Abstract

Background: Globally, the incidence of stunting in children under five has declined over the past few decades. However, there are regional and in-country disparities. In Indonesia, the prevalence of stunting increased from 25.7% to 30.8% between 2013 and 2018. This upward trend is associated with negative consequences such as reduced academic potential, increased risk of noncommunicable diseases, increased healthcare costs, and reduced productivity. Maternal nutrition literacy is a contributing factor to stunting. Therefore, strengthening maternal nutrition literacy can help reduce stunting. Objectives: This study aims to examine the relationship between maternal nutrition literacy and maternal nutrition knowledge with the incidence of stunting in children under five. Methods: The literature search was conducted using databases, namely PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect, and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Study Design (PICOS) frameworks. Discussion: Only 13 out of 630 articles were eligible. Among them, four articles showed a significant correlation between nutrition knowledge and literacy with the incidence of stunting in lower-middle-income countries. In upper-middle-income countries, seven articles showed a significant correlation between nutrition literacy and knowledge with the incidence of stunting. Conclusions: There is a significant relationship between nutrition literacy and nutritional knowledge with the incidence of stunting. Nutrition literacy and knowledge can be related to infant and young child feeding, selection and preparation of nutritional and healthy foods, child growth and development, stunting prevention, access to health services, food security, and traditional food nutrition knowledge.

Abstract

Background: Breastmilk from a healthy and well-nourished mother serves as the optimal source of nutrition for infant growth and development. The composition of breastmilk is affected by maternal dietary patterns. Beyond its nutritional value, breastfeeding fosters emotional bonding between the mother and infant. Objectives: This study aims to explore the role of maternal nutrition in breastfeeding success and infant’s well-being through scientific and philosophical lenses. Methods: Literature search was conducted via PubMed (Medline Database), including systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and original research articles published within the last decade (2014-2024). The following keywords were utilised: ("maternal nutrition" OR "maternal health" OR "breastfeeding practice" OR "breastmilk") AND ("neurodevelopment" OR "intellectual development" OR "child development"). Inclusion criteria comprised open-access articles, while studies were available only in abstract form were excluded. Discussions: Breastmilk production requires an adequate intake of macronutrients, including protein, carbohydrates, and fats; thus, maternal dietary intake significantly affects breastmilk composition. The nutritional and bioactive components in breastmilk support the infant’s immune function, neurodevelopment, and physical growth, while simultaneously  providing necessary energy for the lactating mother. Breastfeeding should be understood as a holistic practice that extends beyond nutrient transfer, necessitating multisectoral collaboration involving government, non-governmental organizations, healthcare providers, and the population at large. Conclusions: Maternal well-being is intrinsically linked to child health, as well-nourished mothers provide a vital foundation for optimal infant development. A compassionate, community-based approach to maternal nutrition is an essential view that respects individual choices while emphasizing the importance of collective support to enhance the health and well-being of both mother and child.

Abstract

Purpose – This article aims to examine the factors that influence and inhibit a math mindset and how to develop it. Some people still believe in several myths that mathematical intelligence is innate and only suitable for men. This myth not only fosters math anxiety but also hinders the growth of students' mindsets and the achievement of students’ academic goals.Methodology – The method employed is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) adhering to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. After carrying out a search process using Publish or Perish for articles indexed by Scopus, 72 articles were obtained as the final result of several selection stages. These articles were reviewed one by one, allowing us to answer the Research Question (RQ) of this study.Findings – The results indicate that two factors contribute to a math mindset, namely internal and external. Meanwhile, factors inhibiting a math mindset include math anxiety, family, and educators, as well as several other factors. Family and educators play important roles in debunking myths and fostering a growth mindset in math.Contribution – The results of this study contribute to the efforts of the government, teachers, and parents in promoting the development of the mathematical mindset in children and students. By understanding that mathematical intelligence can be mastered by everyone without exception, the government, teachers, and parents can jointly implement a curriculum that emphasizes the importance of the learning process rather than the results.

Abstract

Postpartum blues is a common emotional condition affecting mothers after childbirth, with a global prevalence of approximately 39.0%. This condition arises from an interplay of biological, psychological, and social influences, including hormonal fluctuations and psychosocial stressors such as role transition and sleep deprivation. Consistent emotional and practical support from partners and family members helps buffer these stressors. This systematic review aimed to explore the specific role of husbands in preventing postpartum blues by examining various forms of their involvement during pregnancy, labor, breastfeeding, and postpartum care. Following PRISMA guidelines, relevant English-language studies published between 2019 and 2024 were systematically identified from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. After independent screening of 3,073 initial records by two reviewers and subsequent exclusions, 11 new studies were included for synthesis. The findings highlight that husband involvement in prenatal care significantly reduces the incidence of postpartum blues , and participation in digital mental health interventions enhances emotional support for women experiencing postpartum depression. Perceived husband support consistently correlates with improved emotional well-being and quality of life, extending beyond immediate emotional assistance to impact overall maternal QoL. Other factors like maternal age, education, parity, and broader family support also influence postpartum blues symptoms. This review underscores that active and consistent husband involvement is crucial for mitigating postpartum emotional challenges and improving maternal well-being, advocating for its integration into maternal health programs.

