Abstract

Mathematics is not only related about how to solve problems and provide conclusions, but also as a tool to communicate ideas clearly, precisely and briefly. Through mathematical communication, the teacher can see students'abilities in solving problems. The purpose of this research is to describe the mathematical errors of reflective student communication in solving open-ended problems. The research subjects consisted of 5 students of Boyolangu 1 Junior High School who had reflective cognitive style. Data collection is done by combining the results of data of  mathematical communication test and interviews. The mathematical communication test given is related to triangles and quadrilateral material. Test results were analyzed using mathematical communication indicators, namely: (1) giving clear responses, (2) making diagrams / sketches, (3) communicating mathematical ideas effectively to others, and (4) presenting logical arguments that support answers. The results of data analysis show that students only write some of the completeness of the answers, students are completeless in writing the size of a sketch, students have not conveyed mathematical ideas using complete sentences, and students have not been able to make logical arguments to support students' answers.Keywords: Mathematical communication, reflective cognitive style, open-ended

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mendeskripsikan bentuk  kesalahan penalaran matematis siswa dalam menyelesaikan masalah pola bilangan. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif deskripstif. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 1 Pogalan Trenggalek yang dipilih berdasarkan kesalahan dalam tes diagnostik dan kemampuan komunikasi. Data penelitian dikumpulkan melalui tes dan wawancara. Data penelitian ini adalah lembar hasil jawaban siswa melalui tes awal (tes diagnostik). Aktivitas analisis data adalah (1) mengolah dan mempersiapkan data untuk dianalisis, (2) membaca keseluruhan data, (3) menganalisis lebih detail dengan meng – coding data, (4) menerapkan proses coding, (5) menunjukkan bagaimana deskripsi dan tema-tema ini akan disajikan kembali dalam laporan kualitatif serta (6) memaknai data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kesulitan yang dialami subjek SP I, SP II, dan SP III dalam menyelesaikan masalah pola bilangan yaitu (1) mendeteksi keteraturan dalam suatu pola, (2) merumuskan pola dari susunan-susunan bola, dan (3) menentukan banyaknya bola pada suku ke-n.

Abstract

Metacognition is one important component in cognitive function and cognitive development that has a close relationship with students' problem solving abilities. One factor that can affect student metacognition but is rarely considered in mathematics learning is student cognitive style. The purpose of this study is to describe the metacognition of field-independent cognitive style students in solving mathematical problems based on Polya's stages. This research is a descriptive qualitative study using a problem solving test instrument and interview guidelines to collect data. The subjects in this study were 2 field-independent cognitive style students. The subject was asked to work on mathematical problem solving problems and then interviewed based on the results of student work. The results showed that students' metacognition awareness, regulation, and evaluation emerged during the problem solving stage. This shows that metacognition can help students with field-independent cognitive style in solving problems.

Abstract

This study discusses the difficulties of students in solving covariational problems. The study was conducted on 25 students with 6th-semester studies who had completed calculus courses. Students are asked to verbalize what they think while solving problems (think aloud). Next, students are interviewed with an in-depth interview technique to explore the thinking process. The results showed 88% of students had difficulties when given covariational problems. Students are familiar with mathematical problems with counting operations. When given a problem without information, students experience difficulties.

Abstract

Salah satu kemampuan berpikir yang penting untuk dikuasai oleh siswa adalah kemampuan berpikir analitis, karena dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi siswa sehingga mereka dapat mengembangkan kemampuan mereka sendiri. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kemampuan berpikir analitis siswa SMP dalam memecahkan masalah matematis melalui pemberian tes pemecahan masalah. Tiga siswa SMP kelas VII diambil secara acak untuk mewakili siswa berkemampuan analitis. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa ketiga siswa tersebut masih belum dapat memecahkan masalah dengan sempurna. Sehingga tiap-tiap subjek yang dipilih adalah siswa yang dapat mendiskripsikan masing-masing indikator  kemampuan berpikir analitis: differentiating, organizing, dan atributing. S1 tidak menunjukkan perbedaan dalam menjawab masalah walaupun telah memecahkan masalah matematika, S2 tidak hati-hati dalam mencari FPB, dan S3 dapat mengorganisir masalah tetapi hanya berpikir sampai jumlah dua angka dibagi menjadi kelas yang sama. Kemampuan berpikir analitis siswa masih kurang.

