Abstract

Rural public facilities in Indonesia face significant energy efficiency challenges due to inadequate management systems, aging infrastructure, and limited technical capacity. This study develops a smart energy coordination platform integrating IoT sensors and wireless communication networks for five public facilities in Petumbukan Village, North Sumatra. Six-month continuous monitoring using power quality analyzers and IoT data loggers revealed 310.7 kWh/day total consumption with 0.43 load factor, 40.7 kW peak demand, and 1.27 diversity factor across facilities. Comprehensive energy audit identified 17.7 kW total losses (43.5% of peak load), with lighting inefficiency representing the primary concern at 8.5 kW (20.9% of system load). The proposed four-layer IoT architecture implements smart meters, environmental sensors, LoRaWAN communication, and edge computing devices for real-time monitoring and automated control. Multi-facility coordination algorithms leverage load diversity to achieve 22% annual energy savings (56,327 kWh) through optimized scheduling and demand management. System performance demonstrates 15% peak demand reduction, load factor improvement from 0.43 to 0.52, and sub-5-minute response times for automated load adjustments. The platform provides a technically feasible and replicable framework for rural electrification optimization in developing countries, addressing the gap between urban-focused smart grid solutions and rural infrastructure constraints.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of power system technologies has significantly transformed the way electrical power quality (PQ) is monitored, managed, and improved. The increasing penetration of non-linear loads, automation systems, and renewable energy sources has intensified power quality challenges, including harmonic distortion, voltage sags, voltage fluctuations, and transient disturbances. This study aims to analyze the impact of modern technological approaches on power quality enhancement in contemporary power systems. A descriptive-analytical research methodology was employed through a systematic review of recent scientific literature, international standards, and technical reports related to power quality management. The collected data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis and comparative evaluation to assess the effectiveness of automation, machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring systems, and power electronic mitigation devices. The results indicate that integrated technological solutions significantly improve power quality performance compared to conventional approaches. Machine learning techniques, particularly Artificial Neural Networks, demonstrate high accuracy in disturbance classification and adaptive control, while IoT-based systems enable real-time monitoring and rapid response to power quality deviations. Furthermore, power electronic devices such as Active Power Filters, Static Var Compensators, and Dynamic Voltage Restorers effectively mitigate harmonics and stabilize voltage. However, challenges related to implementation cost, system complexity, cybersecurity, and regulatory inconsistency remain. The study concludes that an integrated, intelligent, and data-driven framework is essential for sustainable power quality management in modern power systems.

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the dielectric quality of a 60 MVA power transformer at the Kisaran 150kV Substation, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The transformer, manufactured by PAUWELS TRAFO and operated since 2011, operates at an average load of 33% with an ONAN/ONAF cooling system. Dielectric testing yielded a breakdown voltage of 80.2 kV, a moisture content of 17.62 mg/kg, an acid number of 0.108 mgKOH/g, and dissipation factors of 0.173% (primary), 0.190% (secondary), and 0.243% (tertiary). The bushing dissipation factor ranged from 0.247% to 0.271%. The interfacial tension measured 26.8 mN/m with a flash point at 148°C. Insulation resistance testing showed values of 4.9 GΩ (primary), 3.41 GΩ (secondary), and 3.40 GΩ (tertiary) with polarization indices of 3.06, 1.48, and 1.47, respectively. Operating temperatures remained within acceptable limits at 63°C (peak oil) and 62°C (winding). Analysis based on IEC 60422:2013 and PLN standards indicated that the transformer was in good operational condition with all parameters within acceptable ranges, although the interface voltage was close to the warning threshold. This study provides valuable baseline data for predictive maintenance strategies and demonstrates the importance of integrated dielectric testing for transformer health assessment.

Abstract

A transformer is a vital component in the electrical power distribution system that functions to transfer energy from medium voltage to low voltage. The reliability of a transformer is highly influenced by the thermal condition of its insulation, which determines its service life. This study aims to predict the effective lifespan of a 1250 kVA distribution transformer at PT. Ultra Sumatra Dairy Farm uses the thermal aging method based on the IEEE C57.91-2011 standard. The data used includes nameplate information, daily load profiles, and average ambient temperature. Based on the measurements, the transformer operates at an average load of 422.7 kVA (33.8% of its rated capacity) and an ambient temperature of 23°C. The calculated results show a hottest-spot temperature of 49.55°C with an aging acceleration factor (FAA) of 0.000649. The daily Loss of Life (LOL) value of 0.00000865% indicates that thermal aging occurs very slowly. Based on the Equivalent Aging Factor (FEQA), the theoretical effective lifespan of the transformer reaches approximately 31,660 years. However, in practice, the actual lifespan of the transformer is estimated to range between 25–35 years due to non-thermal factors such as moisture, oil oxidation, and load fluctuations. These results indicate that the thermal condition of the transformer remains very safe and efficient for long-term operation.
