Abstract

This study examines the essence of world life through Tasawuf Irfani, which emphasizes intellectual understanding of divine knowledge and soul purification. It explores how these teachings shape Indonesian Muslims' perspectives on materialism, wealth, and life's true purpose. The study emphasizes the increasing focus on how Tasawuf Irfani tackles materialism, consumerism, and spiritual fulfillment, while existing literature mainly explores its philosophical aspects, neglecting its practical implementation in Indonesian society. This qualitative study uses literature review and textual analysis to explore Tasawuf Irfani’s teachings, Islamic views on worldly life, and their impact on socio-economic behaviors, focusing on the balance between material success and spiritual growth in Indonesia. The results reveal that Tasawuf Irfani provides a profound critique of materialism and consumerism, encouraging Indonesian Muslims to view wealth and worldly success as tools for spiritual growth rather than ultimate goals. It also fosters qualities such as humility, moderation and social responsibility. On the other hand, the study points out challenges like the risk of overly disengaging from material pursuits, which may result in limited involvement with pressing social issues in a pragmatic sense. Tasawuf Irfani concludes with a spiritually based perspective concerning wealth and success, suggesting potential integration within education and community initiatives to alleviate socio-economic issues in Indonesia, which can be the focus of future research.

Abstract

The existence of social demands and ideal images that must be maintained on their main Instagram accounts limits students' interactions. To express their more honest personal sides, many students choose to create second Instagram accounts as a space for freer and more authentic expression. This study aims to understand how PAI UIN Palangka Raya students use their second Instagram accounts as a means of self-expression and personal spirituality. Using a mixed method with a Sequential Explanatory design, data were collected through questionnaires (Google Form) and in-depth interviews, then analyzed using SPSS 27. The research findings show that the use of Instagram second accounts and the level of self-expression of PAI students are in the moderate category, with an average of 36.75 and 35.50, respectively. Regression analysis shows a positive and significant effect of the second account on self-expression (B = 0.585; p = 0.000), meaning that the more active students in using their second account, the higher their self-expression on social media. Behind this data, it turns out that Instagram is not only a means of social communication, but also a space for reflection in line with urban Sufism values to integrate modern life with spiritual practices. Students post spiritual reflections, prayers, and feelings that cannot be displayed on their main accounts. These findings have implications for educational institutions, particularly Islamic Education Study Programs, to take advantage of this phenomenon as an opportunity to encourage students to express religious and humanitarian values creatively on social media, while maintaining academic ethics and norms.

Abstract

Strengthening religious moderation in Indonesia is urgent nowadays due to the increasing level of global polarization and religious sectarianism. Here, the university and pesantren’s roles are crucial. However, local tradition containing similar values has not received proper attention, both from policymakers and academia. Therefore, this article explores the nyadran tradition in Ngayung Village, Lamongan, East Java as an example of Islamic moderation based on Javanese wisdom. This article addresses how nyadran serves as a mediator to maintain interreligious harmony in an Islamic moderation perspective carried out through tawasuth, tasamuh, i'tidal, al-Iṣlāḥ, al-qudwah, and muwāṭanah. This study utilized a qualitative ethnographic approach. During the six-month data collection, researchers employed participant observation, in-depth interviews with 18 informants, including religious leaders, village elders and youth, and document analysis. The findings indicate that nyadran offers a microcosmic example of Islamic dialogical life because of its inclusive nature of people from various social backgrounds and religious persuasions. Besides holding on to tradition, the community also creatively reinterprets nyadran as tathawwur wa ibtikār amidst the burgeoning influence of urban religiosity and digital religious narratives. Analytically, nyadran functions as a hybrid social mechanism bridging rural piety and urban religious awareness, resulting in a culturally rooted form of religious moderation. This study contributes to strengthening religious moderation discourse by demonstrating local traditions as a sustainable framework for maintaining harmony in an increasingly diverse and modern Indonesian Muslim society.

