It aims to analyze the use and function of language on signs at Sidoarjo Train Station, Waru Train Station, Purabaya Bus Station, Larangan Bus Station, and Juanda Airport. According to Spolsky and Cooper's theoretical framework, signs are classified based on various criteria forming language taxonomy on signs. The data collection was conducted using observation and interviews. The interview was conducted with one person (passenger) at each location and the observation lasted for four days for all locations, followed by data integration and analysis. The study identified 94 signs, including 62 monolingual (Indonesian and English) and 32 bilingual (Indonesian-English) signs functioning as prohibition, warning, labeling, direction, and information. The findings found the diverse linguistic landscape in the public transportation places in Sidoarjo Regency, which had an impact on communication and navigation for both domestic and foreign passengers. Furthermore, for future research, the researchers suggest using mixed methods for analysis and addressing specific areas, particularly enhancing the clarity and visibility of prohibition signs for passenger safety.

Abstract

As global environmental crises continue to grow, greater attention to indigenous ecological knowledge is urgently needed. This study explores the ecological narratives embedded in the oral tradition of Gending Seblang Olehsari within the Osing community, Banyuwangi, East Java Province, Indonesia, through a decolonial ecolinguistic perspective, and examines its role as cultural resistance against hegemonic environmental discourse. In positioning this study within contemporary ecolinguistic and decolonial scholarship, the research emphasizes the urgency of recovering marginalized ecological epistemologies that have been systematically silenced by colonial and modern development paradigms. Employing qualitative methods, the research analyzes oral texts, engages in participatory observation of rituals, and conducts in-depth interviews with community leaders. This methodological design allows the study to capture not only linguistic structures, but also the socio-cultural, historical, and cosmological dimensions through which environmental meaning is produced and sustained in everyday community practices. The findings demonstrate that Gending Seblang embodies ecological symbols, such as kembang gadhung (toxic flower) and ombak umbul (ocean wave), which reflect the Osing cosmology of harmonious and sustainable human–nature relations. These symbols operate as ecological signifiers that encode ethical principles of restraint, reciprocity, and interdependence between human and non-human life forms, offering an alternative worldview to anthropocentric environmental models. Metaphors including Seblang Lukinta (trance upon nature’s bed) and Layar Kumendhung (critique of ecological colonialism) function as linguistic strategies to preserve local knowledge while resisting exploitative Western logic. Through these metaphors, the Osing people articulate a counter-narrative that challenges the reduction of nature into mere economic resources and reasserts indigenous cosmology as a valid and authoritative system of ecological knowledge. The study concludes that this oral tradition is not merely intangible cultural heritage, but a living knowledge system significant for ecological decolonization movements. As such, Gending Seblang should be understood as an active site of epistemic resistance that continues to shape community identity, environmental ethics, and political consciousness. These insights provide a new perspective on integrating local wisdom into environmental policy and sustainability education. Ultimately, this research demonstrates that the preservation of oral traditions is inseparable from the pursuit of ecological justice, particularly in the context of accelerating environmental crises and the enduring legacy of colonial environmental governance.

Abstract

This article examines critical literacy practices carried out by the informal education community thoughtfully and potentially so that they can be applied to developing the school literacy movement program. Statistically, 95.66% of Indonesia's population can read, but on the other hand, the reading literacy score in the PISA study is still below average. So far, there have been different perspectives regarding literacy as a reading activity and literacy as an activity to process information. These differences result in different interpretations and attitudes in processing information in a text. Critical literacy relates reading analysis skills to the realities faced by students. This study aimed to find patterns of critical literacy carried out by the Ngampar Boekoe community and Jamaah Maiyah Al Manhal about the inherent development of the school literacy movement program. The research method used is qualitative with an auto-ethnographic approach. The data comes from the researcher's personal experience, observation, in-depth interviews and artefacts. Data analysis uses triangulation with a bottom-up pattern to find critical literacy formulas and can be reflected in the school literacy movement program. The results found are in the form of alternative formulations which consist of critical material that can develop students' critical power, dialectical methods filled with a sense of trust, and quality-based evaluation using response journal instruments and written works. The results of this study can be used as policy-making considerations for relevant stakeholders to build the qualifications of a literate society.
