Abstract

Biomass is alternative energy. This research was conducted to determine the effect of biomass type and size on the gasification process using a downdraft gasifier. Sengon and mahogany woods were used as the feedstock. The study began by conducting a proximate test of biomass feedstock to find out its properties. Than the gasification process was studied by using two sizes of biomass i.e. wood chips and blocks. Each experiment was carried out for 90 minutes and 10 kg of biomass. The air was supplied at 3 m/s. The results showed that the type and size of biomass affected the gasification temperatures, flame characteristics, and residues. Sengon wood chips provided the highest gasification temperature of 1239°C in the oxidation zone with a flame duration of 77 minutes and residue of 9.1 wt.%. For mahogany wood chips in the sequence were 1220°C, 68 minutes and 16.25 wt.%. Meanwhile for wood chips mixture of sengon and mahogany gave the flame duration of 55 minutes and residue of 15.65 wt.%. Overall, it can be concluded that under the investigated condition, a sengon wood chip was found to be the most suitable biomass for the downdraft gasifier used in this work.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to investigate the effect of condenser cooling fan addition and airflow rate on the performance of Atmospheric Water Generator (AWG). In this work, humid air from the environment was supplied into AWG at 15 lpm. Then, it was condensed in the system with and without using a condenser cooling fan. The fan airflow rate also varied from 0.09 m3/s to 0.16 m3/s in order to better assess AWG performance. The results showed that the use of a condenser cooling fan can improve the Coefficient of Performance (COP) and the efficiency of the Atmospheric Water Generator. The average value of COPactual of 2.499 and the highest efficiency of 79.07% was achieved by an Atmosphere Water Generator equipped with a condenser cooling fan at an airflow rate of 0.16 m3/s.

Abstract

Evaporation boat waste contains Boron Nitride (BN) and Titanium Diboride (TiB2) so that it has electrically conductive properties with high resistance to chemicals and heat. In addition, the combination of these materials has high thermal conductivity properties with a melting point of up to 2700oC and has an oxidation resistance of up to 1000oC so it is very suitable if applied to crucibles, or refractory. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mixing duration on the hardness of the crucible material made from a mixture of evaporation boats waste, kaolin and fire mortar SK-34. The mixing process of evaporation boats waste, kaolin and refractory cement is carried out using a mixer machine with a duration of 30, 60 and 90 minutes. The compaction process was carried out on the mixture with a force of 40 kg/cm2 to produce a cylindrical test specimen. After seven days, the specimens were sintered at 1000oC for 2 hours. The hardness test process was carried out with the FM-800 microhardness tester machine to determine the effect of mixing duration on the final product hardness. The highest hardness of 37,2 HV was found in the final product with a mixing duration of 90 minutes. The hardness of final product is increasing with an increase in mixing duration.

Abstract

Steam boilers fueled by biodiesel and coal are one of the industrial activities that still produce exhaust emissions such as Total Particulate (PM), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), Opacity, Nitrogen Oxide (NOx), and Carbon Monoxide (CO) which is very dangerous for public health and the environment. Therefore, analysis of flue gas emissions in steam boiler installations equipped with filtration devices (cyclones, water scrubbers, and electrostatic precipitators) before being discharged into the environment is of important. Exhaust gas emission was measured by using a gas analyzer, smoke tester, and portable quality air monitor. The results of exhaust gas emission analysis showed that the average concentration of PM, SO2, and CO did not meet the specified emission quality standard thresholds, exempted for opacity concentration for both steam boilers fueled with biodiesel and coal. It is suspected that this is caused by the sub optimal performance of the filtration equipment used in this system. Therefore, regular maintenance is required, and if necessary, a redesign of the entire system can be carried out.
