Abstract

At the level of social life, the issue of femininity and masculinity is still a serious topic of discussion because in the construction of patriarchal culture, there is still a clear dichotomy. Femininity in Indonesian folklore is interesting to study because it presents a female figure who is different from the reality of society and who is able to deconstruct herself. The research objectives are to reveal (1) the role of femininity in female characters in building of themselves and the environment and (2) the strength of female characters' femininity in building their self-image as dignified beings. The method used in this research is a descriptive method, namely describing the issue of femininity in folklore. The approach used in this research is feminist, an approach that emphasizes the image of women and stereotypes of women in literary works. The research data are story sequences in the form of sentences and paragraphs that describe the values of femininity in Indonesian folklore. Data collection techniques were conducted through documentation studies include classifying and categorizing data, as well as critical and creative reading and finding the power of feminism in stories. Research data analysis techniques are carried out by understanding the meaning of the text in depth, observing and exploring the message, and analyzing it interactively and dialectically for the accuracy of the findings. The results show that (1) the role of femininity of female characters in Indonesian folklore is seen in how women develop themselves and the environment, which is marked by the appearance of empowered characters; and (2) the strength of femininity possessed by female characters in building their self-image as dignified beings is shown in their ability to carry out their duties in the domestic and public spheres in a balanced manner. Women's intelligence and ingenuity are demonstrated in developing strategies for dealing with problems. Moreover, women have strong authority and independence. The conclusion that can be drawn is that the representation of femininity in Indonesian folklore is that female characters are able to position themselves with the strength built by themselves and their environment.

Abstract

This study investigates language immersion programs run by first-grader's English language student. By conceiving the concept of immersion in relation to preservice and in-service teaching approaches that mirror natural settings, we want to explore how first grader who participate in immersion programs improve her English proficiency outside of the classroom. We examined how an Indonesian female elementary school student who was studying English acquired her oral fluency through immersion inside and outside of the classroom setting and how her English proficiency has altered over time through a qualitative case study. The information was gathered through observation and in-depth interviews, and it was then thematically evaluated according to. Our investigation produced four main themes: (1) Place-Based Geography, (2) Person-Based Classification, (3) Types-Based immersion, and (4) Oral Production Fluency based Predictors and Assessment. These interconnected topics show a description of the students' English skills and confirm the progress they made during the immersion program. The results offer teacher educators sophisticated insight into the ways in which immersion programs are extended through extracurricular activities, the multimodal character of literacies, and chances for social responsiveness. Each of these insights is especially helpful for English language teachers. In conclusion, three communities namely the school, participants’ home, and English learning center help participant to develop her speaking fluency.

Abstract

The exploration of hegemonic masculinity within the context of sex and gender roles in Indonesian novels is an intriguing subject for analysis. In light of this background, the present research aimed to (1) describe and explain the hegemonic masculinity in the characters of the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and (2) describe and explain the efforts of the characters in confronting the hegemonic masculinity in the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk.  This study adopted a qualitative descriptive research approach involving a content analysis strategy. The primary data source was Ahmad Tohari's novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk. Data collection techniques incorporated document analysis using the theory of hegemonic masculinity. Data validity was ensured through theory triangulation based on various theoretical perspectives. Data analysis followed an interactive approach, encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The research findings are as follows: (1) Hegemonic masculinity in the novel manifests as a cultural imposition of stigmas and limitations on women in the name of culture, evolving into societal consensus. It arises due to the gender roles deeply intertwined with the cultural values dominating society within a patriarchal culture. (2) The characters in the novel are powerless in the face of hegemonic masculinity, encompassing power relations, the presentation of gender roles, and cathexis due to the firm grip of patriarchal culture on the lives of the community in Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk. Hence, struggles to break free from hegemonic masculinity within a patriarchal culture ultimately fail.

Abstract

Indonesian internet users (Netizens) are considered uncivilized in using the internet. The Digital Civility Index (DCI) states that the politeness of Indonesian netizens was ranked 29th out of 32 countries and the worst in Southeast Asia. The uncivility of netizens is closely related to the use of emotive language, so it is necessary to study the use of emotive language by netizens. The emotive language of Indonesian netizens in responding to YouTube posts is very interesting to study from a cyberpragmatic perspective. Cyberpragmatic studies are the use of language and communication in a digital environment or in cyberspace. The problems studied in this study are formulated: (1) How is the lingual form of the emotive language of Indonesian netizens realized in responding to YouTube posts in a cyberpramatic perspective? And (2) How is the emotive language function of Indonesian netizens realized in responding to YouTube posts in a cyberpramatic perspective? The purpose of this study is to describe and explain the realization of the form of Indonesian netizen emotive language and the function of netizen emotive language in responding on YouTube posts. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The research data is in the form of netizens' verbal responses to internet-mediated YouTube posts as a field for cyberpragmatic studies. Data was collected using the Simak Bebas Libat Cakap (SBLC) technique. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive techniques using the interactive model Miles and Huberman (1992) with the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and verification/drawing conclusions. Based on the results of data analysis, it was concluded that the lingual form of emotive language is stated in utterances in declarative, interrogative, and directive modes, while the function of emotive language is stated in delarative speech acts with the function of stating, informing, confirming, giving advice, and praying; in expressive speech acts with functions of praising, expressing pleasure, expressing pride, thanking, apologizing, satirizing, mocking, and insulting; in imperative speech acts with functions of ordering, prohibiting, inviting, and asking. The conclusion of this study is that the lingual form of emotive language is realized in speech in declarative, interrogative, and directive modes.

Abstract

The development and issues within the Wattpad platform require research on the pseudo-reality in virtual communication between its readers and author. The pseudo-reality can help determine the communication type in the comments section: positive or negative. Therefore, this research can determine to what extent readers can accept the pseudo-reality that might occur during the interaction between them and the author. This research describes the pseudo-reality in the communication between the readers and author on the Wattpad platform by using the descriptive qualitative method based on a theory by Jean Baudrillard. The data source is the communication record between readers and author in BYBcool’s comments section of cyber fiction entitled Lost World, Zystrome: The Exordium Outsider, El Libro, dan Outsider by Rania Thahirah. Data collection is in the form of chat records between readers and authors that contain pseudo-reality. The steps taken in data collection include data selection, reading the data collection, documenting data collection, designing the research instrument, inserting data into the data capture table, and coding it. The data analysis step in this research comprises describing and interpreting data inductively, simultaneous data collection, and analyzing data using a particular content analysis technique before finally drawing a conclusion. The research result revealed the existence of pseudo-reality in the Wattpad comment section. The author’s responses were a manipulation attempt to create a good image, show concern over the readers and broad insight and incredible ideas, and get plenty of fans. Simultaneously, the author created pseudo-reality by choosing neutral words to avoid potential conflicts, responding to readers’ comments accordingly, and using appropriate emoticons and emojis with the most suitable expression. Good communication is essential for authors to build a close relationship with their readers.
