Abstract

Lead-acid batteries are commonly used in photovoltaic systems to store solar energy for continuous use. However, lead-acid batteries have a relatively short lifespan due to frequent over-charging and over-discharging. A battery management system (BMS) is essential for accurately predicting the battery state of charge (SoC) value in order to extend the battery lifespan. In this research, a BMS is developed using the coulomb counting method to estimate the SoC value of a lead-acid battery. The coulomb counting algorithm provides a reliable estimation of the battery’s SoC value by calculating the incoming and outgoing currents. The BMS also uses two normally closed relays to prevent overcharging and over-discharging. The first relay turns on when the SoC reaches 100% full charge and turns off when the SoC decreases to 70%. The second relay turns on when the SoC reaches 20%. The BMS was tested using Blynk, a cloud-based internet of things (IoT) platform. The results showed that the BMS successfully provided monitoring and reliable control of the lead-acid battery, with a low margin of error. This demonstrates that the developed BMS can be practically implemented in photovoltaic (PV)-battery systems to extend the battery lifespan and improve the overall performance of the system.

Abstract

This work models a photovoltaic (PV) inverter connected to an IEC microgrid system. The purpose of this study was to find the characteristics of symmetrical components before and after a high impedance single phase short-circuit fault. The IEC microgrid system is tailored to the distribution system in Indonesia, where the applied voltage is 20 kV. Only parameters related to the short-circuit study are included in the model. A second-order generalized integrator frequency-locked-loop is utilized to represent the 3-phase PV inverter. The inverter model, previously treated as an ideal current source, and positive sequence current are no longer employed, as they fail to depict the characteristics of symmetric components during a phase-to-ground short-circuit fault. The IEC microgrid system connected to the PV inverter is simulated using ATPDraw-electro magnetic transient program (EMTP). Simulation results reveal that the changes in the symmetric component values of current after a fault experience a very insignificant increase. Meanwhile, the positive sequence voltage values following the short-circuit fault exhibit a negligible decrease. In contrast, the negative sequence and zero sequence voltage components after the short-circuit fault undergo a significant increase.

Abstract

The Indonesian government has also set a target to increase the contribution of renewable energy in the national energy mix to 23% by 2025 and 31% by 2050. In this paper, an analysis of Maximum PV Capacity was used on the transmission network with a minimum loading approach using the Power Factory15.1 simulation. From the simulation that has been done, it can be seen that the placement of two PV location points gets better results than the placement of one PV location point. This can be seen that the feeder load for PV location point of 74.3%, while for two PV location points of 35.8% which value is still within safe limits, but for two PV location points get better results. PV trip state frequency values obtained for single location point and two PV location points get a result of 2% of 50 Hz which is still within safe limits.

Abstract

This paper describes the optimization of energy conversion when solar radiation occurs at peak power conditions, namely at 11.00 am to 2.00 pm where the position of the sun is parallel to the layout of the PV Rooftop installation. The panels used are 5 units with the type of polycrystalline with a capacity of 1 panel unit consisting of 250 Wp. The position of the panels installed on the roof of the Andalas University building is based on an angle of 90o degrees with a position of ±255m above sea level. The advantages obtained when placed on the roof of the building are due to the minimal impact of shadow effects and environmental disturbances. Data retrieval using DC current and voltage sensors is then connected to the Arduino Uno microcontroller which is then interfaced in graphic form. Considerations in the installation of PV by reviewing the weather conditions at that time where the conditions were sunny and the air was clean with the aim that the performance when solar radiation entered the solar cells could be produced more optimally. Based on the data obtained at peak power, PV can convert DC power to 972.56 Wp. In the final stage of collecting data recorded on this PC, it can later be used as a reference for installing solar panels for household electricity scales in the West Sumatra region.

Abstract

Photovoltaic (PV) installations and wind turbines that are installed on the rooftops of buildings need to be protected because the layout is in a high position and there is a risk of being struck by lightning. Therefore, a more effective protection system is designed to anticipate electronic damage and fire on all materials in the distribution network, especially the addition of PV and wind turbine installations on building roofs. The purpose of this study is to simulate a lightning protection system on the distribution network and the results of on-grid PV energy conversion using electrical transient analyzer program (ETAP) software. Feeder relay delay times and cascade coordination patterns between outgoing and incoming relays do not overlap. the delay time of the relay working on the feeder is 0.31 s and the coordination pattern of the outgoing relay and incoming relay does not touch each other, so the delay time for the incoming relay is 2.73 s. Then testing the results of PV energy conversion connected to the grid using MATLAB Simulink monitoring obtained data reaching 1.600 Wp at peak power with sun conditions parallel to the PV installation layout.

Abstract

This research investigates the problem of Cu-Zn electrode batteries with NaCl electrolyte. Previous studies have indicated problems with the electrolyte and electrodes after charging, such as turbidity and deposits in the electrolyte, as well as corrosion on the electrodes. Consequently, the battery can only be used once due to a decline in its electrical characteristics after the initial charging. Through this research, improvements were made to the electrical characteristics of the battery by adding Na-EDTA to enhance usage efficiency. The research method involved mixing NaCl solution with the highest electrical conductivity, using six pairs of Cu-Zn electrodes arranged in series. The physical conditions of the electrolyte and electrodes were observed, and electrical characteristics were measured. The research results indicate that the use of NaCl+Na-EDTA electrolyte produces a battery voltage of 4.20 volts with a current of 2 Ah and can be used twice. Charging with solar panels can be done in 1 hour, but the frequency is limited to two times.

Abstract

Pumped hydro storage (PHS) is an energy storage technology that uses electrical energy to pump water to a higher reservoir. The water is then released back into the lower reservoir to generate electricity. If the water source is limited, the pump must be stopped to prevent damage. The automation system can improve the pump's performance and protect it from damage. Therefore, a Solar pumps automation system using a programmable logic controller for pumped hydro storage is developed to avoid damage due to overheating that can damage the pump. With this automation system, the pump will automatically stop working when no water flows. The automation system at PHS will use a programmable logic controller or PLC as the controller, with a water flow sensor and an ultrasonic sensor to measure water levels. Arduino will assist in reading the analogue input on the PLC. The research shows that all the sensors work well with an error under 0.4%. The pump will turn on when the water level is less than 30 cm, while the pump will turn off when the water flow is less than 20 liters/minute. The pump can flow water stably at a water flow value level of 25-26 liters/minute.

Abstract

Stand-alone photovoltaic system or PV is a power generation technology with potential that is environmentally friendly and also one of the solutions for saving high electricity rates today. However, problems that often occur due to weather fluctuations that are always changing, especially North Sumatra, Indonesia result in the conversion produced by solar cells not being optimal. Therefore, it is necessary to do a new model with a dual tracker system and the development of accelerator motor actuators so that the resulting energy conversion is more optimal. The result of optimizing the reliability of the polycrystalline type solar panel which is designed with an additional photovoltaic tracker system to maximize the conversion of solar energy to solar panels is to obtain an output power of 303.72 volts DC and 267.52 volts DC in the position where the tracker is not used. Then the percentage increase in energy reached 29.80%. Dual axis tracker technology is able to maximize energy conversion in improving PV usage performance. The implementation of a stand-alone PV system will be beneficial if the installation is in Indonesian territory, especially in disadvantaged, frontier and outermost areas.
