Abstract

In martial arts sports such as pencak silat, physical, technical and mental abilities are required, but often the mentality of athletes is not considered very important by coaches. Pencak silat athletes are often faced with the pressures of competition, failure and stress that affect emotional stability. Growth mindset is believed to influence the way athletes deal with these challenges. This mindset encourages individuals to believe that abilities can be developed through effort and learning so that they have a positive impact on emotional management. The research method used is quantitative with a correlational approach. The instruments used in the study were a growth mindset scale and an emotion management scale given once to the sample. After the data was obtained, data analysis was carried out using the SPSS Version 26 correlation test. The results of this study indicate that there is a significant relationship between growth mindset and the level of self-confidence in pencak silat athletes. Athletes who have a higher growth mindset tend to have better self-confidence in facing challenges and pressures when competing. This is in line with previous findings which state that structured pencak silat training not only improves physical skills, but also strengthens mental and emotional aspects, and can increase athlete confidence. This study concludes that growth mindset and emotional management of Pencak Silat athletes in the preparation stage have a relationship between each other, where growth mindset affects the level of emotional management of Pencak Silat athletes. The findings confirm that psychological aspects, particularly growth mindset, play an important role in managing anxiety and supporting athletes’ performance in the training or competition arena.

Abstract

Not a few athletes experience stress during training or competing, which can happen to male and female athletes who are influenced by internal or external factors. However, each athlete has a different way of dealing with stress to get out of the existing pressure. This study aims to analyze how gender differences can affect the cognitive appraisal process of archery athletes in dealing with stress. The quantitative descriptive method with an ex-post facto research approach was used in this study involving 23 archery athletes from Bandung City. The instruments used in the study were the Cognitive Appraisal Rating Scale (CARS) questionnaire and the Brief-COPE Inventory Scale, which were given once to respondents. After the data was obtained, data analysis was carried out using the SPSS Version 29 linear regression test. The results of the study showed that there was a significant influence of cognitive appraisal on stress coping as a management strategy based on gender differences in archery athletes. This study concludes that cognitive appraisal has a significant influence on stress coping based on gender differences between men and women in archery athletes from Bandung City. So the author suggests paying more attention to the athlete's stress condition by conducting Psychological Skills Training (PST) if the athlete is already showing signs of stress.

Abstract

Background: Many BMX cross athletes experience high levels of anxiety before competing. While there is a wealth of research on anxiety in other sports, research specifically examining anxiety perceptions in BMX cross-athletes, taking gender and competition level into account, is limited. Objectives: This study aims to analyse the perception of anxiety of BMX cross-athletes in competition, viewed from gender and competition class. Methods: The method used is quantitative descriptive using the Sport Anxiety Scale-2 (SAS-2), which consists of 15 items and is divided into three main subscales, namely somatic, worry, and concentration disorders. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS Version 29 to determine the percentage of anxiety perception and differences in each gender and competition level. Subjects involving 18 BMX cross athletes in Bandung City aged 16.94 ± 3.404 years. Data analysis was carried out by presenting the percentage of results. Results: The results showed that BMX Cross athletes had a moderate level of anxiety, with a mean score of 2.43 ± 0.58 based on the SAS-2 scale (1–4). Descriptively, female athletes showed slightly higher mean anxiety scores than male athletes. Based on competition class, athletes in higher categories (U-23 and elite) tended to have higher mean anxiety scores compared to junior and challenge levels. However, these findings are descriptive only and should be interpreted with caution. Conclusion: This study concluded that BMX cross athletes have moderate levels of anxiety. Coaches and sports psychologists are encouraged to implement mental management training to further support athletes in stressful situations. Future studies should include larger, more diverse samples and examine additional factors to deepen our understanding of anxiety in BMX cross athletes.

Abstract

Study Purpose. The background of this study is the low kicking speed of several junior karate athletes, which impacts the effectiveness of attacks during competition. The aim of this study is to improve the kicking quality, specifically the speed of the mawashi geri kicks of junior karate athletes. Materials and Methods. The research method used was an experiment with a two-group pretest-posttest design. The research sample consisted of 10 junior karate athletes with an age range of 15-17 years who were divided into two groups, namely the knee jump training group and the box jump training group . The research instrument used was a mawashi geri kick speed test by recording the time needed to perform three kicks as quickly as possible. The tools needed include a stopwatch, a meter, and a punching bag. The data were analyzed using a normality test, a homogeneity test, a paired sample t-test, and an independent sample t-test. Results. The average percentage increase in the knee jump group was 11.84%, while the box jump group increased by 6.64%, with an overall average increase reaching 9.24%. The results of the paired sample t-test showed a significant difference between the pretest and posttest results (p <0.05), while the results of the independent sample t-test showed no significant difference between the two methods (p>0.05). Conclusion. Thus, it can be concluded that plyometric training, both bent knee jumps and box jumps, is effective in increasing the speed of mawashi geri kicks in junior karate athletes. However, bent-knee jumps yielded greater average gains than box jumps, as the coordination of the knee-to-chest jump is considered to best align with the characteristics of the mawashi geri kick technique.

Abstract

Study Purpose. This study aims to determine the effect of Repeated Sprint Ability (RSA) training on the speed endurance of backs in the Bandung City rugby sevens team. Material and Methods. The method used was a quasi-experimental study with a randomized pretest–posttest control group design. The sample consisted of 20 athletes divided into an experimental group (10 athletes) and a control group (10 athletes). The experimental group underwent an RSA training program for four weeks, with three sessions per week, while the control group followed the team's regular training schedule. The measurement instrument used was the Repeated Sprint Ability Test, specifically the 6 × 40 m protocol, to obtain speed endurance indicators (mean sprint time). Data analysis included descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, paired t-tests, and independent t-tests. Result. The results showed that RSA training had a significant effect on improving speed endurance in the experimental group. However, the difference test indicated no significant difference between the experimental and control groups in terms of speed endurance (p=.348). In contrast, a significant difference was found in the Fatigue Index (FI) between groups (p=.023), indicating that RSA training was more effective in reducing fatigue and improving the ability to maintain sprint performance under repeated high-intensity conditions. Conclusion. These findings suggest that RSA training is more effective in enhancing fatigue tolerance and maintaining the quality of repeated sprints, as required in rugby sevens. Thus, RSA training is recommended to be systematically integrated into the physical periodization program of back athletes to improve performance readiness in the competition phase.
