Abstract

Cocoa pod sucking (Helopeltis spp.) is one of the pests that causes a productivity decrease of cocoa pod in Indonesia. In terms of control, many farmers in Indonesia are still using synthetic insecticides that are not environmentally friendly, so intoxicating yam (Dioscorea hispida Dennts) and tropical whiteweed (Ageratum conyzoides L.) are used as botanical insecticide that are environmentally friendly. The objective of this research is to determine the effect of botanical insecticide that made of intoxicating yam extract, tropical whiteweed extract, and mixed extract of intoxicating yam and tropical whiteweed on the mortality of cocoa pod sucking pests. This research was carried out from November 2020 to February 2021, at the Plant Laboratory II Estate Crop Department, Politeknik Negeri Lampung. The research used a Randomized Block Design (RBD) consisting of four treatments, namely: P0 (control), P1 (intoxicating yam extract), P2 (tropical whiteweed extract), and P3 (combination of both extracts), which were repeated six times. The highest mortality of cocoa pod sucking pests was found in treatment P1 (72.73%). The mortality of cocoa pod sucking pest was caused by extract of intoxicating yam which contains the active ingredients of saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, and cyanide which enter the digestive system of the cocoa pod sucking pest as stomach poisons, resulting in the death of the cocoa pod sucking pest. Based on the results of the research, it was concluded that intoxicating yam extract is the most potential as botanical insectiside for cocoa pod sucking pest.

Abstract

The 21st century is marked by globalization and rapid technological development, making critical thinking an essential skill. Incorporating biology into education is seen as a way to strengthen these abilities. However, many students still struggle with thinking critically, especially regarding environmental issues. This study assessed the critical thinking skills of 10th-grade students at SMA Negeri 4 Tanjungpinang during the 2023/2024 academic year. Using a descriptive approach, researchers evaluated 31 students through essay-based tests without altering any conditions. The analysis revealed that students' critical thinking was generally weak, particularly in areas such as giving basic explanations, reasoning, drawing conclusions, and providing deeper clarification. Nonetheless, they showed stronger performance in applying strategies and tactics. These findings highlight the need for teaching methods like problem-based learning to foster better critical thinking in students.

Abstract

Global warming poses serious threats to marine and coastal environments, especially in island and shoreline communities like Kijang Kota in the Riau Islands, Indonesia. Despite the urgency of this issue, research on how students in such vulnerable areas understand and respond to global warming remains limited. This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and environmental behaviors of junior high school students in Kijang Kota regarding global warming and its effects on the marine and coastal environment. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, data were collected through tests and questionnaires from a sample of 304 students, selected through stratified random sampling. The findings reveal that students’ knowledge was generally low, with an average score placing them in the "poor" category. However, their attitudes toward environmental issues were "very good," reflecting high awareness and concern. In terms of environmental behavior, most students were in the "good" category, showing moderate engagement in eco-friendly actions. The results highlight a gap between students’ strong environmental concern and their limited understanding and actions, pointing to the need for more practical, context-based environmental education in coastal schools. This research offers insights that can help improve climate education and promote more sustainable behavior in island and coastal communities.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the level of scientific literacy skills and self-efficacy of junior high school students in science learning. This research was conducted through the administration of a scientific literacy test and a self-efficacy questionnaire. The research instrument consisted of a scientific literacy test in the form of essay questions that measured three indicators of scientific competence, and a self-efficacy questionnaire adapted from Bandura with indicators of magnitude, strength, and generality. The results showed that students' scientific literacy level was in the very low category, with the majority of students (81.1%) only reaching the nominal literacy level. It indicates that although students can recognize basic concepts in science, they still have difficulty explaining scientific phenomena and using scientific evidence logically. Meanwhile, students' self-efficacy level is generally in the moderate category, although it is still relatively low in some indicators, such as generality. The correlation test shows a significance value of 0.305 > 0.05 with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.098, which means there is no significant relationship between scientific literacy skills and self-efficacy. The coefficient of determination of 0.0096 indicates that the contribution of scientific literacy to self-efficacy is only 0.96%, while other factors influence the other 99.04%. The analysis showed no significant relationship between students’ scientific literacy skills and self-efficacy, as scientific literacy contributed only minimally and was largely influenced by other factors.
