Abstract

Teacher communication is critical in mathematics learning, influencing students’ understanding, engagement, and academic success. This study explores the communication practices of novice, intermediate, and senior mathematics teachers when teaching trigonometric comparisons in right triangles. Using a qualitative exploratory design, classroom observations and interviews were conducted with three vocational high school teachers in Keerom Regency, Papua Province, Indonesia, focusing on five communication aspects: clarity, assertiveness, responsiveness, relevance, and presentation style manipulation. The findings reveal significant differences among the teacher groups. Novice teachers exhibited excellent communication by integrating prerequisite knowledge, employing visual aids, and connecting lessons to real-world applications. Intermediate teachers demonstrated structured but conventional communication methods, focusing on content delivery with limited interactivity. Senior teachers, while experienced and accurate, relied heavily on traditional lecture-based approaches and displayed limited responsiveness to student needs. This study highlights the strengths of novice teachers’ student-centered strategies, such as group activities and guided discovery, which enhanced student engagement and comprehension. The research underscores the need for professional development programs to promote innovative teaching practices across all experience levels. Future studies should examine how professional growth and contextual factors influence teacher communication, contributing to improved mathematics learning outcomes.       Keywords: teacher communication, vocational school, trigonometry, teaching experience. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i4.pp1854-1869

Abstract

Abstract: Students' Conjectures on Open Classical Analogy Problem: Expanding or Narrowing?. Objectives: This study aims to describe students' mathematical conjecture in the context of open classical analogy problem. Methods: This descriptive research describes students' conjectural profiles using open classical analogies. Data were collected from the responses of 68 students. Data analyzed using constructor example, process, and quality of the conjecture. Findings: Results show that the example of constructing the conjecture has not paid attention to all possible cases, while the process of the conjecture used by students was from simple to more expanding or narrowing. Some of the proposed conjecture quality does not include the necessary constraints, and some include unnecessary limitations. Students can add to statements that sharpen the conjecture proposed previously. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that in the construction of conjectures in the context of an open classical analogy, students involve their critical thinking skills. Keywords: conjecture, example, open classical analogy, process, quality of conjecture.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i1.202419

Abstract

Spontaneous problem posing is a basic concept of spontaneous mathematical thinking and science learning. Students generate problems without systematic encouragement and pose problems based on the student's desire to develop their skills. As a result, they can serve as important markers of constructive mathematical and science engagement, particularly affective engagement, for problem solvers and their classroom communities. We used a qualitative approach to analyze student characteristics, especially in the affective domain, when presenting random problems. We used an observational approach and experience sampling in each class to observe students' engagement in spontaneous problem posing both individually and in groups. The findings revealed that each student showed different characteristics when presenting problems suddenly (spontaneous problem posing). The submission of the first subject problem was categorized as problem-as-exercise, satisfying the characteristics of spontaneous originality, where constructive emotional experiences impressed more on the teacher, while negative emotional experiences impressed more on oneself (self), classmates, and mathematical activities. The submission of the second subject problem is classified as a problematic problem, fulfilling the characteristics of spontaneous originality. Negative emotional experiences are more visible in me (myself), while constructive emotional experiences are more visible in teachers, classmates, and math activities

Abstract

This research aimed to present a unique approach by integrating the Tordauk jerpara tel tradition of the Aru community into formal mathematics learning, describing the relationship between local cultural practices and mathematics concepts. The objectives were to identify the mathematics values contained in tradition and design a strategy for integrating the values into the elementary school curriculum to improve conceptual understanding and global mathematics literacy. A qualitative approach with an ethnomathematics design was adopted, additionally 20 third-grade elementary school students in Aru Regency were selected as participants. Data were collected through observation, role playing, interviews, and document analysis. The results showed the Tordauk jerpara tel tradition contained the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, ratios, averages, and modulo arithmetic, which could be systematically mapped into the formal elementary school mathematics. The five-stage learning strategy, namely contextual exploration, mathematics identification, formalization, contextual reflection, and extension, can increased student engagement, abstraction ability, thinking flexibility, and internalization of social values. This research made theoretical contributions to ethnomathematics and culture-based mathematics education, while also proposing an adaptable strategy implemented in international contexts. Practical implications include the development of contextual with further research directions focused on strategy validation across cultural contexts.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the characteristics of the transformational activities of Indonesian students in resolving problems based on cognitive conflict. The research employed a phenomenological approach with five students as subjects. The research instruments included tests and interview guidelines, and the analysis was conducted using the constant comparative method. Change-based activities are a good way to solve cognitive conflict issues, including full rule-based unexpected results, full rule-based matching problem parts, incomplete rule-based unexpected results, and incomplete rule-based matching problem parts. Exploring these characteristics serves as a foundation for instructors to enhance the quality of instructional design. Practically, a profound understanding of these characteristics can provide a solid foundation for educators to enhance their instructional design quality. By exploring and comprehending how students address cognitive conflict, instructors can design more effective learning experiences that align with the student's needs.