Abstract

Reflective thinking begins with repeated confusion and evaluation to solve a problem. There are four aspects to reflective thinking, namely techniques, monitoring, insight, and conceptualization. However, the problem-solvers’ reflective thinking characteristics in mathematical problems have not been discovered. The study describes the reflective thinking characteristics of proficient mathematics prospective teachers based on four aspects. The qualitative research was conducted at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta with a total of 64 reflective thinkers. Data collected by test, observation sheets, and interview methods. The tests were administered twice. The instruments developed has been through the validation process and declared valid. Data analyzed through the stages of reduction, presentation, and verification. We successfully conclude that proficient mathematics prospective teachers have complete and consistent reflective thinking characteristics. Further research can be focused on the characteristics of reflective thinking based on another aspect.

Abstract

Pertanyaan siswa penting untuk keterlibatan dalam proses pembelajaran serta untuk merangsang pemahaman tentang informasi baru, sehingga perlu menjadi perhatian dan seharusnya dibina khusus oleh guru. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan pertanyaan-pertanyaan tertulis siswa dalam pembelajaran menggunakan pendekatan saintifik pada materi Teorema Pythagoras. Instrumen penelitian berupa LKS dengan pendekatan saintifik, lembar observasi beserta rubrik penskoran kualitas pertanyaan siswa dan lembar wawancara. Subyek penelitian adalah 32 siswa kelas 8A MTsN 9 Banyuwangi. Penelitian berlangsung dalam empat kali tatap muka pembelajaran. Hasil yang didapat dari penelitian ini adalah distribusi kualitas pertanyaan-pertanyaan tertulis berdasarkan tingkat kognitif dan kategori kemampuan bertanya siswa dalam pembelajaran menggunakan pendekatan saintifik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pertanyaan-pertanyaan tertulis yang dirumuskan siswa selama kegiatan pembelajaran terdistribusi dengan level kognitif C1 sebesar 29%, level kognitif C2 sebesar 21%, level kognitif C3 sebesar 23%, level kognitif C4 sebesar 19% dan level kognitif C5 sebesar 8%. Tidak ada siswa yang mampu menyusun pertanyaan pada tingkat kognitif C6. Sedangkan dari hasil analisis pertanyaan individual siswa secara terpisah menunjukkan kategori kemampuan siswa dalam menyusun pertanyaan terbagi menjadi 43,75% berkemampuan rendah, 46,88% berkemampuan sedang dan 9,37% berkemampuan tinggi. Sedikitnya nilai prosentase siswa dengan kemampuan tinggi, menunjukkan bahwa perlu upaya guru untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bertanya siswa.  Kata kunci: profil pertanyaan, kemampuan bertanya, pembelajaran saintifik Abstract: Student questions are important for involvement in the learning process and to stimulate understanding of new information, so they need to be paid attention to and should be specifically fostered by the teacher. This study aims to describe students' written questions in learning using a scientific approach to the Pythagorean Theorem material. Research instruments in the form of worksheets with a scientific approach, observation sheets along with a rubric scoring the quality of student questions, and interview sheets. The research subjects were 32 students of 8A grade of MTsN 9 Banyuwangi. The research took place in four face-to-face learning. The results obtained from this study are the quality of written questions based on the cognitive level and the category of students' ability to ask questions in learning using a scientific approach. The results showed that the written questions formulated by students during the learning activities were distributed with a cognitive level of C1 of 29%, cognitive level C2 of 21%, cognitive level of C3 of 23%, cognitive level of C4 of 19%, and cognitive level of C5 of 8%. None of the students were able to construct questions at the cognitive level C6. Meanwhile, the results of the analysis of individual student questions separately showed that the categories of students' abilities in composing questions were divided into 43.75% low ability, 46.88% medium ability, and 9.37% high ability. The low percentage value of students with high abilities indicates that the teacher must improve the students' questioning abilities. Keywords: question profile, questioning ability, scientific learning

