Abstract

Writing is a skill that is necessary for success in the academic world. Writing is a necessary activity in education that fosters significant growth in both teaching and learning. However, good writing requires a variety of skills, including a wide vocabulary, the capacity for contextual understanding, analytical strength, the capacity for inference, the capacity for critical thought, and much more. This skill is unquestionably difficult to acquire, especially when writing in English, which naturally puts more pressure and anxiety on students. This study was designed to investigate the types and levels of writing anxiety experienced by EFL students taking an academic writing course at an English department at a university in Jambi, regardless of their gender. The instrument of this study was a close-ended questionnaire that was adopted from Cheng (2004). It consists of 22 statements about different types of anxiety (cognitive, somatic, and avoidance behavior). There were 225 students who participated in the study. Majority of them 82.2% (185 students) were female and only 17.8% (40 students) were male. The results of the study indicated that there are differences in the level of anxiety experienced by male and female students. The highest score of the two genders is in the somatic anxiety type; namely, women have a mean score of 3.36 and men have a mean score of 3.07. Although both have high levels, there is a slight difference in numbers, so women experience higher levels of anxiety than men, and the type of anxiety they have is somatic anxiety.

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to comprehensively investigate the experiences in writing undergraduate theses, the challenges faced, and strategies to alleviate the encountered challenges, of ten EFL student teachers at one higher education institution in Jambi. To collect the data, we employed semi-structured interviews guided by an interview protocol to elicit the participants’ responses. The results of the study, through thematic analysis (Braun & Clark, 2006), indicated that there are four major themes of challenges in writing an undergraduate thesis, including linguistics and writing knowledge issues, psychological issues, media and resources issues, and supervision and time management issues. To cope with those challenges, the participants employed some strategies, such as self-management strategy, technological help, and help from others. This study suggests EFL student teachers identify issues they struggle with in writing their theses. It is necessary so they could find a helpful way to deal with the challenge.

Abstract

Undergraduate thesis supervision plays a critical role in shaping students' academic success, particularly in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. However, supervising EFL students poses various challenges for lecturers, often impacting the quality and progress of student research. This qualitative case study explores the experiences of eight lecturers supervising undergraduate theses in an English education program at a public university in Jambi, Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke's (2006) six-phase framework. Findings reveal two major categories of challenges: internal and external. Internal challenges include time constraints due to heavy workloads and mismatches between supervisors’ expertise and student research topics. External challenges involve student disengagement, poor writing skills, limited progress, low motivation, and external personal issues. To address these, lecturers employed three main strategies: (1) self-management (scheduling supervision, learning new content areas), (2) assistance (giving direction, motivation, and written corrective feedback), and (3) communication and technological support (maintaining regular contact and using online platforms for supervision). The study highlights the complex dynamics of thesis supervision in EFL contexts and the proactive efforts of lecturers to navigate these challenges. The findings underscore the need for institutional support, targeted training, and better supervisor-student alignment to enhance the supervision process and student outcomes.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concepts and policy directions of the Merdeka Curriculum at the elementary school level; identify opportunities it offers for the development of basic education; map out the challenges of its implementation; and formulate effective strategies to support its optimal implementation. The study employs a Systematic Literature Review approach. The findings indicate that the Merdeka Curriculum offers significant opportunities, including greater autonomy for teachers in designing instructional materials, strengthening the Pancasila Student Profile through project-based learning, and the application of a deep learning approach. However, its implementation faces substantial challenges, namely low levels of teacher readiness in terms of psychological preparedness, knowledge, and behavior; disparities in digital infrastructure, particularly in remote areas; uneven dissemination of the policy; and slow bureaucratic responses at the local government level. Overall, the study’s findings indicate that the success of the curriculum is not solely determined by regulatory design but depends on the alignment between consistent government policies, educator competencies, and a supportive educational ecosystem. Recommended strategies include intensive and sustained professional development for teachers, equitable infrastructure distribution in underdeveloped areas, and active and innovative leadership from school principals.

Abstract

Classroom management ability is a fundamental competency that determines the effectiveness of teaching and learning processes in primary education. However, variations in teachers’ classroom management skills remain a challenge, particularly in Islamic integrated elementary schools that emphasize both pedagogical competence and character development. This study examined the simultaneous and partial effects of teaching experience, educational background, and teacher personality on classroom management ability among teachers at SDIT Ash-Shiddiiqi Jambi City. Using a quantitative explanatory survey design, data were collected from a saturation sample of 99 teachers through structured Likert-scale questionnaires. The data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results showed that teaching experience, educational background, and teacher personality jointly explained 66.6% of the variance in classroom management ability (R2=0.666R^2 = 0.666R2=0.666). Teacher personality had the strongest and statistically significant effect (β = 0.630, p < 0.001; f2=0.649f^2 = 0.649f2=0.649), followed by educational background (β = 0.214, p < 0.001; f2=0.097f^2 = 0.097f2=0.097). In contrast, teaching experience did not significantly influence classroom management ability (β = 0.082, p = 0.268; f2=0.011f^2 = 0.011f2=0.011). These findings suggest that personality-related attributes contribute more substantially to effective classroom management than teaching experience within the context of this study. Therefore, teacher development programs in Islamic elementary schools should place greater emphasis on personality development, reflective professional learning, and holistic teacher recruitment practices to enhance educational quality.
