Abstract

The utilization of natural ingredients in cosmetic applications is increasing due to public awareness of their safety and minimal side effects. This study aims to evaluate and compare the antioxidant activity of facial serums containing Hibiscus sabdariffa (roselle) and Punica granatum (pomegranate) extracts. Physical quality tests were conducted, including organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, specific gravity, and viscosity evaluations. Organoleptic observations showed both formulations had stable characteristics, including brown color, typical herbal aroma, and thick consistency without changes during storage. Homogeneity testing indicated no phase separation or sedimentation. The specific gravity of both serums was 1.02 g/mL, meeting SNI standards. Viscosity values were 2840 cps for roselle serum and 2540 cps for pomegranate serum, indicating appropriate consistency for topical use. The pH values were 3.75 ± 0.006 and 3.94 ± 0.017, respectively. Antioxidant activity was analyzed using the DPPH method. IC₅₀ values were 6000 ppm for roselle extract and 359.163 ± 0.437 ppm for pomegranate extract, indicating very weak antioxidant activity for anti-aging applications. This low activity may be influenced by extract concentration, degradation during formulation, storage conditions, and environmental exposure. While both serum formulations successfully met the SNI 19-4339-1996 physical quality requirements for topical use, their antioxidant efficacy was insufficient for potent anti-aging applications. This study contributes a critical baseline for natural serum formulation, identifying that physical stability does not guarantee antioxidant potency. These findings provide a necessary foundation for future research to focus on optimizing extract concentrations and stabilizing bioactive compounds against degradation during the formulation process. Keywords: Antioxidant activity, DPPH assay, Facial serum, Pomegranate extract, Roselle extract.

Abstract

Improving the quality of Islamic education in higher education institutions is a strategic necessity to produce graduates who excel in knowledge, character, and morals. However, research indicates that quality remains relatively low due to curricula that are unresponsive to modern developments, lecturer-centered teaching methods, and limited learning facilities. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the Islamic education curriculum and quality improvement strategies through a qualitative library research approach, analyzing scientific journals, academic books, and educational regulations. The results show that strengthening educational quality can only be achieved if the curriculum serves as an integrative axis coordinating teaching quality and facility provision. The resulting integration model consists of three pillars: competency-based curriculum revision, enhanced lecturer competence through interactive pedagogical innovation, and investment in technology-based learning facilities. These pillars form a holistic learning ecosystem to produce graduates who are scientifically competitive, technologically adaptive, and spiritually grounded. These findings confirm that curriculum reform must be accompanied by a transformation of pedagogy and infrastructure to meet contemporary needs without losing Islamic values.

Abstract

Carbon dots (CDs) are carbon-based nanomaterials smaller than 10 nm that exhibit strong fluorescence, excellent chemical stability, and environmental friendliness, making them promising candidates for diverse applications. This paper discusses the synthesis methods of carbon dots, particularly bottom-up techniques such as pyrolysis and hydrothermal synthesis, using eco-friendly precursors like agricultural and food waste. CDs are characterized by techniques including FTIR, UV-Vis, and TEM to reveal their structural and optical properties. CDs have various applications, including heavy metal sensing, bioimaging, and antimicrobial agents. The key advantages of CDs include low production costs, abundant raw materials, and high biocompatibility. This study highlights the great potential of CDs in supporting environmentally friendly technologies and encourages further research on their functionalization and future applications.

Abstract

Abstract. Widyaningrum T, Febrianti N, Prastowo I, Saifuddin MF, Permadi A. 2022. Exploration, screening and identification of indigenous yeast from some palm juices for bioethanol production. Biodiversitas 23: 3984-3990. The major energy sources usually employed are originated mainly from fossil which can run out. Therefore, the creation of ecologically beneficial and long-lasting forms of alternative energy sources, such as bioethanol, is an absolutely necessary. This study aimed to explore, screen and to identify indigenous yeasts from some palm juices for bioethanol production. The isolates were screened in coconut water media for the degree of bioethanol production, the content of reducing sugar based on a DNS method, and the cell number based on optical density (600 nm). Furthermore, identification was performed using ITS and candidates of the highest bioethanol-producing ability including A3A, A11E from Arenga pinnata, K1C1, K1A, K2C from Cocos nucifera L., N3E, N3D, N1A from Nypa fruticans, S1A, and S2D from B. flabellifer L were obtained. The respective bioethanol contents were 13.4%, 12.8%, 13%, 16%, 14.2%, 13.2%, 12%, 12.6%, 14.4%, and 13.35%. The results showed that the isolates of A3A and N3E were similar to those of Pichia deserticola CBS 7119T. Meanwhile, the isolates of K1A and S1A were similar to that of Pichia manshurica CBS 240T and Candida tropicalis ZA 021T.

Abstract

The growth of the textile industry in Indonesia contributes positively to the economy, but simultaneously generates hazardous wastewater containing synthetic dyes and persistent organic compounds. The primary challenge in treating this effluent is fouling of cellulose acetate (CA) membranes, which reduces filtration efficiency and shortens operational lifespan due to pollutant accumulation. This study aims to evaluate various CA membrane modification strategies to enhance their physicochemical characteristics and antifouling properties. The discussion covers the integration of additives, including metal oxides (TiO?, ZnO), polymers (PEG, chitosan), and carbon-based materials (GO, CNT), which have been shown to form a stable hydration layer on the membrane surface. The review results indicate that these modifications significantly increase hydrophilicity, improve dye rejection up to 85 percent, and achieve a flux recovery ratio exceeding 90 percent. In conclusion, CA membrane modification via surface engineering is an effective solution for enhancing filtration performance and improving the sustainability of textile wastewater treatment.

Abstract

This research will explore the potential for utilizing wild amaranth (Amaranthus dubius) seeds, which are abundant and have not been utilized in Indonesia. This research will focus on optimizing the amaranth seed oil extraction process using the response surface method and the characteristics of the oil produced from amaranth seeds. The solvent used in this research is a biobased green solvent, terpenes. This research aims to explore the potential of utilizing wild amaranth seeds by optimizing the oil extraction process using a biobased green solvent, terpenes, through the response surface methodology (RSM). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results indicate that the terpenes solvent contains various terpenoids such as α-pinene, β-pinene, and camphene. By applying ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and optimizing the critical process parameters (liquid-to-solid ratio, extraction temperature, and extraction time) through a Box-Behnken RSM design, the maximum oil yield was achieved under environmentally friendly conditions. The optimum condition was reached at a solvent-to-solid ratio of 5.13 ml/0.1 g, a temperature of 49.39 °C, and an extraction time of 47 minutes. With these optimal parameters, the predicted oil yield was 2.04%. The optimized extraction not only delivered a high-quality oil-rich extract but also minimized solvent residue, energy consumption, and hazardous emissions.
