Abstract

Finland, as a Nordic country with a Muslim minority, seems to place a special position on Islamic education and makes it the same portion as the education of the majority religion such as Lutheran in the Finnish National Agency for Education (FNAE). The existence of 20 Finnish schools officially recognized by the government as having Muslim communities and providing Islamic education is evidence that the development of Islamic education in public schools is growing significantly. This article aims to showcase the Islamic education system in Finland and its management practices from the Islamic education practice documents issued by the FNAE. This study employed the Documentary Research (DR) method to explore primary data. The documents from the FNAE are the basis for all schools in Finland. This article demonstrates that the Principle of Justice regulates the right to religion, including freedom in religious education, the presence of Finnish Muslims in the past made the Muslim community recognized by the state along with the provision of Islamic education, and the position of Islamic education in the FNES is determined by the state where ‘religious education for students is by the religion they adhere to and believe in’. This is what makes Islamic education subjects taught two hours per week for a year, where the curriculum is designed for three contents: students’ understanding of Islam, views on world religions, and living a good life. This article argues that Islamic education in minority countries places the landscape of religiosity and inter-religious equality as state acceptance in organizing religious education for all communities.

Abstract

This research investigates the transformation of pesantren education through the reinforcement of core values, which are realized and implemented in various programs at pesantren. Employing a qualitative case study methodology, the study systematically explores pertinent issues, analyzes data, and presents findings. The focal point of this research is Nurul Jadid University (UNUJA), an Islamic boarding school located in Probolinggo, which has consistently upheld the Trilogy and Five Awareness of Students since its establishment. These values are not merely rhetorical but function as foundational guidelines for curriculum development, ensuring their application across all institutional levels. The research is structured into two primary segments: (1) the Trilogy paradigm and Five Awareness of Students, and (2) the implementation of the transformation of pesantren education through curriculum development at UNUJA. The results show that UNUJA preserves these values through five strategic initiatives: (1) integrating the pesantren curriculum with university courses by incorporating local content, (2) providing extracurricular programs to enhance student competencies, (3) organizing seminars, workshops, and public discussions, (4) executing the Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program while upholding pesantren values, and (5) enforcing campus regulations through an ethics court for both lecturers and students. The study suggests that UNUJA effectively integrates pesantren values with contemporary educational practices, thereby reinforcing its identity as a pesantren-based university. This approach yields graduates who are both ethically grounded and professionally competent, presenting a sustainable model for Islamic educational institutions as they navigate the challenges of modernization. The framework established by UNUJA serves as a valuable reference for other pesantren seeking to balance tradition with innovation.

Abstract

This article examines the tradition of Mangonggo within the Pattae tribal community, highlighting the interaction between local culture and Islamic teachings in Batetangnga. The Mangonggo durian is a traditional activity conducted by the Batetangnga community during periods of abundant fruit harvest. According to community leaders, this tradition predates the administrative establishment of Batetangnga village. The tradition embodies significant Islamic educational values. However, contemporary influences, including pragmatism and differing religious perspectives, have raised concerns about the preservation of this tradition. This research employs a qualitative methodology, with the researcher serving as the primary instrument for data collection through observation and interviews. The aim is to understand the challenges associated with preserving the Mangonggo tradition. In qualitative research, subjects are selected purposively; thus, this study will utilize purposive sampling to ensure that the data collected aligns with the research objectives. The findings of this study indicate that the Mangonggo durian tradition is a product of the interplay between culture and Islam within the Batetangnga community. This interaction is evident in the incorporation of religious symbols and instruments in the implementation process such as using the mosque as an information center, conducting prayers with religious texts, shifting societal paradigms, and involving religious leaders. Furthermore, the Mangonggo tradition, as a manifestation of the convergence of religion and culture, encompasses numerous Islamic educational values, including gratitude, sincerity, honesty, humility, and collaborative cooperation. The preservation of this local culture, exemplified by the Mangonggo tradition, serves as an alternative means of promoting Islam within the Batetangnga Village community. This approach has garnered government support as part of the religious moderation program, which emphasizes the importance of accommodating local culture.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of anti-violence education in creating a safe learning environment at Pondok Pesantren Modern Selamat Kendal. Islamic boarding schools are often environments where physical and psychological violence can occur due to strict disciplinary practices and rigid educational systems. However, the implementation of anti-violence education is expected to foster a more conducive atmosphere for the psychological and academic development of students. This research employs a qualitative case study approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings indicate that the implementation of anti-violence education in this pesantren has helped reduce incidents of violence, strengthen interpersonal relationships between teachers and students, and enhance the sense of safety and comfort in the learning environment. The application of anti-violence principles involves reinforcing religious values, ethical educational practices, and active engagement from the pesantren in providing guidance and counseling to students. The study also identifies challenges, such as resistance from some educators who still adhere to traditional methods. These findings contribute significantly to the development of more humanistic educational policies in Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

