Abstract

This study pioneers the application of forensic linguistics to investigative interviews in Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing enforcement. It aims to identify and systematize the specific linguistic and discursive strategies used by suspects to construct deceptive narratives, thereby developing an evidence-based analytical framework for this underexplored domain of environmental crime. Employing a qualitative case study design within an interpretivist paradigm, the research analyses a corpus of 15 authentic, anonymized investigative interview transcripts from concluded IUU fishing cases in Indonesia. Data were analyzed using a multi-stage forensic linguistic protocol, combining deductive coding informed by established deception markers (e.g., hedging, narrative inconsistency, pragmatic deflection) with inductive thematic analysis to identify context-specific strategies. Analytical rigor was ensured through analyst triangulation and thick description. The analysis reveals a consistent “Four-Pillar” model of deceptive discourse in IUU investigations: 1) Lexical-Pragmatic Evasion (e.g., pervasive hedging, passive constructions, deictic distancing); 2) Narrative Manipulation (e.g., chronological inconsistencies, lack of sensory detail for illicit acts, overly rehearsed formulae); 3) Pragmatic-Discursive Deflection (e.g., failure to answer questions directly, attribution of agency to external forces, appeals to norms); and 4) Socio-Linguistic Masking (e.g., strategic use/omission of technical jargon, feigned linguistic misunderstanding). These interconnected strategies function to obfuscate truth, diffuse responsibility, and exploit the technical and multilingual context of fisheries operations. This study is the first to conduct a dedicated forensic linguistic examination of deception within IUU fishing investigations. It moves beyond generic deception detection models by constructing a context-specific framework that accounts for the unique technical, legal, and operational realities of maritime environmental crime. The research provides both a theoretical contribution to forensic linguistics and a practical, actionable toolkit for enhancing the investigative and prosecutorial processes in fisheries law enforcement.

Abstract

Background of Study:Librarian attitudes significantly influence user satisfaction and engagement in library services. Positive interaction between librarians and users fosters a welcoming environment and enhances service effectiveness. Aims and Scope of Paper:This research aims to explore both the attitudes of librarians in providing services and users’ perceptions of those attitudes at the Tangerang Regency Library and Archives Office. Methods:A qualitative descriptive approach was employed. Data were collected through observation and interviews with three library users selected via purposive sampling. The data analysis followed three steps: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Result:Findings indicate that the average number of visitors to the Tangerang Regency Library and Archives Office from 2022 to 2023 was approximately 136,270. Users generally perceive librarians as friendly and kind. However, users often need to initiate interaction before receiving assistance, indicating a lack of proactive service. This shows that while the overall demeanor of librarians is positive, there remains a gap in attentiveness and sensitivity to user needs. Conclusion:Although librarians are perceived positively in terms of friendliness, service delivery can be improved by fostering a more proactive and responsive approach to user needs. These findings highlight the importance of continuous professional development for librarians to enhance user experience.

Abstract

War flaming constitutes one of the perilous practices prevalent on social media platforms. This might result in discomfort associated with social media usage, leading to melancholy, anxiety, excessive worry, and disturbances in mental health. War Flaming has become a prominent issue that necessitates enhancing digital literacy on social media platforms. This study employed a qualitative methodology, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). Informants were selected using standard case sampling. The selected informants include the Directorate of IKP from the Ministry of Communication and Information of the Republic of Indonesia, SiBerkreasi, digital technology and culture experts, and specialists in social campaigns. The findings indicated that digital literacy building aimed at mitigating war flaming on social media involved creating innovative social campaigns through pertinent language and a human-centric literacy approach. This strategy seeks to engage Generation Z, empowering youth communities as proactive advocates against hoax narratives on social media. It emphasizes collaboration among governmental entities, community leaders, and journalists within the anti-war flaming educational initiative, alongside the optimization of TikTok and Instagram for disseminating positive content, and partnerships with young influencers to promote the significance of digital reputation. Creative digital literacy, facilitated by social campaigns and multisectoral cooperation, effectively mitigates war flaming on social media, enhances Gen Z awareness, and promotes mental health through affirmative material.

Abstract

Echo Chamber and Filter Bubble are two subjects now under extensive discussion. The growing prevalence of social media in recent years underscores the potential effects of the Echo Chamber and Filter Bubble phenomena. One of them is the conflict raging on social media. The attributes of the Echo Chamber and Filter Bubble can influence the prevalence of war flame on social media. This study aimed to examine the impact of the Echo Chamber and Filter Bubble on War Flaming. This study used a quantitative methodology to investigate the relationship among the three ideas. The sample was chosen through selective sampling, comprising 100 respondents identified as flame perpetrators. The study's results indicate a significant correlation between Echo Chamber and Filter Bubble phenomena and the prevalence of war flame on social media. This study demonstrates that Echo Chamber and Filter Bubble significantly influence War Flaming. Echo Chamber (X1) and Filter Bubble (X2) collectively account for 41.8% of the variance in War Flaming (Y). The results indicate that preventing war escalation is challenging due to the existence of echo chambers and filter bubbles, unless stringent content restriction policies are implemented by social media companies and enhanced self-awareness is cultivated from an early age through familial, social, and educational influences.
