Abstract

This study investigated the faithful translation features of ChatGPT in translating figurative language from English to Indonesian, using Newmark’s (1988) faithful translation theory. It applied a qualitative descriptive method by inputting selected lyric lines into ChatGPT and comparing the outputs closely with the source text. The data were taken from Taylor Swift’s song “You’re Losing Me” and classified into metaphors, hyperboles, and ironies. Each translation was assessed based on how well it preserved contextual meaning, imagery, and stylistic effect while still sounding natural in Indonesian. The findings show that ChatGPT often produced translations aligned with faithful translation principles, especially when expressions were culturally transferable. However, it showed limitations in rendering culturally embedded or emotionally expressions. Overall, ChatGPT can function as a useful preliminary tool, but post-editing and collaboration with human translators remain essential to ensure accuracy, tone, and interpretive depth.

Abstract

This study investigates the local knowledge represented in the performance of the Rejang Wastra dance, which forms an integral part of Hindu religious ceremonies in Demulih village, Susut subdistrict, Bangli regency, Bali. Respected by the local community, this sacred dance embodies profound symbolic, functional, and philosophical meanings. Using a qualitative approach based on the exploration of traditional dance characteristics, the study reveals two main forms of local wisdom. The first finding shows that the dance represents the traditional market practice before ceremonies, symbolizing interdependence and ritual preparation. The second finding indicates that it illustrates stages of human life in Hindu philosophy, portraying a spiritual journey from birth to unity with the divine. Both meanings express the Balinese concept of Tri Hita Karana, emphasizing harmony among humans, God (Parahyangan), nature (Palemahan), and society (Pawongan). Overall, Rejang Wastra is not only a ritual dance but also a living medium that transmits local knowledge and ethical values, preserving cultural wisdom within Balinese society.

Abstract

Although efforts have been made to reduce gender bias in textbooks, Indonesian English textbooks still tend to reproduce gender-biased oppositions that support patriarchal values. This study aims to analyze how patriarchal values are deconstructed in conversational texts. The research subject was the Indonesian English textbook for the eleventh grade published by the Ministry of Education in 2017, which contains eight chapters and twenty-one conversations. Through McKee's model of textual analysis, this study reveals that the textbook shows a balanced frequency between male and female characters in giving opinions and asking for decisions, with females slightly dominating decision-making. Female characters asked for suggestions more frequently, while males slightly dominated in giving suggestions and more significantly in giving answers. Agreement was more common among females, while males dominated disagreement. While female characters were positioned as decision-makers, this was undermined by the high frequency of male disagreement. The study reveals ambivalence in the deconstruction of male dominance, indicating that stronger efforts are needed to promote gender equality through textbook content.

Abstract

This paper focuses on undergraduate students’ critical reflection in a service-learning (S-L) project to promote the conservation of the birds based on local wisdom in a village in Bali. The students are working in a partnership with researchers and local communities from a traditional rural village, namely Desa Adat Demulih, Bangli regency. The objective of this paper is to show what students can learn and how they gain personal growth, civic-learning and academic enhancement during the S-L project. The finding shows students’ positive improvements in self-confidence, civic awareness, and community engagement. This study indicates a significance role of S-L based on critical reflection in documenting, deepening and promoting local identity and culture as a key component of community-bird conservation. In line with the finding, this study is expected to show how the interdisciplinary studies are cooperatively applied to draw knowledge from different disciplines by acquiring mutual relationship in learning their local knowledge.