The emergence of pesantren without kiai signifies a diversification in the leadership and ownership models of pesantren in Indonesia. This study investigates the transformation of leadership and ownership in two pesantren located in Pekalongan, specifically Pondok Modern Al-Qur'an Buaran and International Muhammadiyah Boarding School (IMBS) Miftahul Ulum Pekajangan, both of which were established by non-kiai founders. Employing a qualitative-phenomenological approach, this research utilizes single-site and cross-site data analysis as modeled by Robert K. Yin. The findings indicate a transition from a traditional family-based leadership model to a more organizational structure. Furthermore, the ownership of pesantren has shifted to foundations or Islamic organizations. Consequently, the selection of pesantren caregivers is now determined by the institution or organization rather than by lineage. Nevertheless, the diverse leadership and ownership models do not reduce the interest of the community sending their children to these pesantren.

Abstract

This research responds to the increasing number of unemployed graduates of Islamic universities including IAIN Ponorogo. Improvement efforts are always made as a step to continuously improve the quality of graduates so that they are able to master and apply science and technology in line with the challenges of the times. The study aims to explore the role of the integration of faith, science, and charity as a guideline for scientific and institutional development at IAIN Ponorogo in the paradigm of market orientation versus humanism. Qualitative research approach, data collection was conducted through observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. Data analysis was conducted by data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings of this study; first, the reactualization of the integration of faith, science and charity as the development paradigm of IAIN Ponorogo is considered important and strategic after the institutional transformation from STAIN to IAIN 2016. IAIN Ponorogo did not have a scientific paradigm previously, so it was considered ineffective enough to guide the future development of IAIN Ponorogo. Second, the formulation of the paradigm of integration of the concepts of faith, science and charity is by positioning tawhid as the foundation in interpreting all forms of science. Science cannot be separated from Allah SWT, science must function to get closer to the Creator and encourage good deeds. Third, the response of the academic community of IAIN Ponorogo to the paradigm of integration of faith, science, and charity includes scientific works in the form of books and journal articles, verbal responses in discussion groups. The socialization and internalization of the integration of faith, science, and charity to the entire academic community of IAIN Ponorogo in its various forms needs to be continuously improved.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find a model of pesantren that survives in moderation of education and nationalism and analyze the role of pesantren in overcoming the humanitarian crisis in the era of disruption. This type of research is a case study with a qualitative approach. The results showed that as the largest pesantren in Banyuwangi Regency, Pesantren Darussalam Blokagung exemplifies its success in integrating religious and general education values in educational moderation, building a spirit of nationalism by actualizing a sense of love for the country, rejecting radical ideologies and opposing terrorism, and helping to realize pluralism in the context of security. Pesantren Darussalam Blokagung also plays an important role in multicultural education that teaches religious tolerance and moderation, mutual respect and appreciation in simplicity and independence. In addition, it also helps to overcome humanitarian crises by establishing the Darussalam Social Institute (LBD) which provides scholarships to underprivileged students, the Darussalam Counseling Center (DCC), a therapy center for mental problems and the provision of special dormitories in pesantren for students affected by humanitarian crises and social problems.
