Abstract

The floods that hit Aceh Tamiang Regency, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province in November 2025 have seriously affected people's lives. Thousands of homes were submerged, access roads were cut off, infrastructure was damaged, and it's been hard to supply people's basic needs. This emergency situation requires a quick and coordinated response from various parties, including colleges and universities. This community service project aims to provide humanitarian assistance to flood victims through the distribution of basic food supplies, medicines, and other essential items. The partners in this community service project are the flood-affected communities in four locations (Buluh Butung Village, Purwodadi, Kota Lintang Bawah, and Landu) and the Aceh Tamiang Regional General Hospital. The method used is adapted from the principles of participatory action research, which includes team coordination, fundraising, procurement of aid, and distribution through direct delivery, assembly points, and door-to-door visits. The implementation team consisted of 42 people (7 lecturers, 5 students, and 30 volunteers) who successfully raised Rp 138,500,000. The activities were carried out on 5 and 8 November 2025 at five distribution points. The results of the community service programme show that 270 households (approximately 855 people) successfully received assistance in the form of 250 food packages, hundreds of bales of clothing, thousands of medicines and medical supplies, and other essential items. The community responded very positively with great enthusiasm, and the distribution ran smoothly. Feedback from beneficiaries indicated that the food parcels and medicines were highly effective in providing basic necessities, although there were still ongoing needs such as emergency tents, sleeping equipment, and water storage containers. This community service initiative demonstrated the importance of collaboration between colleges or universities, students, and volunteers in rapid disaster response, as well as the effectiveness of multi-location distribution adjusted to actual conditions on the ground.

Abstract

Riau is a province that pays quite a lot of attention to the spread of religious knowledge, but there is a prayer house and a Quran house whose productivity has declined due to the lack of interest and motivation of the local community in organizing activities or training that can develop the community's potential. Therefore, the aim of the KKNT activity is to optimize the prayer house and Qur'an house, provide examples of training and various activities, and appoint cadres to continue the activities and their modules. This research uses the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, collaborating with communities and society, discussing openly, preparing activity schedules and following up on each activity. So that during one month of KKNT activities, achievements have been realized in the form of; increasing the ability to read the Qur'an among mothers and children, the presence of new cadres who are ready to continue the tahsin program, increasing togetherness and social concern in the community, and the creation of useful handicraft products.

Abstract

Bangun Sari Village faces challenges in Islamic education, including youth promiscuity, low interest in religious gatherings, weak Qur'anic reading skills, and minimal parental attention to children's religious education. This study aims to revitalize the mosque's function as a center for Islamic education through KKNT, using Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) and Service Learning approaches. Service partners include community leaders, mosque administrators, BKM Istiqomah, ustadz, TPQ teachers, and residents of Bangun Sari Village Dusun XI. Data collection methods employed interviews, field observations, and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) with triangulation analysis. The program ran for two weeks (March 3-17, 2025) and encompassed youth coaching, Qur'anic tahsin guidance, Islamic studies, hijab awareness campaigns, and strategies to increase parental attention to TPQ. Results demonstrate significant improvements: youth participation in Islamic studies (80%), Qur'anic reading skills (70%), hijab awareness (60%), and parental attention to TPQ (50%). Participatory evaluation indicates program sustainability through local asset empowerment with community commitment to continue all activities post-KKNT.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) play a strategic role in fostering santripreneurship by integrating religious values with entrepreneurial skills to achieve economic independence. Pesantren Al-Hijrah owns 2,000 m² of waqf land and an idle fish pond; however, limited knowledge and skills in catfish farming hinder the utilization of these assets. This community service program aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of santri and teachers in catfish farming and to optimize pesantren assets for economic empowerment. The program was conducted from March 2–17, 2025, involving 13 santri and four teachers, using an action research design with an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach through four stages: Discovery, Dream, Design, and Destiny. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed descriptively. The results show a significant increase in participants’ competencies, with 100% able to explain the stages of farming, 94% able to select high-quality fingerlings, 88% able to master feeding and disease control, and 82% able to understand marketing strategies. Technical skills improved, with full participation in pond preparation and stocking, while entrepreneurial motivation reached 88%. Pesantren assets were successfully activated through the productive utilization of ponds and the strengthening of local practitioner networks. The ABCD approach proved effective in empowering santri and teachers toward sustainable santripreneurship. Continuous mentoring and institutional partnerships are recommended to ensure program sustainability.

