Abstract

Riau Province, as the habitat for almost one-third of the Sumatran tiger population, continues to grapple with the challenges of human-wildlife conflict. Mass media pays particular attention to cases of conflict involving protected animals, especially if such conflicts result in fatal casualties, as seen in the case of Tasik Tebing Serai Village. This research aims to critically analyze the media discourse construction related to this conflict, which can influence public awareness, community attitudes, and even policy responses. The critical discourse analysis method by Teun van Dijk is employed to identify text structures, social cognition, and social contexts in the news published by national and local media, namely detik.com and riaupos.co, reporting on the conflict in Tasik Tebing Serai Village, Riau Province. The research findings indicate that despite mass media presenting factual information, they need to catch up in providing education, a fundamental principle of environmental journalism. Detik.com leans towards utilizing the "rewrite" method to increase its publication quantity, whereas riaupos.co focuses more on presenting diverse topics. Both media have their own dramatic and sensational characteristics in delivering the news by utilizing the word of choice to catch the reader's attention to the issue. This study delves into a deeper understanding of the importance of reporting environmental issues with environmental journalism principles to enhance public awareness, understanding, and responsibility regarding environmental problems.

Abstract

The new phase of the State Capital Relocation (IKN) began in 2019, after President Joko Widodo inaugurated that Indonesia's capital would move to East Kalimantan. The relocation has been ongoing since then and has entered the infrastructure development stage. However, beyond the grandeur of the IKN construction, many aspects have been affected. This research aims to understand how the examined media construct discourse on capital relocation. This research employs a qualitative method, utilizing Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis model. Discourse analysis is conducted through three stages: text analysis, discourse practice analysis, and sociocultural analysis.  Data collection methods were carried out using observation techniques, documentation studies through television media reporting, and in-depth interviews with informants representing Trans TV, Kompas TV, SCTV and NET. The research results in the text dimension indicate that the majority of the reporting is not in favour of the government's decision to relocate the capital because it is considered rushed in planning and has various negative impacts. In the discourse practice dimension, the reporting is heavily influenced by the media's socio-economic status (SES) in shaping the discourse. In the sociocultural dimension, it is shown that the capital relocation is one of the political strategies, and there is disagreement among various parties regarding the relocation. Therefore, the researcher suggests that the examined media should present balanced reporting and provide a balanced perspective in their coverage. Furthermore, caution is needed from the media to avoid being influenced by external media domination, ensuring that the information reported is accountable and prioritizes the public interest.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to map the scholarly development of research on the integration of destination branding and ecotourism within global literature from 2014 to 2024. Using a bibliometric analysis based on Scopus data, the study traces publication trends, author and journal productivity, country level collaboration, and the thematic structures that emerge in international research. A total of 205 articles meeting the selection criteria were analyzed using Biblioshiny in the Bibliometrix package in R Studio, following stages of data cleaning, metadata standardization, and keyword as well as citation-network mapping. The findings indicate a significant rise in publications connecting destination branding with ecotourism, with the highest growth recorded in 2024. Keywords such as ecotourism, destination image, and sustainable tourism dominate the thematic network, while the thematic map reveals three major clusters: the integration of branding and sustainability, tourist experiences and emotional attachment, and the role of ecotourism in shaping destination image. These findings suggest that global research is shifting toward a multidisciplinary approach that positions conservation, local identity, and ecological experience as essential components of destination branding. Nevertheless, methodological limitations such as reliance on metadata, language constraints, and the use of a single database restrict the generalizability of the results. Thus, this study offers an initial overview of the knowledge structure in this field and opens avenues for further research that combines bibliometrics with content analysis to gain a more comprehensive understanding of its conceptual dynamics.

