Abstract

Writing is a skill that is necessary for success in the academic world. Writing is a necessary activity in education that fosters significant growth in both teaching and learning. However, good writing requires a variety of skills, including a wide vocabulary, the capacity for contextual understanding, analytical strength, the capacity for inference, the capacity for critical thought, and much more. This skill is unquestionably difficult to acquire, especially when writing in English, which naturally puts more pressure and anxiety on students. This study was designed to investigate the types and levels of writing anxiety experienced by EFL students taking an academic writing course at an English department at a university in Jambi, regardless of their gender. The instrument of this study was a close-ended questionnaire that was adopted from Cheng (2004). It consists of 22 statements about different types of anxiety (cognitive, somatic, and avoidance behavior). There were 225 students who participated in the study. Majority of them 82.2% (185 students) were female and only 17.8% (40 students) were male. The results of the study indicated that there are differences in the level of anxiety experienced by male and female students. The highest score of the two genders is in the somatic anxiety type; namely, women have a mean score of 3.36 and men have a mean score of 3.07. Although both have high levels, there is a slight difference in numbers, so women experience higher levels of anxiety than men, and the type of anxiety they have is somatic anxiety.

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to comprehensively investigate the experiences in writing undergraduate theses, the challenges faced, and strategies to alleviate the encountered challenges, of ten EFL student teachers at one higher education institution in Jambi. To collect the data, we employed semi-structured interviews guided by an interview protocol to elicit the participants’ responses. The results of the study, through thematic analysis (Braun & Clark, 2006), indicated that there are four major themes of challenges in writing an undergraduate thesis, including linguistics and writing knowledge issues, psychological issues, media and resources issues, and supervision and time management issues. To cope with those challenges, the participants employed some strategies, such as self-management strategy, technological help, and help from others. This study suggests EFL student teachers identify issues they struggle with in writing their theses. It is necessary so they could find a helpful way to deal with the challenge.

Abstract

Undergraduate thesis supervision plays a critical role in shaping students' academic success, particularly in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. However, supervising EFL students poses various challenges for lecturers, often impacting the quality and progress of student research. This qualitative case study explores the experiences of eight lecturers supervising undergraduate theses in an English education program at a public university in Jambi, Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke's (2006) six-phase framework. Findings reveal two major categories of challenges: internal and external. Internal challenges include time constraints due to heavy workloads and mismatches between supervisors’ expertise and student research topics. External challenges involve student disengagement, poor writing skills, limited progress, low motivation, and external personal issues. To address these, lecturers employed three main strategies: (1) self-management (scheduling supervision, learning new content areas), (2) assistance (giving direction, motivation, and written corrective feedback), and (3) communication and technological support (maintaining regular contact and using online platforms for supervision). The study highlights the complex dynamics of thesis supervision in EFL contexts and the proactive efforts of lecturers to navigate these challenges. The findings underscore the need for institutional support, targeted training, and better supervisor-student alignment to enhance the supervision process and student outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of academic supervision, job satisfaction, and integrity on teacher performance, with trust in the principal as a mediating variable in public high schools in West Tanjung Jabung Regency. Using a quantitative approach with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM-PLS) analysis techniques through SmartPLS 4, this study involved 139 teachers as a sample. The results showed that integrity significantly influenced teacher performance, while job satisfaction and academic supervision significantly influenced trust in the principal. However, integrity did not influence trust, and trust in the principal did not significantly influence teacher performance. Furthermore, academic supervision and job satisfaction had no direct effect on performance, and all mediation pathways through trust in the principal were declared insignificant. These findings emphasize the importance of strengthening integrity and a more comprehensive professional development strategy to improve teacher performance.

Abstract

Suboptimal teacher performance, characterized by less adaptive lesson planning and inconsistent evaluation, is a major obstacle to improving the quality of national education. This research focuses on an in-depth analysis of the relationship between transformational leadership, communication style, school culture, and emotional intelligence on educator productivity. Adopting the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method for various literature from 2020 to 2026, the research stages included secondary data collection from Google Scholar and SINTA, systematic screening, and thematic synthesis. The research findings showed a significant positive correlation across all variables, both partially and simultaneously. Quantitatively, the literature data recorded a contribution of communication style reaching 71.0%, followed by school culture at 16.01%, transformational leadership at 12.94%, and emotional intelligence at 10.88%. The analysis results demonstrate that inspiring principal behavior and effective communication, when combined with a conducive work environment and teacher emotional maturity, can significantly boost academic achievement. The main conclusion emphasizes that the integration of visionary leadership and individual psychological stability is a crucial instrument in optimizing school performance. This study recommends that school principals adopt an adaptive managerial style oriented toward strengthening organizational values and interpersonal empathy. Therefore, improving teacher performance requires a holistic approach that aligns structural leadership factors with the dynamics of the school's social culture to address the increasingly complex challenges of modern education.

Abstract

The phenomenon of school dropouts in Indonesia is a complex issue influenced by various multidimensional factors. This study aims to identify the factors causing school dropouts and analyze government policies to reduce the dropout rate. The method used is Systematic Literature Review(SLR). The analysis results show that economic factors are the most dominant cause, mainly due to limited family income, high education costs, and the demand for children to contribute to the family economy. In addition, social and cultural environmental factors, such as low public awareness of the importance of education, certain cultural values, and the influence of the surrounding environment, also contribute to increasing the dropout rate. Individual factors, such as low motivation to learn, interest, and academic ability of students, are also factors in dropping out of school. On the other hand, the government has implemented various policies to reduce the dropout rate, including the School Operational Assistance (BOS/BOSP), the Smart Indonesia Program (PIP), the free education and 12-year compulsory education policies, and regional-based programs supported by the commitment of local governments. Furthermore, strengthening data collection systems, social interventions, and cross-sector collaboration are also important strategies in addressing this issue. Although these policies have had a positive impact, their implementation still faces various obstacles, such as inaccurate targeting, uneven distribution of aid, and suboptimal coordination between institutions. Therefore, strengthening policy implementation, increasing public awareness, and a more comprehensive and sustainable approach are needed to reduce the dropout rate in Indonesia.
