Abstract

Despite growing recognition of communicative competence in second language acquisition, Arabic instruction in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) often remains focused on grammar, overlooking pragmatic competence. This gap limits students’ ability to use Arabic appropriately in real-life interactions, particularly in directive and assertive forms of speech. This study addresses that gap by exploring how students at Darul Lughah Waddirosatil Islamiyah in Madura perform Arabic speech acts within an immersive environment. The research aims to analyze the variation and functions of directive and assertive speech acts and how these contribute to effective communication and pedagogy. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis involving 30 advanced-level students. Results show that students strategically adjust their speech based on roles, social hierarchy, and interactional context often using indirect forms and politeness markers. These patterns emerged naturally through immersion rather than formal instruction. The findings highlight the importance of integrating pragmatics into Arabic curricula, emphasizing culturally and contextually appropriate communication. Such integration promotes not only language fluency but also socio-religious sensitivity, aligning Arabic education with both communicative and ethical goals.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the potential of Arabic football commentary as an authentic pedagogical tool to enhance learners’ stylistic competence in Arabic. Traditional teaching methods often emphasize memorization, which limits spontaneous and expressive use of language. To address this gap, the research aims to explore how football commentary can foster learners’ awareness and application of Arabic stylistic expression. Using a qualitative pedagogical case study, data were collected from 30 undergraduate students of Arabic Language and Literature at Universitas Islam Internasional Darullughah Wadda’wah. The research process consisted of three stages: analysis of professional commentators’ rhetorical features, practice sessions where participants produced their own commentary, and focused group discussions to capture learners’ perceptions. Findings reveal that this method improved students’ sports-related vocabulary, rhetorical skills such as metaphor and hyperbole, and overall motivation. Challenges included the rapid pace of commentary and dialectal interference, which require structured instructor guidance. The novelty of this study lies in systematically integrating football commentary into language teaching, transforming a popular cultural practice into a structured pedagogical approach. It is suggested that Arabic curricula incorporate authentic commentary activities to enrich stylistic learning and inspire more engaging classroom practices.

Abstract

This study examines Arabic vocabulary retention from a cross-cultural psycholinguistic perspective involving learners in Indonesia and Malaysia. Recognizing that rote memorization rarely ensures long-term retention, the research integrates association, mnemonics, visualization, and a novel strategy Familiarity-Enhanced Recall to enhance recall and reduce anxiety. Employing a mixed-method design, 90 participants (30 from Pondok Pesantren Darullughah Wadda’wah, Indonesia, and 60 from Maktab Mahmud Yan, Malaysia) completed pre-tests, post-tests, and interviews. Results showed significant improvement, with Familiarity-Enhanced Recall linking new words to familiar routines, cultural practices, or personal hobbies emerging as the most effective approach. Learners expressed greater confidence, motivation, and emotional engagement, as vocabulary became personally meaningful and easier to recall. The findings underscore that psycholinguistic strategies, when contextualized within learners’ cultural experiences, foster more sustainable and engaging vocabulary acquisition, offering valuable insights for Arabic language pedagogy in diverse educational settings.

Abstract

Arabic language education in pesantren-based Islamic universities increasingly emphasizes self-regulated learning to encourage authentic language use beyond formal classrooms. However, empirical evidence on how learners independently sustain Arabic across social, academic, and digital domains remains limited, particularly in Islamic higher education contexts. This study examines the extent of self-regulated Arabic usage and identifies motivational, social, and digital factors supporting learner autonomy among university students in Indonesia. Using a convergent mixed-methods design, data were collected from 60 undergraduate students at Darullughah Wadda’wah International Islamic University, a pesantren-based institution in Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia, through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The findings reveal that 65% of students use Arabic daily in informal interaction, religious activities, and digital communication. Advanced learners show higher autonomous engagement (78.6%) compared to intermediate (64.0%) and beginner students (52.4%). Integrative motivation, peer support, and engagement with Arabic digital religious content significantly predict independent language use, while spontaneous oral production remains the main challenge. The study concludes that Arabic functions as a lived linguistic, academic, and spiritual identity practice in pesantren-based Islamic higher education. Practically, it recommends strengthening peer-supported language immersion and Arabic-based digital environments to sustain learner autonomy beyond classroom instruction.