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (IRE) plays a vital role in shaping students’ moral values and Islamic identity. However, its implementation in Muslim minority contexts is constrained by structural, social, and cultural challenges. This qualitative case study explores the limitations of IRE and identifies adaptive strategies in Nagori Tongah Village, Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis involving IRE teachers, school principals, Muslim community leaders, and parents, and were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model with triangulation. The findings indicate that IRE in Muslim minority settings faces limitations including a shortage of qualified teachers, inadequate facilities, weak institutional and policy support, and strong socio-cultural influences from non-Muslim environments. These constraints hinder the effective internalization of Islamic values, which remains largely cognitive rather than practical. The study highlights the urgency of contextual and collaborative educational approaches grounded in multicultural principles to strengthen IRE in Muslim minority areas. This research contributes to the development of inclusive and sustainable Islamic Religious Education policies and practices in minority contexts.

Abstract

Youth disengagement from religious institutions has become a growing concern in Muslim-majority societies, including Malaysia, where youth participation in mosque-based activities remains low despite strong state support. This participatory action research (PAR) study, conducted during Ramadan 1446 H (March 2–17, 2025) in Beranang, Selangor, examined the structural causes of youth disengagement and the transformative potential of authentic PAR that positions youth as co-researchers. Through four iterative PAR cycles involving 15 youth co-researchers and approximately 50 community youth, the study found that low participation is driven not by apathy but by structural barriers, including exclusion from decision-making, misalignment between religious discourse and contemporary realities, limited spaces for youth agency, and weak institutional management. The PAR process reshaped power relations across visible, hidden, and invisible dimensions, increasing participation from 1–2% to 7.6% and enabling 80% of co-researchers to assume leadership roles. Youth articulated meaningful spirituality through four interconnected dimensions—relevance, participation, community, and authenticity—challenging dominant prescriptive approaches. The establishment of a Youth Committee with formal decision-making authority, institutionalized through a Memorandum of Understanding with the mosque’s governing body, reflects a lasting structural transformation. This study argues that sustainable youth engagement in religious institutions requires redistributing power and redefining intergenerational relations rather than merely expanding youth programs.

Abstract

The flash flood disaster that struck Batu Busuak, Padang City, in November-December 2025 caused massive damage to residential areas. Within three weeks, this area experienced four consecutive flash floods that swept away 11 houses, severely damaged 46 houses, and forced hundreds of families to evacuate. This community service activity aimed to provide humanitarian aid in the form of necessities to flood victims through international collaboration between Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam (STAI) As-Sunnah Deli Serdang and Bayaan Association Singapore. The service partners were flood-affected communities in Koto Panjang Ikua Koto Sub-district, Koto Tangah District, and Batu Busuak, Lambung Bukik Sub-district, Pauh District, Padang City. Implementation methods included multi-institutional coordination, international fundraising, local procurement of aid, and door-to-door and distribution-point delivery. A total of IDR 57,000,000 was collected and used to procure necessity packages for 150 affected households. The activity was conducted on December 24-27, 2025, and was led directly by the Chairman of STAI As-Sunnah. The results showed that aid distribution successfully reached victims in isolated locations using adaptive methods according to field conditions. Community response was very positive despite high psychosocial trauma, where residents lived in constant vigilance against subsequent flood threats. This activity was also followed by sustainability programs, including plans to build mosques and bore wells, undertaken by Yayasan Peduli Kemanusiaan Arrisalah as long-term recovery efforts. The Singapore-Indonesia international collaboration in this activity demonstrated the effectiveness of global Islamic philanthropy networks for local emergency response.

