Abstract

Developing students' 21st-century competencies—critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity (4C)—remains a significant challenge, especially in remote and resource-limited schools. This study investigates the effectiveness of a Deep Learning STEAM model in improving 4C skills among elementary students. A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was employed with 21 fourth-grade students at SDN Masalima IV, a remote island school in Sumenep Regency, Indonesia. The intervention integrated Deep Learning principles (meaningful, mindful, joyful learning) into a five-phase STEAM model: Observation, New Idea, Innovation, Creativity, and Society. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests of 4C skills, classroom observations, interviews, and student project documentation. Quantitative data were analyzed using paired-sample t-tests, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. Statistical analysis showed a significant increase in students’ 4C scores from a mean of 47.19 to 81.67 (p 0.001), with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 4.72) and normalized gain (n-gain = 0.75). Thematic findings revealed enhanced student engagement, reasoning, collaboration, and creative output during project-based learning, supported by increased self-confidence and reflective thinking. The Deep Learning STEAM model proved effective in enhancing 4C skills within a low-resource context by aligning cognitive depth with interdisciplinary and experiential learning. It offers a scalable, context-sensitive strategy for implementing 21st-century skills education in remote areas.

Abstract

Abstract

Purpose of the study: Physical Education, Sports, and Health are vital in developing elementary school students' fundamental motor skills. However, previous studies have often examined students' perceptions of physical education and motor skill development separately, overlooking how students' subjective experiences and attitudes toward Physical Education, Sports, and Health directly relate to measurable motor skill outcomes. Methodology: The research employed a quantitative survey involving 40 randomly selected 5th-grade elementary school students. Data were collected using a closed-ended Likert-scale questionnaire designed and validated for elementary students, measuring perceptions across six dimensions, and an observation checklist aligned with the national curriculum indicators to assess basic motor skills. Main Findings: The results showed that 75% of students reported high enjoyment of Physical Education lessons, and 65% actively participated in physical activities during class. Observations indicated that most students demonstrated strong locomotor and manipulative skills, though balance and coordination still required development. The analysis suggested that students who reported higher enjoyment and perceived benefits of Physical Education tended to show better motor skills, indicating a positive correlation between perception and skill development. Novelty/Originality of this study: The findings highlight the need for more inclusive and engaging Physical Education, Sports, and Health curricula that foster enjoyment and systematically develop under-emphasized skills like balance and coordination. This study contributes novel empirical evidence linking students' subjective perceptions with objective motor skill outcomes in Indonesian elementary education, an area largely overlooked in prior research.

Abstract

This research aims to determine factors that can increase students' interest in learning in Civics subjects. The type of research used in this research is qualitative research using qualitative descriptive methods. The data collection used was observation, interviews and literature study. In the learning process, a student's interest in learning is very important in the teaching and learning process, because if a student has low interest in learning, it will be difficult for him to receive knowledge from the teacher, so that learning outcomes will be less effective. The main factor that influences students' interest in learning is themselves, especially interest, talent, motivation, especially in Civics subjects. Civics is a subject that often uses the lecture method, which makes students quickly get bored with the method used by the teacher. As a professional teacher, the teacher must be able to apply a learning method or model that suits the student's personality as an attraction to increase student interest in learning. Another factor that influences students' interest in learning comes from parents as a circle of friends in providing stimulus to children, apart from that it also comes from the school and surrounding environment. Proper and continuous stimulus from parents can give rise to positive encouragement for children to be more diligent and active in learning

Abstract

The study of the Qur'an has undergone significant development, extending into socio-cultural aspects that involve the community as both subject and object. This article examines a religious ritual in the form of a sampan making ceremony in the hamlet of Sarotak, Poteran Village, Talango District, Sumenep Regency. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with Edmund Husserl's phenomenological analysis. This study found that, first, the origins of the salametan sampan tradition are unknown, as this tradition is part of the cultural heritage passed down by ancestors. Second, there are two stages in the salametan ritual: the first stage is called “makabin sampan” and the second stage is called “matoron sampan.” During both rituals, selected surahs from the Qur'an are recited. Surah an-Nūr, al-Qalam, al-Waqi'ah, Yasin, and ar-Raḥmān are the most popular surahs. Third, the meaning of reciting selected surahs in the salametan tradition is essentially as a means of striving for the sampan that will be used to seek sustenance to obtain blessings and safety. Phenomenological reduction analysis explains that the tradition of salametan sampan making is a dynamic religious practice as a form of spiritual action. Its eidetic reduction is to give thanks and ask for blessings, while also creating a sense of community and solidarity among the Sarotak people. Its transcendental reduction states that the salametan sampan is an effort to get closer to God, ask for safety, and hope for His blessing.
