitor bank with a capacity of 525.22 kVAR can improve the power factor to 0.972 and reduce the current from 2015.2 A to 1782.6 A. To prevent resonance caused by harmonics, a reactor detuned by 8% is used. This implementation has been proven to increase energy efficiency, maintain system stability, and generate operational cost savings of IDR 221,400,000 annually.
