Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the realization of illocutionary acts in ChatGPT’s responses to students, focusing specifically on representative and directive illocutionary acts based on John R. Searle’s Speech Act Theory (1979). As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into educational contexts, understanding how AI performs communicative actions through language is essential from a pragmatic perspective. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method to analyze 256 ChatGPT utterances collected from written interactions with 20 English Literature students. The students were asked to engage in natural conversations with ChatGPT, while the analysis concentrated exclusively on ChatGPT’s responses as the primary data. The findings reveal that representative illocutionary acts are dominant, occurring in 150 utterances (58.37%), while directive illocutionary acts appear in 106 utterances (41.63%). Representative acts are primarily used to explain, define, and evaluate information, positioning ChatGPT as an informative and explanatory interlocutor. Directive acts function mainly to provide guidance, suggestions, and encouragement, supporting students’ decision-making and problem-solving processes. This distribution indicates that ChatGPT balances informational and instructional roles in academic interaction. The study concludes that ChatGPT demonstrates emerging pragmatic competence in educational settings through its effective use of representative and directive illocutionary acts. However, the findings are limited to a specific academic context and two illocutionary categories. Future research is encouraged to explore other types of speech acts and broader educational environments to further examine AI-mediated academic discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the narrative structure of the Batak Toba Opera Sipiso Somalim by applying Gustav Freytag's Pyramid, thereby addressing the scarcity of structural literary analysis on Indonesian traditional performing arts. Employing a descriptive qualitative method with a narrative analysis approach, this research deconstructs the opera's plot based on its documented script and performance recordings. The analysis systematically classifies narrative events into Freytag's five stages: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution, followed by an interpretive analysis of their cultural significance. The findings reveal that Sipiso Somalim adheres closely to the pyramidal structure. The exposition establishes the Batak Toba adat (customary law) and social order. The rising action intensifies through the protagonist's internal conflict between individual desire and communal obligations. The climax is marked by an irreversible decision that violates adat, leading to tragic consequences in the falling action. The resolution restores social equilibrium, albeit through loss, reinforcing collective moral values. This study confirms the cross-cultural applicability of Freytag's Pyramid, demonstrating that indigenous oral narratives possess sophisticated and systematic plot structures comparable to Western dramas. It provides a robust literary framework for analyzing traditional performances, thereby legitimizing Opera Batak as a valuable object of academic inquiry and contributing to the broader field of comparative narrative studies.

In vocabulary mastery, the Mean of students’ Pre-Test was 43.92, but then after implementing the English religious song lyric, the students’ score improved in Cycle-1 with the Mean was 66.56 and in Cycle-2 with the Mean was 90.04. In addition, it was found the data that 100% students passed the KKM in vocabulary mastery in Cycle-2. In listening skill, the Mean of students’ Pre-Test was 29.04, but then after implementing the English religious song lyric, the students’ score improved in Cycle-1 with the Mean was 58.24 and in Cycle-2 with the Mean was 76.56. In addition, it was found the data that only 67% students passed the KKM in listening skill in Cycle-2. Based on data, it can be concluded that the students’ vocabulary mastery was improved significantly by using English religious song lyric. Furthermore, the students’ improvement was not only shown by the Mean of students’ score but also by the students’ motivation or interest in studying which was increasing in Cycle-1 and Cycle-2. It can also be concluded that English religious song lyric is a good media (recommended) in teaching vocabulary mastery and listening skill. Abstract

Answering questions is considered more popular than asking questions. Socratic questioning is a method of learning by conversation or discussion where students are faced with some eccentric problems that create a series of questions. This research uses a qualitative descriptive design by collecting data from documents, observations and interviews. Then the data is analyzed using qualitative data analysis. Miles and Huberman show the theory about collecting data analysis which includes data collection, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. In Socratic Method develops the expansion of cognitive and analytical abilities, Socratic method could be an appropriate way to teach English. This method involves asking questions in a way that allows everyone to share ideas and also helps to create a positive environment for learning. Questioning where the types of questions most widely used by students are questions that explore information, reasons, evidence, and causes. Questions for clarification appeared. Questions about viewpoints and perspectives appear, followed by questions that explore assumptions, questions about questions and the least common question is questions about implications/consequences. As a way to train critical thinking skills, speaking and critical thinking skills are very important in the learning process that requires both skills and analytical process while students have lack of grammar and vocabulary, facts and evidence. How to make students enjoy learning speaking that would be a challenge for the writer when he taught at senior high school students' of Pondok Pesantren Modern Al-Fath. Another thing the result of the research: theoretically could become a new way in practicing speaking by using Socratic Method especially for critical thinking skills in English.