Abstract

Non-formal Quranic educational institutions known as Taman Pendidikan Al-Qurʾān (TPA) play a strategic role in cultivating children's Islamic character; however, deficiencies in Quranic recitation proficiency, comprehension of daily supplications, and the practical internalisation of Islamic etiquette remain prevalent challenges in many TPA settings, including TPA At-Taqwa in Kelurahan Air Tiris, Kecamatan Kampar, Kabupaten Kampar, Riau Province. This community service programme aimed to strengthen the Islamic character of children through three integrated activities: Quranic tahsin instruction, daily prayer memorisation, and Islamic etiquette education. The programme was conducted as part of the Thematic Community Field Study (KKNT) of STAI As-Sunnah Deli Serdang in collaboration with TPA At-Taqwa Air Tiris, involving 50 child participants aged six to twelve years over the period of 3 to 17 March 2025. The Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach was employed as the overarching framework, with the talaqqi method applied specifically for Quranic and supplication instruction. The findings indicate that approximately 80 per cent of participants demonstrated measurable improvement in Quranic recitation ability and prayer memorisation, while 70 per cent responded correctly to etiquette-related questions in the evaluation quiz. Children also exhibited positive behavioural changes in daily life, including the spontaneous recitation of appropriate supplications, the correct performance of ritual purification (wuḍūʾ), and the adoption of courteous conduct in social interactions. This programme demonstrates that a structured, habituation-based approach effectively reinforces Islamic character formation in children at the grassroots level.

Abstract

This community service article reports on the implementation of Quranic learning management for the general community through a Thematic Community Service Programme (KKNT) conducted by students of the Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam (STAI) As-Sunnah, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, in collaboration with the community of Muara Lembu Village, Singingi Sub-district, Kuantan Singingi Regency, Riau Province, from 3 to 18 March 2025. The programme involved child learners aged 5 to 14 years, utilising the Community Based Research (CBR) method with a participatory action research framework. The objectives were: to inspire learners to love the Quran; to establish Quranic recitation improvement groups (tahsin); and to form memorisation groups (tahfiz) for seven selected surahs of Juz 30. Following two structured cycles of learning, approximately 95 per cent of learners successfully memorised seven surahs — Al-Dhuha (93), Al-Tin (95), Al-ʿAlaq (96), Al-Qadr (97), Al-Bayyinah (98), Al-Zalzalah (99), and Al-ʿAdiyat (100) — and demonstrated correct recitation in accordance with the rules of tajwid. The findings affirm that a structured, motivation-centred learning management approach, grounded in Islamic educational principles and community collaboration, yields measurable outcomes in Quranic literacy at the grassroots level.

Abstract

The rapid proliferation of digital technology has fundamentally altered the social landscape of children in Indonesia, including those in rural communities. Unregulated use of gadgets and online games among primary school pupils has been identified as a growing concern, contributing to the erosion of moral values, academic disengagement, and the weakening of family and social bonds—a condition acutely observed at SD Negeri 03 Koto Bangun, Nagari Koto Bangun, Kapur IX Sub-district, Lima Puluh Kota Regency, West Sumatra. This article aims to describe the implementation of a digital literacy education programme conducted as part of the Thematic Community Service Programme (Kuliah Kerja Nyata Tematik, KKNT) by students of STAI As-Sunnah Deli Serdang, while examining the effectiveness of the service learning approach as a community-based educational intervention. The community service partners comprised 191 participants, consisting of 127 pupils from Years 1 to 6, 11 teachers and educational staff, and 53 parents and guardians of SD Negeri 03 Koto Bangun. The programme was implemented through the five-stage service learning methodology: investigation, planning, action, reflection, and demonstration, conducted from 3 to 17 March 2025. The findings demonstrate that the programme succeeded in raising collective awareness among pupils, teachers, and parents regarding the adverse effects of unregulated gadget and online game use, and in fostering positive digital habits within the school community. Service learning proved to be an effective and replicable model for community-based digital literacy education, yielding a double-impact upon both community development and the professional formation of students as socially committed Muslim intellectuals.
