Abstract

This study uses a mixed-methods approach to examine the perspectives of snake owners in Indonesia regarding snakes, venomous species, and snakebite management. A survey was distributed to 1,109 respondents, with 109 participants) forming the core group for analysis. The research aims to assess snake owners’ knowledge about venomous snakes, handling snakebites, and myths surrounding these reptiles. Findings indicate that while the public generally fears snakes, many reptile enthusiasts in Indonesia keep snakes as pets for reasons such as hobby, conservation, and education. However, a significant gap in knowledge exists regarding the identification of venomous versus non-venomous snakes, with some respondents unable to distinguish between them accurately. Additionally, while most respondents recognized the importance of immobilization following a snake bite, some still believed in outdated and dangerous practices, such as suctioning or cutting the wound. The study also uncovered that while most participants view snakes as ordinary creatures, a small portion still holds superstitions, such as believing snakes are evil spirits. This perpetuates fear and misunderstanding of snakes. In conclusion, the research highlights the need for better education on snake identification, proper bite management, and debunking myths to improve the safety of snake keeping in Indonesia. Increased public awareness and accurate information can help mitigate the risks of keeping snakes as pets and foster a more informed and responsible approach to reptile care.

Abstract

The exploitation of the protected land of the Karst Landscape Conservation Area (KBAK) of Gunung Sewu for the construction of Raffi Ahmad's Bekizart Beach Club will have implications for the disruption of environmental sustainability and the well-being of the local community. Mass media coverage of conflicts in environmental management is closely related to the application of environmental journalism (Sudibyo, 2014). This research aims to determine the level of application of environmental journalism in online medias Suara.com and Harian Jogja in reporting on the construction of Bekizart Beach Club during the period of December 2023 to January 2024 based on four principles of environmental journalism by Sudibyo (2014): sustainability, biosentrics, environmental justice, and professionalism. The method used is quantitative content analysis by Kripendorff (2004). The results show that the level of application of the pro-sustainability principle in Suara.com is 70.84%, categorized as high, while in Harian Jogja, it is 26.67%, categorized as low. The application of the biosentrics principle in Suara.com is 56.25%, categorized as medium, while in Harian Jogja, it is 30%, categorized as low. The application of the environmental justice principle in Suara.com is 34.38%, categorized as low, while in Harian Jogja, it is 10%, categorized as very low. The application of the professionalism principle in Suara.com is 56.25%, categorized as medium, while in Harian Jogja, it is 40%, categorized as medium. Increasing supervision and journalists' understanding of the application of environmental journalism principles need to be done through training and the establishment of regulations regarding reporting on environmental issues in each mass media.

Abstract

This study explores stakeholder participation in waste management communication in Bandung City, which frequently faces waste emergencies. Despite the government's implementation of various waste management programs, the issue remains unresolved. Effective waste management requires active collaboration among all stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, media, and community leaders. Using a constructivist paradigm with a qualitative case study approach, this research examines the roles of government entities (Bandung City Environment Agency, PD. Kebersihan, and Bapelitbang), non-governmental actors (Forum Bandung Juara Bebas Sampah/BJBS, including environmental activists, academics, and business representatives), as well as media and community leaders. Informants were purposively selected based on their involvement in waste management efforts. Findings reveal that collaboration occurs between the government, legislators, and grassroots environmental activist groups, such as BJBS, which directly engages in waste management initiatives. However, from a pentahelix collaboration perspective, effective communication requires greater involvement of mass media, both conventional and digital. Currently, waste management communication relies mainly on social media accounts with limited reach, such as Humas Bandung, Dinas Lingkungan Hidup Kota Bandung, and Forum BJBS. This limited engagement hinders public awareness and participation. To achieve a sustainable solution, public involvement and awareness must be strengthened, ensuring that waste management is a shared responsibility rather than solely the government's duty.