Abstract

This article explores the issue of ethnographic-based interlegality of living fiqh in Minangkabau marriage practices. The purpose is to explain the uniqueness of negotiation and the embodiment of Islamic jurisprudence within Minangkabau socio-cultural settings. This study emphasizes the cognitive biases of the dichotomy between local-global, peripheral-central, and traditional-modern. The data examined came from the experience of the Minangkabau community in internalizing Islamic marriage law as a living legal practice, ranging from the marriage procedure, marriage contract, walimah, mediation, to divorce. This research collected, analyzed, and interpreted empirical legal data that reveals the integration of Islamic, customary and state legal norms in marriage practice. The findings of this study show the existence of a legal tripartite legal construction: first, the practice of customary marriage formed by Islamic jurisprudence. Second, the awareness of Islamic law is influenced by customary law. Third, the regulatory intervention of the state that wants the formation of harmonization between customs and Islam. This study has implications for living fiqh literacy which shows the universal principles of sharia law in cross-cultural life.

Abstract

This study scrutinizes structural deficiencies in the governance of productive zakat distribution at BAZNAS Lampung Province, specifically focusing on the absence of empowerment-based distribution modules, mentorship practices that lack clear and measurable competency frameworks, and insufficient long-term monitoring mechanisms. Adopting a normative and empirical approach, the research derives data from in-depth interviews with amil and mustahik, complemented by an analysis of regulatory and institutional documents. Findings indicate that distribution remains predominantly administrative, mentorship lacks measurable competency indicators, and evaluation systems fail to capture sustained trajectories of mustahik business development. The novelty of this research lies in the formulation of an integrated module synthesizing legal perspectives, empowerment theory, and empirical practices to fortify zakat governance. The proposed module encompasses initial assessments, competency-based mentorship, and long-term performance evaluation systems. Theoretically, this study enriches the discourse on zakat governance; practically, it offers a replicable operational model to enhance accountability and mustahik self-reliance.

Abstract

This study is centered on exploring the implementation of Syirkah ‘Inan model as a strategy to build economic independence for lower-middle-class communities in Magelang City through organic fertilizer production. Therefore, a qualitative method and case study were adopted, with data collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The interview session was held with business actors, cooperation partners, local religious leaders, and related communities. The results showed that Syirkah ‘Inan functioned as an adaptive strategy to limited access to capital from conventional financial institutions. This was realized by facilitating the accumulation of interest-free collective capital through a fair and participatory partnership pattern. In addition, the internalization of Islamic values was reflected through orientation towards blessings, halal, and social responsibility rather than profit. This was supported by the Selapanan Forum (meeting every 35 days), an institutional innovation that integrated educational, managerial, and spiritual dimensions. The practice of Syirkah ‘Inan produced transformational impacts in three dimensions, namely economic (increased income and financial stability), social (strengthening community solidarity), and spiritual (cultivating values of honesty and trustworthiness). These attributes led to individual economic independence and community resilience that does not depend on external market mechanisms, rather on the endogenous strength of the community. Theoretically, the study reported the relevance of the Islamic jurisprudence principle in the context of modern economic. It showed that Islamic economic was an effective operational system starting from the micro-community level. As a result, Syirkah ‘Inan model was proven to be a theologically relevant and socially effective alternative for empowerment in building sustainable economic independence.