Abstract

Abstract: This research is a case study that explores the error in concept construction of undergraduate students’ with very negative mathematical identity. The construction was examined through the APOS theory. The student participating in the study was a student in the accounting department. Results showed that the student with very negative mathematical identity did not think much when choosing the most suitable measure of central tendency for a particular data. The student did not take into account the existence of outlier and mode, how the mean involves every data element, and whether the data distribution was normal or not. Abstrak: Penelitian ini merupakan studi kasus yang mengeksplor kesalahan konstruksi konsep mahasiswa dengan identitas matematis yang sangat negatif. Konstruksi konsep diteliti menggunakan kerangka APOS. Mahasiswa yang berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini merupakan mahasiswa pada jurusan akuntansi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa dengan identitas matematis yang sangat rendah tidak berpikir banyak ketika memilih ukuran pemusatan yang sesuai untuk data yang diberikan. Subjek tidak mempertimbangkan eksistensi modus dan outlier, bagaimana mean melibatkan semua elemen data, dan apakah datanya berdistribusi normal atau tidak.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to describe the mistakes made by students in solving logarithmic inequality problems. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The research subjects were high school students who had obtained logarithmic inequality material. Student errors are classified into conceptual errors, procedural errors, and computational errors. Based on data analysis conceptual errors that occur are errors using the logarithmic inequality properties, errors in the concept of defining logarithms, and errors in the use of logarithmic properties. Whereas procedural errors, namely errors in completing algebraic inequalities, errors in determining completion of definitions of logarithms, and errors determine the completion of the algebraic inequality system. The computational errors that occur are errors in performing operations counting numbers including errors in negative signs.Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan kesalahan yang dilakukan siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal pertidaksamaan logaritma. Jenis penelitian ini adalah kualitatif deskriptif. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa SMA yang telah memperoleh materi pertidaksamaan logaritma. Kesalahan siswa diklasifikasikan menjadi kesalahan konseptual, kesalahan prosedural, dan kesalahan komputasi. Berdasarkan analisis data kesalahan konseptual yang terjadi adalah kesalahan menggunakan sifat pertidaksamaan logaritma, kesalahan konsep keterdefinisian logaritma, dan kesalahan penggunaan sifat logaritma. Kesalahan prosedural yaitu kesalahan menyelesaikan pertidaksamaan aljabar, kesalahan menentukan selesaian syarat keterdefinisian logaritma, dan kesalahan menentukan selesaian sistem pertidaksamaan aljabar. Adapun kesalahan komputasi yang terjadi yaitu kesalahan dalam melakukan operasi hitung bilangan termasuk kesalahan dalam tanda negatif.

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive qualitative research aims to describe the form of mathematical representation that arises when students understand the relationship between changes in the coefficient of trigonometric functions with their graphical functions through GeoGebra media. Students in a class of 30 students are selected as research subjects and given a Student Worksheet. From the results of the student's work, it can be seen that there are 3 types of the tendency of representation that are used by students to complete Worksheets. Of the 3 types of trends, each student is taken 1 person who will further discuss the results of his work randomly because it is considered to represent the work of other students. The results showed that students represented Geogebra's appearance in 3 forms namely verbal representation, mathematical expression representation, and visual representation.Abstrak: Tujuan penelitian kualitatif deskriptif adalah untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk representasi matematis yang muncul ketika mahasiswa memahami hubungan antara perubahan koefisien fungsi trigonometri dengan grafik fugsinya lewat media GeoGebra. Mahasiswa dalam satu kelas yang berjumlah 30 mahasiswa dipilih sebagai subjek penelitian dan diberikan Lembar Kerja Mahasiswa. Dari hasil pekerjaan mahasiswa tersebut, terlihat ada tiga tipe kecenderungan bentuk representasi yang digunakan mahasiswa untuk menyelesaikan Lembar Kerja. Dari tiga tipe kecenderungan tersebut masing-masing diambil satu mahasiswa yang akan dibahas lebih lanjut hasil pekerjaanya secara random karena dinilai dapat mewakili hasil pekerjaan mahasiswa yang lain. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa  mahasiswa merepresentasikan tampilan Geogebra dalam tiga bentuk, yakni representasi verbal, representasi ekpresi matematis, dan representasi visual.