Abstract

Digital traces of mental health conversations on social media X have become a new culture, especially for the young generation. This study aimed to explain the network, themes and comment of social media discussion posts about mental health in Indonesia. This study has focused on each conversation in the form of tweets using big data analysis from posts with containing keyword related and specific criteria on the theme of mental health. This research was collected 15,200 mental health-themed discussions on X. Further, the researcher conducted a selection based on engagement and specific criteria through the NoLimit tool in 2021. A total of 4969 threads were analyzed further. As a result, researchers found a network that formed 3 clusters, namely the Stress cluster, Depression cluster, and Bipolar cluster. Apart from that, three big themes were found that represent every conversation on social media X in Indonesia, namely, (1) The Story of Survivors, (2) Mental Health as a Trend and Fashion, (3) Stress, Anxiety, or just a Gerd? Through the study of netnography, it is revealed that social media serves as a community's backbone while also perpetuating stigma related to mental health issues. Mental health in Indonesia is still an issue that does not get serious attention, even though the number of cases of mental disorders continues to increase.

Abstract

Korean dramas are not merely artistic works without meaning or purpose. They serve as a medium to depict social realities through storytelling and visual art. One of Korean dramas that reflects the social realities of Korea is Pachinko, set in the 1930s when patriarchal culture and the low status of women were still prevalent. The purpose of this study is to explore how the representation of alpha woman is depicted in Pachinko. The study adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis method to interpret the signs within the drama through three levels of analysis: denotation, connotation, and myth. The researcher selected three episodes from the eight-episode series (episodes 3, 4, and 5) for a detailed analysis of scenes referencing alpha woman characteristics. The findings of this research reveal various ways in which Pachinko portrays alpha woman. The study highlights the courage, independence, and resilience of woman characters. This research recommends that future Korean dramas continue to feature alpha women characters to inspire gender equality. Additionally, future studies could explore similar representations in different cultural contexts to provide comparative analyses, enriching the understanding of gender representation across cultures.

Abstract

Human-crocodile conflict (HCC) is an important yet under-researched aspect of human-wildlife interactions in Indonesia with significant consequences for conservation efforts and public awareness. This study used a quantitative framing method with a content analysis approach based on 168 news articles published by detik.com in 2024 to examine how human-crocodile conflict was portrayed in this one of Indonesia's leading online media. Four variables were analyzed: news source, tone, frame type, and use of thematic versus episodic framing. The findings showed a strong reliance on government sources (79.16%), with insignificant representation of non-governmental perspectives. This resulted in narrow narrative coverage. News coverage was dominated by negative reporting, particularly in government-sourced stories (sentiment score: -0.50), perpetuating fear-based stereotypes about crocodiles. The most common frames were attribution of responsibility (34.0%) and human interest (30.1%), while thematic frames were rare (14.3%), indicating a preference for episodic and event-driven reporting over systemic analysis. These patterns suggest that the media on detik.com often reinforces sensationalism at the expense of balanced conservation messages. The study underscores the need for more inclusive, science-based reporting to foster coexistence and support effective conflict mitigation.

Abstract

Video editor play an important role in building the storyline and visual quality of audiovisual productions. In the production of the Feature video “Berani Melangkah Menuju Sejahtera”, the editor applied non-linear Editing (NLE) techniques throughout the process. The purpose of this paper is to explain the application of NLE techniques, which include the processes of logging, offline Editing, online Editing, and rendering. The creation process consists of three main stages: pre-production, production, and post-production, with a primary focus on the post-production stage. The primary focus of the analysis is on the post-production phase, where non-linear Editing techniques are applied comprehensively. The Editing process is outlined through the stages of logging for efficient footage management, offline Editing to build the initial narrative structure, online Editing for precise visual and audio refinement, and rendering for finalizing the work. The use of NLE allows for high flexibility in exploring various cut options, complex visual and audio synchronization, and the integration of graphic elements to support the storyline. The results of the analysis showed that the author was able to enhance narrative quality and visual aesthetics through the structured application of NLE techniques. This work not only conveys a social message but also creates a viewing experience, enabling the message to be persuasively received by the audience.
