Abstract

This thesis analyzes the narrative structure of Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 adaptation of The Great Gatsby using A.J. Greimas’ actantial model. The study aims to explore how the roles of actants influence the story’s progression and themes, and how the narrative structure shapes character relationships within the film. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research identifies and categorizes the six actants—Subject, Object, Sender, Receiver, Helper, and Opponent—within the movie’s plot. The analysis reveals that Jay Gatsby functions as the Subject in pursuit of Daisy Buchanan, the Object, with the supporting characters embodying various actantial roles that shape the film’s development. The study also applies Greimas’ canonical narrative schema to examine the narrative progression through stages of Manipulation, Competence, Performance, and Sanction. Findings show that the movie’s narrative structure not only follows a classical storytelling model but also reflects deeper socio-cultural themes such as the illusion of the American Dream, class struggle, and identity. Through this approach, the research highlights how structuralist narrative theory enhances the understanding of character dynamics and thematic complexity in cinematic adaptations of literary works.

This article is the result of the community service activity of a team of lecturers and students of Universitas Muslim Nusantara Al-Washliyah from the English literature study program. The purpose of this community service is to share knowledge of the use of linguistic landscape as a medium for English language. Landscape linguistics is a study of language use in public spaces. The program was designed to enhance students’ exposure to English through the strategic use of signs, posters, labels, and educational displays placed in the school environment. The implementation of this program demonstrated that the linguistic landscape could function as an effective, low-cost, and sustainable learning medium. Students showed increased interest and familiarity with English vocabulary and expressions encountered in their daily school activities. Furthermore, the program proved that English language learning can be harmoniously integrated into a religious-based educational setting without disrupting the school’s focus on Qur'an memorization. Through this activity, it is hoped that it will increase the knowledge and insight of the participant.

Abstract

This study analyzes the morphemic features found in five selected poems by Charlotte Brontë, namely Life, Stanzas, Parting, On the Death of Anne Brontë, and Regret. The study aims to determine how Brontë’s morphological structures contribute to meaning, rhythm, and stylistic character in her poetry. The analysis focuses on identifying free morphemes, bound morphemes, inflectional affixes, derivational affixes, and other word-formation processes. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method using textual documentation and morphemic analysis. The findings, based on an analysis of 1229 total morphemes across the five poems, reveal that all poems are dominated by emotional free morphemes and inflectional bound morphemes (-ing, -ed, -s). Thus, it is concluded that morphological structures play a significant role in shaping the aesthetic effect in Brontë’s poetic works, specifically by combining simple structural forms with expressive word formation.

Abstract

This study investigates the forms of verbal humor produced by elementary school students at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Swasta (MIS) Syababul Qorib Perbaungan, Indonesia. Data were collected through participatory observation, interviews, and audio-visual documentation of students’ verbal interaction during formal learning activities and informal peer communication. The analysis was conducted by examining humorous utterances through the six Knowledge Resources of GTVH: Script Opposition, Logical Mechanism, Situation, Target, Narrative Strategy, and Language. The findings reveal that students consistently produce structured forms of verbal humor, including riddle-based humor, metaphorical humor related to learning content, light peer-directed teasing, situational humor, and media-influenced digital humor. These forms emerged from recurring configurations of script opposition and logical mechanisms adapted to age-appropriate language and classroom contexts. This study contributes to applied linguistic research on child humor and extends the application of GTVH to naturally occurring discourse in Indonesian Islamic elementary school settings.
