Abstract

This research aimed to describe the characteristics of the transformational activities of Indonesian students in resolving problems based on cognitive conflict. The research employed a phenomenological approach with five students as subjects. The research instruments included tests and interview guidelines, and the analysis was conducted using the constant comparative method. Change-based activities are a good way to solve cognitive conflict issues, including full rule-based unexpected results, full rule-based matching problem parts, incomplete rule-based unexpected results, and incomplete rule-based matching problem parts. Exploring these characteristics serves as a foundation for instructors to enhance the quality of instructional design. Practically, a profound understanding of these characteristics can provide a solid foundation for educators to enhance their instructional design quality. By exploring and comprehending how students address cognitive conflict, instructors can design more effective learning experiences that align with the student's needs.

Abstract

Truth-seeking and open-mindedness are core dispositions of critical thinking, particularly in the context of mathematical problem solving. This study examines the critical thinking dispositions of prospective mathematics teachers when solving problems containing contradictory information and incomplete data. Specifically, it investigates behavioral tendencies related to truth-seeking and open-mindedness.This qualitative exploratory study involved 15 prospective mathematics teachers. Data were collected through written tests, direct observations, and semi-structured interviews. To enhance validity, methodological triangulation was employed by comparing findings across these three data sources to ensure consistency and credibility. The findings indicate that the participants generally did not demonstrate strong truth-seeking dispositions. Most participants failed to question the validity or completeness of the information presented and tended to respond procedurally without critically examining contradictions or missing data. These results suggest that procedural competence does not necessarily reflect the presence of critical thinking dispositions. The study highlights the need for instructional strategies that explicitly foster truth-seeking and open-mindedness in mathematics teacher education.

Abstract

This study explores elementary students’ mathematical connection skills in solving problems based on their cognitive styles. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed to explain how reflective and impulsive students approach mathematical problem-solving. The research was conducted at SDN 4 Sumberbendo, Tulungagung, with 21 students initially tested using the Matching Familiar Figure Test (MFFT) to identify cognitive styles. This group selected six students (three reflective and three impulsive) as the primary subjects for detailed analysis. Data were collected through mathematical connection tests and semi-structured interviews, focusing on indicators of mathematising, representation, reasoning, communication, and strategy use. The findings reveal distinct differences between reflective and impulsive students. Reflective students demonstrated systematic and careful approaches, stronger skills in representation and reasoning, and better use of mathematical concepts such as least common multiples (LCM) and greatest common divisors (GCD). However, they often struggled to connect mathematical ideas with real-life contexts, such as percentage discounts or distribution problems. In contrast, impulsive students tended to answer quickly with less accuracy, often neglecting logical justification, although some succeeded in solving concrete problems like LCM tasks. Overall, the study highlights that cognitive styles significantly influence the quality of mathematical connections. The findings underscore the need for differentiated instructional strategies: reflective students should be supported to improve efficiency, while impulsive students require guidance to enhance accuracy and systematic reasoning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the proportional reasoning of fourth-grade students in solving missing value problems in multiplication and division. Using a descriptive qualitative design, the study involved 26 fourth-grade students at SDN Lowokwaru 5 Malang City. Data collection methods included tests, observations, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that students demonstrate better proportional reasoning in multiplication contexts through scaling strategies, where they can identify multiplicative factors and apply them consistently. However, students encounter greater difficulties in division contexts, particularly in unit rate reasoning. Most students still rely on additive strategies when solving division problems, indicating they remain at the pre-proportional stage. The analysis shows five reasoning stages: understanding the situation and identifying quantities, forming ratio representations, identifying multiplicative structures, applying solution strategies, and evaluating ratio equivalence. Students who successfully form structured representations (tables, fractions, arrows) tend to reach multiplicative reasoning, while those using unstructured representations remain trapped in additive patterns. This research provides important insights for developing teaching strategies that strengthen conceptual understanding of proportional relationships at the elementary school level.

Abstract

This study compares the effectiveness of gamification and the flipped classroom on secondary school students’ mathematics achievement through a systematic review and meta-analysis. The synthesis follows PRISMA 2020 and includes 16 quasi-experimental studies published between 2015 and 2025, comprising 5 gamification studies and 11 flipped classroom studies. Effect sizes were calculated using Hedges’ g and pooled using a random-effects model with the Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman (HKSJ) adjustment to accommodate heterogeneity. The results show that gamification has a small-to-moderate positive point estimate (g = 0.437), but the confidence interval crosses zero under high heterogeneity (I² ≈ 87%), indicating that the evidence for benefit is uncertain. The flipped classroom shows a moderate-to-large pooled effect (g = 1.009) with a significant confidence interval, although heterogeneity is also high (I² ≈ 86%). Subgroup analysis found a significant difference between the two approaches, but meta-regression indicates that model type is not a significant predictor after between-study variation is accounted for. Overall, the findings suggest that effectiveness is design-sensitive and influenced more by implementation quality and context than by the instructional label alone.

Abstract

Reasoning is an important foundation in solving mathematical problems. Reasoning is a thinking process that allows students to understand concepts, connect ideas, and draw logical conclusions. This study aimed to explore students’ mathematical reasoning in Discovery Learning supported by gamification media on the Pythagorean Theorem. The study used a qualitative case study approach involving two eighth-grade students at a junior high school in Malang. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and mathematical reasoning tests, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings revealed that Discovery Learning, supported by gamification media, created an interactive learning experience that enabled students to gradually explore concepts in context. High-ability students demonstrated strong reasoning skills, including analyzing problems, constructing arguments, applying inductive and deductive reasoning, making generalizations, and drawing conclusions. Low-ability students also showed improvement in several reasoning indicators, particularly in analyzing problems, applying deductive reasoning, and developing mathematical arguments during the learning process.
