Abstract

This study investigates the effects of Single-Sex and Co-educational classrooms on English learning outcomes. This study is a causal-comparative study in ex post facto design. The sample is three classes consisting of 73 students (boy and girl-single-sex classes and a co-educational class) from a private secondary school in Central Java, Indonesia. An integrated English test was used, equating the 2013 curriculum and CEFR for English. It tested four skills in English consisting of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Expert judgments have already checked the instrument through face validity. Item internal consistency from all skills was good, and the reliability was too, in a good category. This study indicates that organizing a Single-sex classroom in the English learning process has a positive and significant effect on English achievement. Being in a Single-Sex classroom benefitted the students in their outcomes in learning English. This study also implies that teachers, especially English teachers, must understand their students' learning strategies to implement the appropriate learning strategies. It is because male and female students learn something in different ways

Abstract

This research generally aimed to describe the characteristic of the ability of Pre-service and In-service TPE participants using the Item Response Theory, IRT. The research subject comprised 516 participants divided into 239 participants of the Pre-service TPE program and 277 participants of the In-service TPE program using the purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through the technique of observation and documentation. In estimating the item parameter and ability parameter, the IRT model polytomous was implemented, which was furthermore described. This finding shows that the assessor could directly recognize the position of the ability of students in the TPE program based on the item characteristic and the ability between the highest and the lowest grade in the ability scale, so this finding did not only support the implementation of TPE program in Indonesia, but also its applicability was expected to revise the assessment of teachers’ performance, the supervision of teachers, field teaching practice, and the assessment in the other teaching fields, so it could be used as an evaluation in revising the assessment model.

Abstract

The concept of mental workload is fully used and leads to various theoretical and methodological models. For this purpose, we are conducted in the same way as a systematic review for understanding the concept and a factor that identifies work and work situations that affect personal tasks, or mental workload field. A systematic review was obtained from scientific papers issued from 2010-to 2021. Mental workload is multidimensional, so that a conceptual definition of mental workload should therefore integrally encompass the most elementary dimensions of mental workload. In general, most factors affected mental workloads, including working environments, individual differences, temporal pressure, and task difficulty/compliance complexity. Techniques for assessing subjective workloads are popular in several studies because of their ease of use and sensitivity to workload fluctuations. The NASATLX scale is the most common subjective technique and is used in a wide range of fields. Subjective and objective measurements cannot even measure all kinds of factors that affect mental distress. The main difficulty facing researchers is establishing standardized measurements of mental workload and its normal range so that effective comparisons can be made between groups of subjects. These results can provide measurement development recommendations using three approaches: subjective, objective, and behavioral. Keywords: mental workload; measurement; workload factors

Abstract

AbstractIslamic civilization is built upon Islam as a distinctive religion and way of life (dîn). Therefore, the fate of this civilization depends on the religiosity of each Muslim individuals. In this context, an empirical study to map Muslim religiosity becomes necessary. However, studies of Muslim religiosity have been imbued with conceptual as well as epistemological bias due to the adaptation of instruments that were developed based on the Judeo-Christian traditions. This article presents a mapping of Muslim millennial religiosity (306 respondents) using The Muslim Religiosity-Personality Inventory (MRPI), an instrument developed based on the concept of Islamic Worldview. Muslim millennials were chosen because of their strategic demographic position in the development of Islamic civilization. The religiosity of the respondents would be analyzed by referring to two dimensions of Islamic religiosity, namely Islamic Worldview and Religious Personality. Regarding the first dimension, this research revealed that millennials Muslims in Yogyakarta strongly believe in God's active involvement in the affairs of His creatures. However, they lack the understanding of the nature of the involvement. They also have a low score in some crucial aspects of Islamic worldview such as the universality of Islamic teachings and the concept of fithrah (human nature). Regarding the second dimension, they have a high score on personal religiosity, medium score on social religiosity (mu’âmalât), and a low score in ritual religiosity (‘ibâdah mahdhah). This article will further discuss the implications of the findings to the development of Islamic civilization.  Keywords: Religiosity, Millennial Muslim, Islamic Worldview, Religious Personality.

Abstract

This study is a survey research with a cross sectional survey design, which aims to describe the ability of junior high school mathematics teachers in writing HOTS items. The population of this study was junior high school mathematics teachers in Sleman Regency, while the sample was 21 teachers determined by non-stratified random sampling. The sample teachers came from 11 schools totaling 21 teachers.  Each teacher created three HOTS items along with their grids. The question items made by the sample teachers were descriptive questions. The question items that had been prepared were then reviewed by two mathematics teachers from leading junior high schools in Yogyakarta. The next stage after validation is the trial. The number of respondents used was 263 students for testing teacher-made questions, namely 127 students in class VIII and 136 students in class VII. The results showed that the quality of the questions produced by the teacher based on the reliability estimation results obtained an estimate of 0.635 for class VII and 0.416 for class VIII. Likewise, the resulting differentiating power is less than 50% of the questions made by teachers who have differentiating power in the good, good, and very good categories. Factors that cause this include the lack of experience of teachers in writing HOTS questions. This is a special note to familiarize teachers with using HOTS questions in daily tests, UTS, and UAS proportionally so that the experience and ability of teachers to write HOTS questions increases.
