Soenting Melajoe Newspaper (1912-1921) was Indonesia’s first indigenous women’s newspaper during the Dutch colonial period. Its readers considered this newspaper as a command in the women’s movement in the Minangkabau society. Editors were deemed as generals, readers as soldiers. The articles in Soenting Melajoe were submitted by women from various regions. The newspaper became a means of exchanging ideas and debating between women, moderated by female editors; Rohana Kudus and Ratna Juwita. This writing constructed the profile of writers based on their writings in Soenting Melajoe. The theory used in this research was the feminist communication theory, focusing on the revalorism aspect of it. This research employed a historical method. Data collection was done through literature study. The subjects of this research are the writings of Indonesian women in Soenting Melajoe. The female writers of Soenting Melajoe came from the administrative center of the Hindia Dutch, port cities, and coffee warehouse regions. Abstract

Abstract

The current reality is showing that the communities surrounding Cibodas Biosphere Reserve (CBC) are still doing horrible things, as evidenced by the fact that they are still taking the resources from the forest or illegally entering the area. In this case, the Forest Police (Polhut) who have responsibility for maintaining forest security, need to act to minimize disturbances in the forest area. This study aims to obtain an overview of Polhut’s communication patterns in dealing with disturbances at the Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park (TNGGP) as the core area of the CBR. This study used a qualitative method through a phenomenological approach with the communication effectiveness theory. The information-gathering was conducted through an in-depth interview with two Polhut TNGGP officers who have been experienced for more than ten years in their duties. The information was processed according to the communication methods and theories. The results showed that the communication pattern conducted by the Polhut to the communities used persuasive interpersonal communication and group communication. Polhut realized that they must be close to the communities so that they can invite them to act a role in protecting forest resources. However, the communication has not been effective because there are still some obstacles to the communities and some of the supporting factors for the effectiveness of communication have not been fulfilled.

Abstract

Forest and land fires are a major problem that recurs annually in Riau Province. Various efforts have been made to prevent the recurrence of this disaster. One of the efforts is to build and develop a Task Force of Forest and Land Fire management to be capable of providing a quick and coordinated response. This research aims to analyze the organizational development of the Riau forest and The tast force of Forest and Land Fire based on the mechanism of its formation and also the four information flow models. This research used a qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews with stakeholders, field observations and document analysis. Based on the four information flows model, the relationship between the members of the task force and the task force of forest and land fire management was found to be less strong than their relationship with their main agency. Each member of the task force team interacted more within the organization in which they served. The working relationship between the Riau Province forest and the force of forest and land fire team is based on the structure set by the governor, with the main tasks and functions of each section outlined in the governor's regulation. Interaction between task force members is stronger at the leadership level, where they often coordinate to prepare and plan for forest and land fire control, while at the site level, in the integrated patrol team group, they carry out forest and land fire prevention and control activities together. In the forest and land fire control ecosystem, the task force is part of the global forest and land fire control ecosystem. It is expected that the results of this study can provide input for stakeholders in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the Forest Land Task Force in efforts to control forest and land fires in Riau Province.

Abstract

Abstract

This study uses a mixed-methods approach to examine the perspectives of snake owners in Indonesia regarding snakes, venomous species, and snakebite management. A survey was distributed to 1,109 respondents, with 109 participants) forming the core group for analysis. The research aims to assess snake owners’ knowledge about venomous snakes, handling snakebites, and myths surrounding these reptiles. Findings indicate that while the public generally fears snakes, many reptile enthusiasts in Indonesia keep snakes as pets for reasons such as hobby, conservation, and education. However, a significant gap in knowledge exists regarding the identification of venomous versus non-venomous snakes, with some respondents unable to distinguish between them accurately. Additionally, while most respondents recognized the importance of immobilization following a snake bite, some still believed in outdated and dangerous practices, such as suctioning or cutting the wound. The study also uncovered that while most participants view snakes as ordinary creatures, a small portion still holds superstitions, such as believing snakes are evil spirits. This perpetuates fear and misunderstanding of snakes. In conclusion, the research highlights the need for better education on snake identification, proper bite management, and debunking myths to improve the safety of snake keeping in Indonesia. Increased public awareness and accurate information can help mitigate the risks of keeping snakes as pets and foster a more informed and responsible approach to reptile care.

Abstract

The exploitation of the protected land of the Karst Landscape Conservation Area (KBAK) of Gunung Sewu for the construction of Raffi Ahmad's Bekizart Beach Club will have implications for the disruption of environmental sustainability and the well-being of the local community. Mass media coverage of conflicts in environmental management is closely related to the application of environmental journalism (Sudibyo, 2014). This research aims to determine the level of application of environmental journalism in online medias Suara.com and Harian Jogja in reporting on the construction of Bekizart Beach Club during the period of December 2023 to January 2024 based on four principles of environmental journalism by Sudibyo (2014): sustainability, biosentrics, environmental justice, and professionalism. The method used is quantitative content analysis by Kripendorff (2004). The results show that the level of application of the pro-sustainability principle in Suara.com is 70.84%, categorized as high, while in Harian Jogja, it is 26.67%, categorized as low. The application of the biosentrics principle in Suara.com is 56.25%, categorized as medium, while in Harian Jogja, it is 30%, categorized as low. The application of the environmental justice principle in Suara.com is 34.38%, categorized as low, while in Harian Jogja, it is 10%, categorized as very low. The application of the professionalism principle in Suara.com is 56.25%, categorized as medium, while in Harian Jogja, it is 40%, categorized as medium.
