Abstract

Modern agriculture faces challenges in the form of dependence on chemical fertilizers and increasing organic waste that has not been optimally utilized. This activity aims to develop innovation in processing organic waste into liquid organic fertilizer (POC) as part of a sustainable agricultural system in Beong Village, Siau Tagulandang Biaro Islands Regency (SITARO). The implementation method used a Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) approach and the application of appropriate technology through training, manufacturing, and POC application tests. The main ingredients consisted of chicken manure, nutmeg leaves, and vegetable waste fermented using EM4 bioactivator for 24 days in two fermentation stages, namely anaerobic and aerobic. The analysis showed that the POC contained 1.14% N, 0.01% P, 0.38% K, pH 6.8, and a C/N ratio of 14.5 in accordance with SNI 19-7030-2004. The application of POC increased the growth of mustard plants by 35% and tomatoes by 32%, and reduced the use of chemical fertilizers by 55%. This innovation reduced the volume of organic waste by 60% and increased farmer group productivity by 70%. The novelty of this activity lies in the integration of local agricultural waste management into economically valuable liquid fertilizer that supports circular economy and low-emission agriculture.

Abstract

Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) are a group of Gram-positive, cocci or rod-shaped microorganisms characterized by their catalase-negative phenotype. These bacteria are known to produce various antibacterial compounds, including organic acids, hydrogen peroxide, carbon dioxide, and bacteriocins, which exhibit bacteriostatic or bactericidal properties against pathogenic bacteria. The aim of this study is to isolate LAB that produce antibacterial compounds during the fermentation of Pakoba fruit (Syzygium luzonense) into sweets, with a focus on inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. This research employs a quantitative descriptive method, involving the isolation of LAB from candied Pakoba fruit samples and subsequent testing of their antibacterial activity against the aforementioned pathogens. The barrier zone formed around the wells is then measured. The data from the study showed that BAL isolation from Pakoba fruit candied was obtained from as many as 10 isolates, and antibacterial activity tests showed that 10 BAL isolates produced antibacterial compounds with inhibitory diameters of 7.6 – 15.3 mm. The isolates with the greatest antibacterial activity are  LAB isolate MP(1)5.2  for E. coli and LAB isolate MP(3)6.3 isolates for S. aureus. Based on the results of identification using the profile matching method, it was shown that the selected LAB isolates, namely MP(1)5.2 and MP(3)6.3, were classified in the genus Lactobacillus with the characteristics of stem cell shape, single cell arrangement, catalase-negative, non-motile, did not form spots, and did not produce gas from glucose.

Abstract

Aquaponics is a cultivation method that integrates freshwater fish farming with hydroponics or soil-less plant cultivation, where wastewater from fish ponds is used as a source of nutrients for plants. This aquaponics system not only produces fish and fresh vegetables, but also reduces waste and water usage, making aquaponics an ideal solution for cultivation in small urban areas. This study aims to analyze and compare the growth productivity of pakcoy (Brassica rapa L.) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) in an aquaponics system. This study was conducted at the Lotta Agricultural Center (SAL), Pineleng District, Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi, from October to December 2024. The research method used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two groups, namely pakcoy and lettuce plants, each with 57 replicates. The data collected included plant height, leaf width, number of leaves, biomass, and leaf chlorophyll content. The results showed that the aquaponics system had a significant effect on the growth of both types of plants. Pakcoy showed faster growth and higher productivity than lettuce, with significant differences in plant height (F = 223.160, Sig. = .000), leaf width (F =121.793, Sig. = .000), number of leaves (F = 734.323, Sig. = .000), and total biomass. Chlorophyll content in pakcoy was also higher than in lettuce, indicating greater photosynthetic capacity. The aquaponics system effectively supports the growth of pakcoy and lettuce, with pakcoy showing a better response. Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance has accelerated the search for alternative antibacterial agents derived from natural products. Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is an invasive aquatic weed that is abundant in Indonesian waters, yet rich in secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, and saponins with antibacterial potential. This study aimed to evaluate the inhibitory activity of the ethanol extract of water hyacinth leaves against Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Propionibacterium acnes (Gram-positive). A descriptive-exploratory laboratory design was used. Leaf samples collected from Lake Tondano were extracted by maceration in 96% ethanol and concentrated using a rotary evaporator. Antibacterial activity was assessed by the well-diffusion method at 100% extract concentration, with 30% amoxicillin as the comparator, incubated at 37°C for 24 hours. The extract produced mean inhibition zones of 7.0 mm against E. coli and 5.7 mm against P. acnes, both classified as moderate according to the Davis & Stout scheme, whereas amoxicillin produced zones of 8 mm and 7 mm. The ability of the extract to inhibit both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria indicates a broad spectrum of activity. These findings confirm that water hyacinth leaves are a promising source of natural antibacterials while adding value to aquatic weed management.
