Abstract

Essential oil extracted from nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) contains various beneficial compounds that can be used in medicines and cosmetics. Nevertheless, nutmeg essential oil (NEO) use in pharmaceuticals is limited by its high lipophilicity and tendency to degrade. Encapsulating NEO into a nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) can be an alternative to overcome these problems. Thus, this study aimed to develop an NEO formula in an NLC system (NEO-NLC) for topical use, to characterize NEO-NLC, and to elucidate its potential as an antioxidant. The optimization of the NEO-NLC formula included selecting liquid lipid components, adjusting their ratios, choosing a sonicator, selecting a surfactant system, and optimizing sonication amplitude. The optimum NEO-NLC formula was then characterized by determining particle size and distribution, measuring zeta potential, estimating encapsulation efficiency, and evaluating antioxidant activity. The optimum NEO-NLC formula was obtained with a composition of 1.8% cetyl alcohol, 3.0% almond oil, 1.2% NEO, 3.2% Tween 80, 0.8% Plantacare® 1200, and demineralized water. The resulting NEO-NLC exhibited a particle size of 124.4 ± 4.7 nm, a polydispersity index of 0.35 ± 0.05, a zeta potential of -39.0 ± 3.6 mV, and an encapsulation efficiency of 95.3 ± 0.6%. Encapsulation of NEO into an NLC system resulted in a 2.9-fold increase in antioxidant activity compared to unencapsulated NEO. The developed NEO-NLC showed potential for pharmaceutical or cosmetic raw material use.

Abstract

In the digital era, teenagers now communicate more often through online platforms. One of the current growing phenomena is the use of emojis. Emojis act as nonverbal elements that can influence various aspects of the communication process. Emojis can affect the intonation and clarity of meaning of the message to be conveyed, without elements of sound or facial expressions, written messages are often ambiguous or even misperceived. Emojis are effective in reducing communication confusion by providing additional visual cues about the sender's intentions and emotions. This study aims to understand the phenomenon of emojis used in online conversations in depth and their impact on differences in perception among teenagers. This study utilized a qualitative research design with a case study approach among teenagers. The study's results showed a significant influence on differences in perception and perspective in the use of emojis among teenagers. So, it is important to understand the context and meaning of emojis to reduce the risk of misunderstandings and differences in perception in online communication in this digital era. Through a better understanding of the use of emojis, it is hoped that a more effective and harmonious communication environment can be created.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: Implementation of Verified Containers Carried on Ships (Verified Gross Mass of Container) – VGM at Belawan Container Terminal (Research Team Supriadi and Christy Pongkessu). In an effort to improve shipping safety and minimize the risk of damage or accidents at sea due to load imbalance and overloading on ships, in May 2014 the International Maritime Organization - The Maritime Safety Committee (IMOMSC) has decided to approve changes to The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) 1974 Chapter VI Article 2 concerning the requirements for verifying the gross weight of containers (Verified Gross Mass of Container/ VGM). Verified Gross Mass (VGM) is validated container weight information using scales that have been certified and accounted for by a verifier. This study aims to determine the implementation and impact of the implementation of Verified Gross Mass (VGM) at Belawan Port. This research was conducted at Belawan Port located in Medan City, North Sumatra, Indonesia for 6 (six) months, namely from May to October 2023. The type of research used is qualitative research. Qualitative research methods are research methods based on the philosophy of postpositivism, data collection techniques with triangulation (combined), inductive/qualitative data analysis. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that Belawan Port has implemented the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) procedure in accordance with SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations. This process involves verifying the gross weight of containers before loading onto ships using appropriate weighing equipment. The main impact of implementing Verified Gross Mass (VGM) is increasing the safety of container ship navigation. By ensuring the correct gross weight of containers, ports can prevent ship accidents caused by gross weight inaccuracies. Keywords: Shipping Safety, Containers, Verified Gross Mass

Abstract

Introduction: Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer's disease, progressively affecting both motor and non-motor systems in patients. In addition to the commonly recognized motor symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia, non-motor symptoms such as chronic pain are often underdiagnosed. Pain in Parkinson's patients can manifest in various forms, including musculoskeletal pain, neuropathic pain, and dystonic pain. While pain is not a primary symptom defining Parkinson's, its impact on patients' quality of life is profound, contributing to reduced mobility, sleep disturbances, increased risk of falls, and poor mental health, including depression and anxiety. This study aimed to explore the relationship between the severity of Parkinson's disease, pain levels, and quality of life in Parkinson's patients. Method: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted at the Neurology Clinic of RSUD Dr. Saiful Anwar in East Java from October 2023 to March 2024, using purposive sampling techniques. We assessed Parkinson's severity (Hoehn & Yahr scale), pain levels (Numeric Rating Scale), and quality of life (Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-39 (PDQ-39) Indonesian Version). Result: The study found that PDQ-39 INA scores were significantly associated with Parkinson's disease severity (n = 11, p = 0.012), indicating a significant impact of disease severity on quality of life. However, no significant relationship was found between PDQ-39 scores and pain levels (p = 0.117). Pearson correlation analysis showed no significant relationship between Parkinson's severity scale and pain level (r = 0.461, p = 0.154). Specifically, Parkinson's severity significantly affected PDQ-39 scores (p = 0.001), while pain levels did not have a significant effect (p = 0.399). Conclusion: This study reveals that while pain is a critical issue, it is the severity of Parkinson's disease that has a more substantial impact on patients' quality of life.
