Abstract

The stability of a three-phase power supply is crucial for ensuring the reliable operation of photography studio equipment, which is generally sensitive to electrical disturbances. One common disturbance is phase failure, which can cause equipment damage, reduced work quality, and safety risks. This study aims to analyze and implement a microcontroller-based phase failure detector system capable of detecting abnormal conditions in a photography studio's electrical system quickly and accurately. The system is designed using an ATmega328P microcontroller integrated with voltage sensors on each phase. When one of the phases fails, the system will provide a warning via a buzzer and LED indicator, and can optionally disconnect the load to prevent further damage. Test results show that this detector is capable of detecting the loss of a phase in less than 1 second with an accuracy level of XX% (adjusted based on the results). Thus, this system can improve protection for studio equipment and support more reliable operations.

Abstract

Temperature increase in solar panels is one of the main factors that reduces energy conversion efficiency in Solar Power Plant systems. To address this issue, fluid-based cooling methods have become an effective alternative in maintaining panel performance stability. This study analyzes the performance comparison of cooling systems using freshwater and saltwater on panel temperature changes and their effects on power output efficiency. The experimental method was conducted by operating solar panels under the same solar radiation conditions, then applying two types of cooling fluids separately to observe differences in temperature reduction and electrical performance improvement. The analysis results show that both cooling methods can significantly reduce panel temperature, but there are differences in thermal characteristics between them. Cooling using saltwater demonstrates better heat transfer capability, but potentially causes corrosion effects in the long term. Meanwhile, freshwater provides quite effective cooling stability with lower damage risk. These findings provide a comprehensive overview regarding the selection of optimal cooling media to enhance PV system efficiency in tropical conditions.

Abstract

Fiber-optic communication networks play a crucial role in ensuring smooth high-speed data transmission. However, in lightning-prone areas, these networks are susceptible to disruptions due to voltage surges and power outages, which can degrade service quality. This study aims to analyze the reliability of the power supply and protection systems used in fiber-optic network infrastructure in lightning-prone areas. The research methods include field surveys, power quality measurements, and evaluation of the lightning protection and grounding system designs used. Data were collected from measurements of voltage, current, and duration of electrical disturbances, as well as interviews with network technicians. The analysis results indicate that most disturbances are caused by voltage surges due to indirect lightning strikes that propagate through the power supply lines. Implementation of a protection system that combines surge arresters, effective grounding, and backup power sources (UPS and generators) has been shown to increase network reliability by up to 92% based on Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) calculations. This study recommends the implementation of a layered protection system with regular maintenance to minimize the impact of electrical disturbances on fiber-optic networks in lightning-prone areas.

Abstract

The rapid growth of Medan as North Sumatra's largest city has increased pressure on its traditional commercial areas, one of which is Pajak Ikan Lama, a long-established textile trading center located in the historic Kesawan area. Uncontrolled pedestrian and vehicle circulation, limited parking availability, and the absence of integrated open space have reduced comfort for both traders and visitors. This community service activity aimed to produce a spatial arrangement study for Pajak Ikan Lama through a landscape design approach, focusing on a skywalk facility as a solution to circulation congestion while preserving the area's historic buildings. The activity applied a descriptive-qualitative method combining field observation, documentation, literature review, and interviews with traders and officials, followed by socialization to the Medan City Housing, Settlement Area, and Spatial Planning Office. The results show that Pajak Ikan Lama holds strong economic potential as a textile trade center as well as historical and cultural potential, marked by heritage buildings such as the Tjong A Fie Mansion and the Lonsum Building. The proposed design consists of an area zoning plan, a skywalk route connecting Jalan Ahmad Yani and Jalan Pulau Pinang, and supporting elements such as active and passive outdoor spaces, parking areas, pedestrian pathways, street lighting, and street furniture. The design was presented to the Medan City Housing, Settlement Area, and Spatial Planning Office as an input for future area planning. This study is expected to serve as a reference for the local government in resolving circulation problems and revitalizing Pajak Ikan Lama as a shopping and heritage tourism area.

Abstract

A microhydro power plant (PLTMH) utilizes flowing water, such as rivers or natural waterfalls. A microhydro power plant has a main component called a turbine. The turbine converts the kinetic energy of the fluid into mechanical energy, which is then converted into electrical energy by a generator, one of which is a crossflow turbine. In this study, the crossflow turbine was chosen as a material for the study to analyze several designs including variations in the number of blades, diameter, angle and variations in nozzle design that have an impact on sustainable efficiency where the design of the variation in the number of blades 28 effectively affects the efficiency value with the power produced 24.41kW and for the efficiency value of 79% because it is very optimal while from the variation in the number of blades 26 and 30 the efficiency decreases at 72%, 76%, for angles <30o with an ideal efficiency value of 78%. Water comes out of the first phase blade radially towards the center of the runner, then crosses at the right angle to hit the opposite blade in the second phase and the semi-elliptical or curved nozzle design is a very optimal design for increasing the performance and efficiency of the crossflow turbine in the MHP system.

Abstract

The electric power distribution system plays a critical role in delivering electrical energy from sub-stations to final consumers. Voltage quality is a key indicator of distribution system reliability, as unstable voltage can cause equipment malfunctions and reduce customer satisfaction. Voltage drop often occurs in distribution feeders due to line length, high load, and conductor characteristics. This condition is also identified in the TC-11 Express Feeder at the Pulo Tiga Switchyard, supplied by the Tualang Cut Sub-station under PT PLN (Persero) UP3 Langsa, where a decline in voltage quality has been observed at several network points. This study aims to analyze the voltage profile, identify the primary factors causing voltage drop, and determine the most effective improvement methods to enhance voltage quality. The research methodology adopts a descriptive-analytical approach combined with quantitative analysis using technical network data, including load current, line impedance, and feeder length. The standard references utilized are SPLN D3.002-1: 2012 guidelines. Technical improvement methods evaluated in this study are network reconfiguration, capacitor bank installation, and transformer tap changer adjustment. The results of this study are expected to provide an objective technical reference for PLN in optimizing voltage profiles and ensuring sustainable electricity service quality.

Abstract

This study analyzes the electrical energy requirements of the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) transmission room at the Telkom Tanjung Morawa Office using a load forecasting approach based on historical data for the 2021–2023 period. This applied research uses a descriptive-analytical quantitative approach and compares three forecasting methods, namely Linear Regression, Double Exponential Smoothing (DES), and ARIMA, which are validated using MAE, RMSE, and MAPE. The results show that energy consumption increased from 555,000 kWh in 2021 to 670,800 kWh in 2023, with an average annual growth of 9.9%. The ARIMA(2,1,1) model provides the best accuracy with a MAPE of 3.9%, compared with DES at 6.8% and Linear Regression at 11.4%. The projected energy requirements for 2024–2026 are 733,800 kWh, 804,000 kWh, and 878,400 kWh, respectively. The estimated peak load is projected to exceed the safe utilization threshold of 80% of the installed capacity of 135 kW by mid-2025. These results indicate the need to plan an increase in electrical system capacity before that period to maintain the operational reliability of the OLT transmission room
