Abstract

The process of learning science is inseparable from the nature of science, which includes knowledge about methods (epistemology), the process of science formation (ontology), and the values  and  beliefs  supporting  the  development of  science  (axiology). This  study  aims  to examine and explain Lavoisier’s law of conservation of mass (Lavoisier Law) through the lenses of epistemology, ontology, and axiology. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with document analysis involving the collection, analysis, and interpretation of non-numerical data from various articles published in both national and international journals. The results of this study reveal that the ontological analysis of Lavoisier’s law of conservation of mass can be observed through Lavoisier's experimental facts. The epistemological analysis of Lavoisier’s law explains how Antoine Lavoisier discovered the law and how its validity can be assessed. The axiological analysis of Lavoisier’s law is understood as a study of how the law is applied or utilized and its connection to moral and ethical considerations. The concept of Lavoisier’s law of conservation of mass can be taught using a real-world applications inquiry approach, involving activities such as conducting chemical reaction simulations, product design projects, and real- world case analyses. The real-world applications level can help students improve their skills in data collection and interpretation based on experiments, making predictions, and constructing logical arguments based on scientific evidence, as well as making and justifying decisions based on the obtained evidence

Abstract

Environmental literacy is crucial in preparing individuals to face global challenges related to environmental issues such as climate change and pollution. This study aims to explore the behavioral dimension of students' environmental literacy and analyze the relevance of integrating humanistic values to strengthen it. The research employed a descriptive approach involving 55 students from the Chemistry Education Program at a state university in Aceh Province. Data were collected through a questionnaire measuring three behavioral indicators: involvement in responsible environmental behavior, environmental action strategies and skills, and intention to act. The results showed that students had a good level of engagement in environmental behaviors, although there were challenges in adopting certain habits, such as reducing single-use plastic. Furthermore, students demonstrated a strong intention to engage in pro-environmental actions, particularly in changing harmful behaviors and participating in sustainability activities. This study concludes that humanistic-based education can strengthen students' environmental literacy by emphasizing the importance of reflection, moral responsibility, and experience-based learning in creating agents of change for environmental sustainability.

Abstract

This study evaluates the alignment of the curriculum with national policies and global environmental challenges, assesses the availability of resources and teaching strategies, and measures students' learning outcomes in cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions. Using a mixed-methods approach within the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, and Product) evaluation model, the study involved the program chair, two-course instructors, and 26 students from a public university in Aceh. Research instruments included questionnaires, observation sheets, interview guides, and test items. The findings indicate that the curriculum is relevant to global issues and supports the development of students' critical thinking skills. However, limited laboratory facilities, insufficient funding, and a lack of support for environment-based projects pose significant challenges to optimal curriculum implementation. Additionally, the program effectively enhances students' understanding of global environmental issues and their relevance to the SDGs but requires stronger integration of practical applications and explicit connections to SDG targets. Recommendations include project-based learning innovations, cross-sector collaborations, and improvements in facilities and funding to holistically enhance students' environmental literacy and prepare them as sustainability change agents.