Abstract

This study explores stakeholder participation in waste management communication in Bandung City, which frequently faces waste emergencies. Despite the government's implementation of various waste management programs, the issue remains unresolved. Effective waste management requires active collaboration among all stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, media, and community leaders. Using a constructivist paradigm with a qualitative case study approach, this research examines the roles of government entities (Bandung City Environment Agency, PD. Kebersihan, and Bapelitbang), non-governmental actors (Forum Bandung Juara Bebas Sampah/BJBS, including environmental activists, academics, and business representatives), as well as media and community leaders. Informants were purposively selected based on their involvement in waste management efforts. Findings reveal that collaboration occurs between the government, legislators, and grassroots environmental activist groups, such as BJBS, which directly engages in waste management initiatives. However, from a pentahelix collaboration perspective, effective communication requires greater involvement of mass media, both conventional and digital. Currently, waste management communication relies mainly on social media accounts with limited reach, such as Humas Bandung, Dinas Lingkungan Hidup Kota Bandung, and Forum BJBS. This limited engagement hinders public awareness and participation. To achieve a sustainable solution, public involvement and awareness must be strengthened, ensuring that waste management is a shared responsibility rather than solely the government's duty.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Forest and land fires in Ogan Ilir Regency have become an annual disaster, the impacts of which are not felt equally. Women, as primary managers of households and family health, bear a double burden in the form of increased domestic work, health disturbances, and threats to livelihoods. However, amidst the marginalization of their voices, Solidaritas Perempuan Palembang emerged as an advocacy partner that transforms the position of women from passive victims into empowered subjects. Law Number 32 of 2009 stipulates that every person has the right to a good and healthy living environment, which serves as the legal foundation for the environmental advocacy carried out by Solidaritas Perempuan Palembang. This study uses a juridical normative approach with a descriptive-analytical nature, supported by field data through interviews with Palembang Women's Solidarity. Data were obtained through library studies and field studies. The results indicate that Solidaritas Perempuan Palembang environmental advocacy is multidimensional and implemented through public campaigns to build narratives and solidarity via social media, community education to raise critical awareness of violated ecological rights, and women's capacity building through feminist training, public speaking, and feminist economic solidarity products (Feminist Economic Solidarity). This advocacy serves as a practice of ecofeminism, affirming that resolving environmental issues requires the involvement of women as empowered actors. Keywords: ecofeminism; environmental advocacy; environmental communication.

Abstract

Management of conflict and negotiation played an important role in solving a dispute. Both actions were not simple tasks in resolving conflicts since different points of view usually involve. This was what happened in the dispute of animal welfare issue between Bandung Zoo and Scorpion Wildlife Foundation. The dispute that became the focus of this article related to the accusation raised by the Scorpion Wildlife Foundation towards the Bandung Zoo in terms of animal welfare abandonment. The conflict between the two organizations has increased because the zoo did not accept the allegations and intended to bring the foundation to a legal court for the reason of defamation. This article looked at the use of the management of conflict and the negotiation to resolve this conflict by the Agency of Natural Resources of West Java as facilitator. The study used constructive case study method to chronologically construct the conflict and the use of negotiation. The results showed that the facilitator dominated the negotiation process, while the conflicting parties have not had any agreement to resolve the problem. The condition had a potential to be invalid any time if the dispute was not completely resolved.

Abstract

The human-crocodile conflict frequently happens in Indonesia. Based on the data from http://www.crocodile-attack.info/, it is claimed that Indonesia is a country with the most cases of crocodile attacks. Mostly the attacks involved the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus). On the other hand, this conflict is worsened by the spread of inaccurate information among communities. From October 2019 to October 2021, there were 12 false stories about crocodile attacks. These hoaxes were distributed on social media, causing fear to those who consumed the information. It is crucial to be investigated, especially from the perspective of environmental journalism. This study describes how mainstream media outlets tried to clarify the hoaxes. The results show many materials contained by information disorder, which need to be clarified by the media to ensure clarity and truth for the public. This study finds that most mainstream media still have their conscience to protect the public from false information. It was done by practicing curation journalism that includes the discipline of verification. In conclusion, the media and information sources need to have a good comprehension of crocodile behavior. The research also catches the need for environmental journalism training for media practitioners in Indonesia. Thus, the media will be able to offer the best solution for reducing the attack while at the same time giving adequate education for the public to live in harmony with Indonesian flora and fauna.
