Abstract

The objectives of this research are to investigate whether: (1) students’ achievement of grammar taught by applying inductive approach higher than taught by applying deductive approach, (2) achievement of grammar of visual learning style students higher than achievement of grammar of auditory learning style students, and (3) there is an interaction between instructional approaches and learning styles on the students’ achievement of grammar. The population was students of Grade X of Vocational High School 1 Beringin Deli Serdang. Based on Cluster Sampling technique, two classes were chosen, namely Grades X1 and X3. The data were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA with 2 × 2 factorial design. The result reveals that (1) Students` grammar achievement taught by using inductive instructional approach is higher than that taught by using deductive instructional Approach (81,20 > 72,10), (2) Students with visual learning style have higher achievement in grammar than students with auditory learning style (81,90 > 72) and (3) there is significant interaction between instructional approaches and learning styles on students` achievement of grammar (4.906 > 3.96). Thus, it can be concluded that the application of instructional approaches and learning styles can affect students` achievement in grammar.   Keywords: Grammar; Instructional Approach; Learning Styles

Abstract

The objective of this study were 1) to find out the kinds of request used by male and female students in doing interaction at informal context, 2) to elaborate the way request linguistically performed by male and female students in doing interaction at informal context, and 3) to provide the reasons why male and female students perform request in the way they are. It was applied by using descriptive qualitative research.  It was conducted at Dharmawangsa Senior High School in Medan involving 3 male and 3 female students. The data were collected through observing, recording and interviewing them. The data were 44 male students’ utterances and 42 female students’ utterances taken in three areas of school: canteen, in front of the class, and parking lot. The findings showed that 1) syntactical realization and lexical realization were found in students’ utterances with four kinds of syntactical realization: imperative, interrogative, declarative, and modal auxiliary; 2) the way of requests linguistically performed by male students was the direct way. Similarly, the way of requests linguistically performed by female students was the direct way. 3) There were two reasons why male and female students perform request namely interlocutors and age. Abstract

This study explained the Li Niha Maintenance among Teenagers of OrahuaMahasiswaNias (OMN) Medan in Kelurahan Lauci Medan Tuntungan. The objectives were (1) to investigate what maintenance of Li Niha is preserved by the Nias teenagers of OMN Medan (2)to describe how is the Li Niha maintained by the Nias teenagers of OMN Medan (3) to explain the reason why is the Li Niha maintained by the Nias teenagers of OMN Medan. This study applied phenomenological design as a part of qualitative research design. Data were words or utterances of 20 persons teenager of OMN Medan collected through observation and interview techniques. The data were analyzed by using Bogdan & Biklen, (1992). The findings of this study showed that: (1) four types of Li Niha maintenance preserved by the teenagers of OMN Medan namely strong, dominant, moderate and weak maintenance; (2) four ways of Li Niha maintained by Nias teenagers of OMNMedan,; and (3) five reasons the teenagers of Orahua Mahasiswa Nias (OMN) Medan  in Kelurahan Lauci Medan Tuntungan maintain Li Niha. Keywords: Language Shift, Maintenance, Intermarriage, Qualitative

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to investigate the way the bilingual families decide their own language policy through the components of language policy, the way the parents apply language policy to succeed their children words production, and to find out the factors why the parents apply the language policy the way they are. This research applied qualitative approach by phenomenology term through observation, questionnaire and in–depth interview. The research findings showed that bilingual families use the components of language policy namely language ideology, language practice and language management. Mostly parents considered language ideology and language management. Otherwise, language practice were not applied by them completely, it can be seen through language that their children use will be different with what the parents have expected. Language policy is applied in family by practicing the language directly. There are some influences that make the parents practice the language directly, namely: influences of outside home and there is no balance guidance of practicing language between mother and father. Factors that support parents in conducting language policy are intermarriage, maintaining the language particularly tribal language, the position of language using in formal context such as school and the position of language which is used in their environment.   Keywords: Bilingual families; Language policy; and Word Production.

