Abstract

This study aims to document the assessment of alumni of teachers professional education program (PPG) in Riau University on the effectiveness of the PPG program in preparing prospective professional English teachers. All alumni of the 2018 subsidized PPG program at the University were selected as the sample of this study (15 people). Data was collected through the distribution of a Google form-based survey which was adopted from the PPG program evaluation questionnaire from the Ministry of Education, Higher Education. This study found that from the curriculum aspect, 84.6% of alumni said that the PPG curriculum content was in accordance with the needs of pre-service English teachers. However, 76.9% of participants stated that most of the material had been studied when they were in the undergraduate program. In terms of learning facilities, only 23.1% answered that they were satisfied with PPG facilities. 46.2% of them stated that the lecture room was not feasible. From the aspect of organizing services to students, only 42.6% said they were satisfied. The rest answered simply enough. From the aspect of the impact of the program, 69.2% of participants admitted that PPG had a significant impact on the development of their teaching profession. The greatest impact is on the aspect of both professional and pedagogical competencies. Thus, even though PPG is generally considered to be running quite well and has a positive impact, there are several aspects that need to be the attention of PPG organizers for the improvement of PPG in the future.

Abstract

This paper documents a fragment of a story in my life that plays a significant role in shaping my identity as an English teacher and influencing me in deciding to become an English teacher as my career choice. This study's research question is 'how and why did I decide to become an English teacher?'. This study was conducted using the "narrative inquiry" method underthe qualitative research paradigm. The study is carried out by describing an individual's life, collecting and retelling parts of his life relevant to the research topic. In this study, the fragments of the story that are retold are the writer's own experience. This study shows that a person's journey to become a teacher can start long before he/she enters a teacher education institution. A person's decision to become a teacher can come internally and come from external factors, such as the influence of 'significant others', socio-cultural factors, economic factors, and teacher political factors. All of these factors are intertwined or influence a person's final decision on whether to choose a career as a teacher or not.

The questionnaires in the survey used Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) proposed by Davis (1986) with four indicators to measure the students’ acceptance: Perceived Usefulness (PU), Perceived Ease of Use (PEU),  Behavioral Intention (BI), and Actual System Use (AU).   The students’ acceptance levels in terms of  Perceived usefulness (62,8%) was in very good category; Perceived Ease of Use (67,2%) was in very good category; Behavioral Intention (69%) was in very good category; and Actual System Use (48,55%) was  good category. The result shows that the level of the students’ acceptance of Google Classroom, in general, is Very Good (62%). It means, the students positively accepted Google Classroom as a platform in blended-learning. Behavioral Intention was the indicator with the highest percentage (69%) which explains that students are interested and intend to increase their use of the Google Classroom.
