Abstract

This study investigates the role of religion in managing social conflict in rural areas, focusing on the practice of the musyawarah forum in Cimaung, Bandung Regency. Religion is conceptualized not merely as a symbol but as an epistemological framework and symbolic capital that provides social legitimacy in mediation processes. Employing a qualitative approach, this research combined participant observation, in-depth interviews, and NVivo-assisted analysis to capture discursive patterns within the forum’s practices. The findings reveal that religious leaders act as insider mediators, whose moral legitimacy enables them to effectively bridge communal disputes. Qur’anic values such as shura (consultation), rahmah (compassion), afw (forgiveness), and ‘adl (justice) constitute the forum’s foundation, thereby producing forms of positive peace that transcend immediate conflict resolution and foster long-term social cohesion. Challenges faced by the forum include the politicization of religious identity and heavy reliance on charismatic leaders. Practically, this study recommends strengthening the institutional capacity of religious-based forums to ensure inclusivity, sustainability, and resilience in rural peacebuilding. Contribution: This study contributes to the global discourse on religious peacebuilding by providing empirical evidence from rural Indonesia, offering a Qur’an-based musyawarah model as a grassroots peace infrastructure relevant to international debates.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines how religious messages are mediated through meme-based communication on Instagram in Indonesia by comparing Islamic and Buddhist meme accounts. It aims to clarify how different religious traditions adapt their communicative styles to a highly visual, template-driven, and participatory platform environment. Methodology: Using a qualitative netnographic approach, the study analyzed 120 meme posts (60 per account) and 3,847 user comments collected from February–April 2025 from two Indonesian Instagram accounts, @memeislam.id and @sadhu.meme. Data were coded to compare thematic patterns, visual/message framing strategies, circulation routines (posting frequency/timing, captions, hashtags, templates), and observable audience participation traces in comment threads. Findings: The analysis identified four recurring theme categories. @memeislam.id emphasized Scripture Quotation and Universal Moral Values (66.7% combined), while @sadhu.meme foregrounded Religious Satire/Humor (41.7%); both devoted an equal share to Religious Social Criticism (13.3%). Visual packaging differed in how authority and humor were rendered (e.g., short, high-readability scriptural excerpts versus citation-oriented quotation cards, alongside pop-culture meme templates). Circulation practices also diverged, including hashtag density and posting routines. Audience participation traces contrasted “rapid affirmation” (devotional phrases, emoji-only replies, tagging/mentions) with more aphoristic and concept-referential comments; captured examples showed 55,500 likes/36 comments versus 472 likes/25 comments. Implications: Findings suggest that meme-based religious communication can increase accessibility and shareability while also carrying risks of doctrinal compression and interpretive ambiguity. Practical implications include pairing meme posts with context-expanding features and strengthening digital religious literacy for audiences. Originality/Value: This study contributes an Indonesia-based, cross-religious comparison of Instagram religious memes using a shared coding framework and integrating visual-rhetorical analysis with a typology of bilingual audience response traces.

Abstract

The Ar Ridho Foundation is an institution that actively empowers orphans and the poor through educational programs that emphasize equality, inclusivity, and the elimination of social classes. In the context of multicultural Islamic education, efforts to eliminate social classes are an important aspect that is rarely studied in depth, especially at the level of religious institutional practice. This phenomenon is important to study because it shows how Islamic values of human equality, respect for dignity, and empowerment can be realized through structured educational programs. This study aims to analyze the implementation of multicultural Islamic education at the Ar Ridho Foundation and identify educational empowerment strategies used to eliminate social classes between orphans and the poor and children in general. The research method uses a qualitative approach with a case study, involving in-depth interviews, moderate participant observation, and documentation as data collection techniques. Data analysis is carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions interactively. The results show that the Ar Ridho Foundation implements multicultural Islamic education through a commensurate institutional culture, non-discriminatory social interaction, and educational programs such as tutoring, educational counseling, career guidance counseling, and the provision of technological facilities. These programs have been shown to improve academic ability, self-confidence, and educational opportunities, significantly reducing class barriers. This study recommends expanding educational collaboration, improving learning facilities, and strengthening mentors' capacity as strategic steps to enhance the sustainability of class-based education efforts.

Abstract

The Hajj and Umrah rituals are central acts of worship in Islam, containing intertwined spiritual, social, cultural, economic, and political dimensions. In the context of globalization and advanced modernity, these rituals have undergone significant transformation, from traditional spiritual pilgrimage practices to global religious phenomena mediated by digital technology, the travel industry, and transnational market logic. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of this transformation through the religious studies approach developed by Hillary Rodrigues and John S. Harding, which rejects the reductive dichotomy between insider perspectives (faith, religious experience, and theological commitment) and outsider perspectives (critical academic analysis). This study uses an interdisciplinary qualitative approach with a library research design. Primary data sources include the Qur'an, hadith, and the theoretical works of Rodrigues and Harding, while secondary data sources include scientific journal articles, academic books, and contemporary studies on the Hajj, Umrah, and religion in the digital age. Data analysis is conducted through concept reduction, contextual interpretation, and theoretical synthesis by integrating theological, phenomenological, and sociological perspectives. The results of this study indicate that the Rodrigues–Harding approach allows for a more holistic understanding of the Hajj and Umrah as ritual practices that are simultaneously sacred and social. This study also finds that the commodification and mediatization of rituals in the contemporary era creates a paradox between the ideal of spiritual simplicity and the reality of material splendor, but at the same time opens up new spaces for the formation of global Muslim solidarity, including through digital media. The contribution of this study lies in strengthening the interdisciplinary analytical framework in the study of Islamic rituals that bridges faith and science, and offers a critical reflection on the spiritual meaning of the Hajj and Umrah amidst modern socio-cultural changes.

Abstract

This article examines how religion is reconfigured in the era of digital platforms and proposes a conceptual framework for the mediatization of religion in Indonesia. While existing scholarship on digital religion has provided rich empirical insights, much of it remains fragmented and often limited to specific platforms or practices. This study addresses that limitation by reconstructing the multidimensional framework of Rodrigues and Harding and integrating it with mediatization theory, the phenomenology of religion, and digital religion scholarship. The study employs a conceptual and analytical approach based on a focused literature review and theoretical synthesis. The analysis produces a framework organized around five interrelated components: media logic, algorithmic curation, networked community, authority shift, and ethical governance. Building on this framework, the article advances three conceptual propositions concerning algorithmic shifts in authority, the transformation of sacred experience under digital mediation, and the expansion of epistemic participation alongside its associated risks. To demonstrate the analytical capacity of the framework, the article draws on literature-based illustrations of the digital hijrah movement and online pengajian in Indonesia. These cases show how digital infrastructures reshape authority, ritual practice, and community formation while also generating tensions related to fragmentation, polarization, and misinformation.
