Abstract

This study aims to explore the effect of self-assessment on grammar teaching and learning, by analyzing how students identify and correct errors related to the use of simple past tense in their own work. A quantitative approach was used in this study by using a quasi-experimental design. The sample was selected using purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through a test, which was divided into two: pre-test and post-test. The population in this study was the ninth grade of MTs Muhammadiyah Al-Haq Palu, where class IX C was the experimental group (n=21) and class IX B was the control group (n=18). Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test due to the study data was not normally distributed. The results demonstrated that there was an increase in learning outcomes in the use of simple past tense in the experimental group, compared to the control group. It was shown by calculations using the SPSS 24 software system where the Sig (2-tailed) value = 0.000 < 0.05, which means that the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. In summary, this study indicated that self-assessment has a significant impact on enhancing students’ ability in simple past tense. The findings offer a new perspective for students, teachers and future researchers in enhancing English language teaching and learning.

Abstract

Grammar proficiency is vital for effective writing in English, particularly concerning the simple present tense in descriptive texts. While numerous studies have documented common grammatical errors, a gap exists in understanding the specific errors made by students at SMKN 5 Palu. This research aimed to identify and classify the types of errors made by tenth-grade students in their use of the simple present tense in descriptive texts and to determine the most prevalent error types. Employing a quantitative descriptive approach and Dulay's Surface Strategy Taxonomy, data were collected from 15 students through their written texts. The findings indicated that omission errors were the most frequent, accounting for 57.97% of total errors, followed by missordering errors at 8.70%. These results highlight significant challenges with subject-verb agreement and the correct application of auxiliary verbs. The study concludes that enhancing grammar instruction and incorporating error analysis can substantially improve students' writing proficiency. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions in grammar education to address specific error patterns and enhance overall writing skills.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the Snowball Throwing technique in improving the speaking skills of junior high school students. Speaking is considered a crucial aspect of English language learning, requiring students to communicate ideas clearly and confidently. Traditional methods often fail to stimulate active participation, prompting the need for more engaging approaches. The Snowball Throwing technique offers an interactive alternative that involves students writing questions on pieces of paper, crumpling them into balls, and throwing them to classmates who answer them verbally. This activity fosters spontaneous speech, peer interaction, and critical thinking. A quasi-experimental design was used with two classes: an experimental group taught using the Snowball Throwing technique and a control group taught using conventional methods. Before the treatment, the average score of the experimental group was 62.4 and the control group was 62.2. After the application of Snowball Throwing Technique, the experimental group’s post-test score increased to 82.6, while the control group only reached 68.5. The Mann-Whitney U test results showed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), which means there is a significant difference between the two groups. This technique proved to be effective in improving speaking skills, especially in the aspects of fluency, accuracy, and comprehensibility. In addition, this technique also increased students’ confidence and active participation, in line with Vygotsky’s theory that social interaction in cooperative learning accelerates language acquisition.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the Jigsaw technique in improving reading comprehension among eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 16 Palu. Reading comprehension is essential for academic success, yet many students struggle due to low motivation, limited vocabulary, and anxiety when reading English texts. To address these issues, a quasi-experimental design was used involving an experimental group taught with the Jigsaw technique and a control group taught using conventional methods. Both groups completed pre-tests and post-tests to assess their reading comprehension before and after the intervention. The results showed a significant improvement in the experimental group’s reading comprehension scores compared to the control group. The mean post-test score for the experimental group was 82.47, while the control group scored 61.10, indicating a notable positive impact of the Jigsaw technique. Statistical analysis confirmed this difference was significant at the 0.05 level. The Jigsaw technique fostered cooperative learning by increasing student engagement and encouraging active participation. Group discussions allowed students to share interpretations and collaboratively analyze texts, which enhanced their ability to identify main ideas, supporting details, and text structures. Additionally, role division and repeated group interactions improved information recall and retention. In conclusion, the Jigsaw technique is an effective instructional strategy for enhancing students’ reading comprehension, especially at the literal level. These findings support incorporating cooperative learning methods in English teaching to help students overcome common reading comprehension difficulties.
