Abstract

This study examines the role of language in beauty advertisements that promote fair skin as a beauty standard. It aims to identify the language functions used and to explain how these functions contribute to the construction of fair skin as an ideal of beauty. The problem of this study focuses on how language is used to influence and shape audience perceptions in advertising discourse. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data consist of 20 beauty advertisements collected from TikTok and YouTube, focusing on verbal elements such as slogans and persuasive expressions. The analysis is based on Roman Jakobson’s theory of language functions. The findings show that the conative function is the most dominant, followed by poetic and emotive functions. Overall, the study reveals that language in beauty advertisements plays a significant role in constructing and reinforcing fair skin as a beauty standard. Abstrak Penelitian ini mengkaji peran bahasa dalam iklan kecantikan yang mempromosikan kulit putih sebagai standar kecantikan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi fungsi-fungsi bahasa yang digunakan serta menjelaskan bagaimana fungsi-fungsi tersebut berkontribusi dalam pembentukan kulit putih sebagai ideal kecantikan. Permasalahan dalam penelitian ini berfokus pada bagaimana bahasa digunakan untuk memengaruhi dan membentuk persepsi audiens dalam wacana periklanan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian terdiri dari 20 iklan kecantikan yang dikumpulkan dari TikTok dan YouTube, dengan fokus pada unsur verbal seperti slogan dan ungkapan persuasif. Analisis didasarkan pada teori fungsi bahasa Roman Jakobson. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa fungsi konatif merupakan yang paling dominan, diikuti oleh fungsi puitik dan emotif. Secara keseluruhan, penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa bahasa dalam iklan kecantikan memainkan peran penting dalam membangun dan memperkuat kulit putih sebagai standar kecantikan.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the impact of using mind mapping techniques on students’ proficiency in comprehending analytical exposition texts at the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Hinai. The study applied Classroom Action Research involving two cycles consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The participants were students of class XI IPA-1. The data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, photographs, pre-test, and post-tests. The findings showed that the implementation of mind mapping significantly improved students’ reading comprehension. The mean score increased from 57.99 in the pre-test to 68.29 in post-test 1 and reached 80.31 in post-test 2. Besides improving students’ achievement, mind mapping also created a more active, motivated, and positive classroom atmosphere. Students became more enthusiastic in participating during the learning process and showed better understanding in identifying main ideas, implicit and explicit information, references, and word meanings in analytical exposition texts.

Abstract

This study addresses the limited integration of digital literacy in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, where instructional practices often emphasize language forms without fostering students’ ability to critically engage with digital content. Despite the growing importance of digital literacy, there is still a lack of structured learning models that systematically integrate digital competencies with English learning outcomes. Therefore, this study aims to develop and evaluate a Digital Literacy-Based English Learning Model (DL-EFL) for senior high school students. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) design using the ADDIE framework, consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The participants were 37 twelfth-grade students at Senior High School 1 Talawi. Data were collected through observations, interviews, questionnaires, and pretest posttest assessments. The data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative techniques, including validity, practicality, and effectiveness testing through Normalized Gain (N-Gain).The findings reveal that the existing integration of digital literacy in English learning was not optimal and lacked structured guidance. The developed DL-EFL model was validated as highly valid by experts and highly practical based on student responses. In terms of effectiveness, the model significantly improved students’ learning outcomes, as indicated by an average N-Gain score of 0.74 (high category).his study contributes to the field of digital pedagogy by providing a structured and empirically validated learning model that integrates digital literacy into EFL instruction. The model offers practical guidance for teachers to design interactive, student-centered, and technology-enhanced learning environments, thereby supporting both language proficiency and digital competence in the digital era.

Abstract

Translation plays an important role in English language learning, particularly at the high school level in Indonesia, where students are often tasked with translating descriptive and narrative texts. The purpose of this study is to analyze students' perspectives in translating descriptive and narrative texts from English to Indonesian at SMAN 1 Gebang. The research method used in this study is qualitative by using a questionnaire as a data collection tool to see students' perspectives in translating descriptive and narrative texts using a Likert scale to measure students' perspectives in translating. The location of the study was conducted at SMAN 1 Gebang using a sample of 20 students selected through random sampling. The findings showed that 50% of students often had difficulty in understanding vocabulary, maintaining the original meaning of the text, and reformulating sentences in Indonesian. Some 40% of students relied heavily on context and tools such as dictionaries or online translators due to lack of mastery of vocabulary and understanding of translation strategies. In addition, 40% of students experienced cultural and linguistic differences between English and Indonesian identified as the main factors affecting translation results.