Abstract

The scientific interpretation of the Qur’an seeks to reconcile revelation with modern science through a rational and contextual approach. Within this field, Nidhal Guessoum, an astrophysicist and philosopher, emerges as a central figure who challenges the iʿjāz ʿilmi paradigm and literalist readings by proposing a multi-layered hermeneutic grounded in theology, language, and ethics. This study addresses the ongoing academic debate between iʿjāz ʿilmi advocates and critical contextualists, identifying the lack of systematic criteria for evaluating scientific interpretation as its primary research gap. The novelty of this research lies in operationalizing Guessoum’s method into a structured analytical framework applicable to contemporary studies. using a qualitative library-based method, the analysis employs close reading and thematic coding across theological, linguistic, and ethical dimensions, followed by a comparative appraisal to trace convergence and divergence between the two frameworks. The findings reveal, first, that Guessoum’s model balances scientific rationality with theological integrity through contextual interpretation; second, it redefines tafsīr ʿilmi as an ethical engagement rather than empirical validation; and third, it provides an interpretive model adaptable to urban Muslim contexts navigating faith and modernity. However, Guessoum’s method offers a critical yet constructive bridge between revelation and scientific inquiry. It contributes theoretically by refining evaluative tools for Qur’anic science discourse and practically by providing implications for educators and urban Muslim institutions to integrate scientific literacy with faith-based education.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of marital relationships within the Muslim community of Lombok, where high religiosity does not necessarily correspond to the achievement of the noble purposes of marriage. The high divorce rate is taken as evidence of difficulties in realizing the values of al-mawaddah (love) and ar-rahmah (compassion) within marital life. Employing a descriptive-analytic approach, the research integrates social exchange theory and a socio-religious framework, supported by empirical data on divorce rates. The findings indicate that the erosion of al-mawaddah and ar-rahmah values stems from a paradigm shift-from a marriage model grounded in mutual rights and obligations to one emphasizing individual freedom. This shift leads to emotional imbalance, communication breakdown, rising expectations and transformations in social values. From an Islamic perspective, marriage is not merely a transactional contract but a sacred covenant (mitsaqan ghalidzan) imbued with religious meaning. Al-mawaddah generates deep emotional attachment, while ar-rahmah nurtures endurance, patience, and sacrifice, thereby reinforcing marital harmony. The study contributes to understanding social changes within the marital institution in Lombok and underscores the significance of al-mawaddah and ar-rahmah as essential principles in sustaining marital stability and preventing divorce.

Abstract

This study examines Tingkilan music as a cultural medium that bridges Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s educational philosophy with the principles of Islamic law in shaping the moral and cultural character of urban Muslim communities. Originating from the Kutai people of East Kalimantan, Tingkilan music has long functioned not merely as artistic expression but also as a vehicle for transmitting ethical, social, and spiritual values rooted in Islamic teachings and local wisdom. In contemporary urban contexts—where Muslims increasingly seek to balance religious commitment with cultural identity—Tingkilan offers a meaningful and culturally grounded alternative. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, this research draws upon literature analysis and in-depth interviews with local artists and cultural figures engaged in the preservation and performance of Tingkilan. The data were analyzed by correlating the aesthetic and moral dimensions of Tingkilan music with the frameworks of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah and fiqh al-ḥaḍārah, both of which emphasize the adaptability of Islamic law within dynamic cultural and social contexts. The findings demonstrate a strong convergence between the values of creativity (cipta), sensibility (rasa), and intentionality (karsa) articulated by Ki Hadjar Dewantara and the objectives of Islamic law, particularly in promoting public welfare (al-maṣlaḥah), preserving human dignity (ḥifẓ al-‘irḍ), and fostering social harmony. Through its poetic lyrics and musical form, Tingkilan functions as a form of cultural da‘wah, conveying Islamic moral messages in a subtle yet aesthetic manner that enhances their accessibility among urban Muslim audiences. This study suggests that traditional Islamic arts such as Tingkilan can play a strategic role in character education, cultural preservation, and the promotion of moderate religious engagement. Accordingly, Tingkilan music represents a practical model for harmonizing education, sharia, and local culture within contemporary Indonesian Muslim society.

Abstract

The strengthening of academic culture in urban Madrasah Aliyah has become an urgent agenda amid increasing institutional competition, public accountability demands, and the transformation of Islamic secondary education in Indonesia. While numerous studies have addressed school quality improvement, limited research specifically examines how Total Quality Management (TQM) is systematically operationalized to construct a sustainable academic culture within urban madrasah settings. This study aims to explore and critically analyze the implementation of TQM principles in strengthening a sustainable academic culture across selected urban madrasah contexts. Using a qualitative multiple case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with principals, teachers, and quality assurance teams, supported by classroom observation and institutional document analysis. The findings demonstrate that academic culture strengthening is not merely programmatic but structurally embedded through five interrelated dimensions: visionary leadership grounded in quality commitment, continuous improvement in pedagogical practices, data-driven evaluation systems, collaborative teamwork mechanisms, and integration of Islamic values with academic performance standards. The study argues that TQM in urban madrasah functions as a cultural transformation framework rather than a managerial tool alone. This research contributes to the development of Islamic education management by contextualizing TQM within the sociocultural dynamics of urban madrasah and offering an integrative model that bridges managerial efficiency with value-based educational orientation. The findings offer both conceptual refinement and practical implications for enhancing a competitive yet value-driven academic culture in Islamic secondary education institutions.