Abstract

This study focused on describing: (1) what phones are acquired by a two years old Mandailing child. (2) how a two years old Mandailing child acquires the phonology production.  (3) how the phonological  productions of the words acquired by a two years old Mandailing child. A qualitative research was applied. The findings indicated that kinds of word are noun, adjective, verb and adverb and the most aspect of phonology found in this study is noun. The subject acquired the words through interaction with his family and sometimes used body language when he talked with his parents. The phonological production of the words acquired by the subject with several processes out of the twelve processes. Based on the findings, there are some suggestions: (1) Parents have to guide his child in learning to communicate as good as possible in order to the child can communicate well and effectively with other people in his environment, (2) In order to make a good communication and conversation, it is suggested to make approach to the child’s behaviors and habitual, (3) If parents want their child can acquire words well, they have to introduce words well and also guide him to pronounce it every day when they talk with him. Abstract

The aims are to find out: 1) the types of code switching used in the Toba Batak wedding ceremony, 2) how the participants switch language in the process of Toba Batak wedding ceremony, and 3) reason why the participants switch language in the process of Toba Batak wedding ceremony. The data were obtained from the utterances of participants which contain code switching during the process of Toba Batak wedding ceremony precisely in Marhaban, replying and exchanging the verses of rhymes, exchanging of Tepak, and upah-upah stages. They were analyzed by using some steps as normally applied in descriptive qualitative method. The instruments of data collection were audio visual recorder. The findings of the study indicate that; a) Three types of code switching found namely intrasentential, intersentential and tag switching b) Participants in Toba Batak wedding ceremony mix some languages based on participants’ tribes which involved in the process of Toba Batak wedding ceremony and they also adjust the situation and the condition of the people c) Three reasons of code switching during the process of Toba Batak wedding ceremony namely the differences of family’s tribes, religion factor and place of wedding ceremony be held. Abstract

The objectives of the research were to describe the types of speech acts used in televised political debates of governor candidates of North Sumatera, to derive the dominant type of speech acts used in televised political debates of governor candidates of North Sumatera and to elaborate the way of five governor candidates of North Sumatera use speech acts in televised political debates. This research was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative research. The findings show that there were only four types of speech acts used in televised political debates, Debat Pemilukada Sumatera Utara and Uji Publik Cagub dan Cawagub Sumatera Utara, they were assertives, directives, commissives and expressives. The dominant type of speech acts used in both televised political debates was assertives, with 82 utterances or 51.6% in Debat Pemilukada Sumatera Utara and 36 utterances or 41.37% in Uji Publik Cagub dan Cawagub Sumatera Utara. The way of governor candidates of North Sumatera used speech acts in televised political debates is in direct speech acts, they spoke straight to the point and clearly in order to make the other candidates and audiences understand their utterances.   Keywords: Governor Candidate; Political Debate; Speech Acts

Abstract

This thesis deals with maxims violation of politeness principle in Indonesia’s Candidates Debate. The objectives of the study are to describe the types of maxims violation, to elaborate the linguistic realization, and reasons of participants violated maxims of politeness principle. The approach in this study are based on Politeness theory by Geoffrey Leech (1983); tact, generosity, approbation, modesty, agreement and sympathy. The method of this research employed qualitative design. The subjects or the data source are taken from utterances of Presidential Candidates in Dialogue of Indonesia’s Presidential debate. All written data are the transcriptions of recorded observation and interview. The data are taken from you tube. The finding prove that four  types of Maxims violation are applied by the President candidates. The writer analyzes that there are 4 maxims are occurred, namely agreement maxim (4%), approbation maxim (4%), modesty maxim (4%), and generosity maxim (15%). the most dominant violated maxim is generosity (15%) out of the total numbers of maxims violation found in the dialogue. The reasons are the participants tried to obtain the benefit from the hearer by delivering the questions expecting to cost the hearer. Key Words: politeness principle, maxim,  debate

Abstract

This research deals with rhetorical appeals namely logical, emotional, & ethical appeal used in 10 smartphone advertisements from billboards such as Lenovo, Oppo, Evercoss, Advan, Samsung, iPhone, Asus, Vivo, Huawei, & i-Cherry. The analytical tool of this study is based on Ramage et al’s (2010) theory of rhetorical appeals. A qualitative research design is suitably used in this study to give in-depth description and result of analysis. The findings of the analysis about the rhetorical appeals in the smartphone advertisements are: 1) The rhetorical appeals that mostly used in the ten smartphone advertisements is logical appeal due to the total 67 characteristic strategies, whereas emotional appeals only used in 29 characteristic strategies, & ethical appeal which cannot be counted in numbers as it is about credibility which is something qualitative namely expertise, experience, & reputation; 2) The rhetorical appeals in the ten smartphone advertisements are actualized by including the characteristic strategies that tightly represented to each type of rhetorical appeals; 3) The reasons of the actualization of rhetorical appeals application in the smartphone advertisements are because logical appeal attempts to provide sufficient evidence from empirical sources and sound reasoning.Keywords: Advertisement; Language Style; Persuasive strategies; Rhetorical Appeals