Abstract

The text emphasizes the significance of enhancing writing skills among EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students through active learning and meaningful engagement, advocating for a student-centered approach that fosters idea development through discussion and writing. It highlights the challenges faced by Grade 11 EFL students at Singapore School Medan, particularly regarding grammar mastery and practice opportunities, revealing that while 62% of students exhibit good writing skills, a notable portion struggles due to limited engagement and reluctance to communicate in English. The study suggests utilizing news media and guided practice to boost motivation and creativity, ultimately calling for more effective teaching strategies to improve writing outcomes. The sample of this study is 15 students. The researchers used purposive sampling to achieve the aim of the study. To collect the Semi-structured interview is a form of Interview. The finding of this research showed that in the pre-test, the students got a mean score of 43,75. In cycle 1, the mean score is 48,6.  In cycle 2, the mean score is 60,5 or categorized as moderate. In the post-test, the mean score is 75,8 categorized as good. Topic writing skills in EFL students by providing one learning topic makes students active in constructing meaning, text, dialogue, and experience, in expressing their ideas clearly at SMA Singapore School Medan

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of applying TikTok application in vocabulary learning. This uses a quantitative study, which is a quasi-experimental method. Data from this study are collected and obtained through tests and observation. The subjects of this study are X-IPA with samples X-IPA 8 as the experimental group and X-IPA 5 as the control group, totaling 74 students who were selected by random technique. Tests are conducted by pre-test and post-test, then observation by observing and recording samples. The result of the study shows that using the TikTok application significantly affects students’ vocabulary mastery. This can be seen from some facts, such as 1) the Mean post-test of experimental after treatment is 83,03, while control is 58,92, 2) the Standard deviation post-test of experimental after treatment is 9036,97, while control is 2772,76, 3) T-count after treatment is 5,81, meanwhile t-table level 0,05 is 1,666. Thus 5,81 > 1,666). This study shows that TikTok applications have a good influence on vocabulary learning.

Abstract

Teachers are trained in senior high schools to increase their competence in designing and implementing CAR in the classes they teach. Seven students and eight teachers from SMAN 2 Panyabungan made up the training participants for this course. On the first day, CAR planning was stressed, and on the second day, CAR implementation was detailed. The community service was conducted by 8 lecturers of Universitas HKBP Nommensen Medan, on March 5-6, 2021. The results show that teachers' understanding of the CAR cycle had increased, however they required additional training to improve their ability to collect data and do data analysis techniques.

Abstract

This research aims to identify various types of language styles and try to find the most dominant use of language styles in the political debates of the 2024 Indonesian presidential candidates using a sociolinguistic approach. This study uses a qualitative method. To obtain data, the author used a note-taking technique, namely taking notes. Because the data was in the form of words, it was analyzed by identifying, analyzing, and categorizing the data and noting the frequency of the most dominant types of language styles. Researchers also used Martin Joos's theory of language style types; five different language styles were studied. Frozen style is one of them, as are formal style, consultation style, casual style, and intimate style. The results of the research show that the types of language styles in political debates have a frozen style of 1 data, a formal style of 3 data, a consultative style of 35 data, then a casual style of 12 data, and finally the intimate style has 0 data. Based on the analysis, the author found that there are four language styles: frozen, formal, consultative, and relaxed. Then, the consultative style is the most widely used style, with 35 data points out of a total of 51 data points.

Abstract

This research focuses on a semiotic analysis of the logo and directional signs at the PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Medan Station. Utilizing Peirce's theory, this study identifies nine semiotic sign elements emerging from the analysis, with symbols dominating as the most frequently occurring element. The logo of PT KAI Medan, characterized by the use of dark blue color and a line crossing the letter "A," symbolically represents stability, professionalism, and reliability of the company, while directional signs within the company's environment are strategically positioned to provide clear information to station users. This research provides a profound understanding of the use of semiotic signs in assisting station users' navigation and offers a foundation for further research on the effectiveness of semiotic sign usage in the context of public transportation and its impact on user experience.