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between digital media consumption, peer influence, tobacco advertising exposure, and anxiety levels among adolescents in Jakarta, Indonesia. Using a mixed methods approach, data were collected from 1,278 junior and senior high school students through multi-stage cluster sampling surveys and focus group discussions. Quantitative results showed that 72.8% of respondents experienced anxiety, social media usage (p = 0.000), social media use at late night (OR = 2.153; 95% CI: 1.643–2.822; p = 0.000), and peer influence (OR = 2.434; 95% CI: 1.772–3.342; p = 0.000) were significantly associated with anxiety. Peer influence was identified as the strongest predictor of anxiety, nearly doubling the likelihood of experiencing anxiety. Exposure to tobacco advertising on social media showed no statistically significant association with anxiety (p = 0.162). Qualitative findings highlighted the role of peer relationships in providing emotional support and influencing smoking behaviors as coping mechanisms for anxiety. These findings emphasize the need to address social dynamics and digital media habits in adolescent mental health interventions. Policymakers and educators should prioritize strategies promoting moderated social media use and supportive peer environments to mitigate anxiety in youth within Indonesia’s evolving digital landscape.

Abstract

The interaction of micronutrients and macronutrients has been shown to have a significant impact on children's cognitive development. Furthermore, proper nutrition helps a child's immune system avoid infection and disease, which can impair nutrient absorption and lead to deficiency. Microbiotas in the gut play critical roles in body physiology, including nutrient absorption, infection resistance and immune system development. Furthermore, it is known that the gut microbiota influences immune cell maturation. Finally, these three factors are thought to influence neurogenesis and cognitive development. A virtual meeting was held with five invited experts to gain a better understanding of the relationship between nutritional factors, the immune system and cognitive development.

Abstract

Perinatal mental health (PMH) disorders affect 15.6–37% of postpartum women, yet midwives report low confidence in detection and management due to inadequate training and protocols. This study evaluated midwives' readiness to handle postpartum PMH disorders in community health centers. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was used in eight Mataram City health centers (December 2023–January 2024). Quantitatively, 102 purposively sampled midwives completed validated questionnaires on sociodemographics, screening practices, and PMH handling, analyzed via chi-square tests. Qualitatively, thematic analysis of in-depth interviews with six informants (managers, midwives, and mental health nurses) explored referral experiences using N-Vivo. Most midwives (86.27%) did not handle PMH appropriately. The implementation of PMH data assessment (37.25%), screening (37.26%), and classification (22.56%) was low. Handling PMH significance association with screening (p=0.001, OR 14.31), classification (p=0.001, OR 23.22), and data assessment (p=0.009, OR 9.43). Age, education, experience, and training were not associated. Themes emphasized referral collaboration with family consent, consultation with mental health nurses/doctors, and hospitalization for the most serious cases. Midwives are not yet sufficiently prepared to address the perinatal mental health (PMH) needs of postnatal women. Poor screening uptake is a consequence of the absence of protocols and time limitations, and this highlights requirements for training and standardized pathways. Referral dependence is compensatory but inconsistent, mirroring global appeals for inter-professional approaches. Targeted PMH training and referral protocols are crucial in order to assist the development of midwives' skills to provide prompt care and reduce maternal-infant risk. Interventions should be tested in longitudinal studies across a variety of Indonesian contexts.

Abstract

Anemia is a common nutritional issue among vulnerable populations, including toddlers, adolescents, women of reproductive age, and pregnant women. Anemia in pregnant women impacts both the mother and fetus. For the mother, it reduces quality of life and can lead to mortality. Babies born to anemic mothers are at risk of congenital abnormalities, stillbirth, and stunting. Maternal health issues during pregnancy affect the critical first 1000 days of a child's life, with permanent consequences for survival, necessitating appropriate interventions to minimize these risks. The 2023 SKI Report indicates a 27.7% prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in Indonesia, classified as a moderate public health issue. This study is a quantitative study using a cross-sectional design aimed to identify factors associated with anemia in pregnant women in Indonesia in 2023, utilizing secondary data from the 2023 SKI. The dependent variable was anemia, with independent variables from socio-demographic factors, lifestyle factors, dietary patterns, and pregnancy-related factors. Data analysis used complex samples, including univariate and bivariate analyses with chi-square tests. The study found significant associations between anemia in pregnant women and consumption of meat, poultry, and their processed products (p-value = 0.047), pregnancy interval (p-value = 0.033), and consumption of supplementary feeding (PMT) (p-value = 0.001) in Indonesia in 2023.
