Abstract

Most of rice seeds experience after ripening problem which then result in seed dormancy. This kind of dormancy could be broken through various types of treatments, including storaging in dry place for certain period. This study was aimed to evaluate the combination between seed water content and storage duration to induce the seed germination of local genotype brown rice, Daro Merah. Various levels of seed water content (6-10, 11-15, 16-20 and 21-25 %) and storage duration (2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks) were evaluated to identify its effect on Daro Merah seed germination. Data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance where significance were further proceeded using Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test with a p>0.05. The results showed that seed germination of Daro Merah reached 95 % at five days after seeding when the seed water content was maintained at 6-10% and stored for 8 weeks. After 14 days, the germination reached 99 % and most of the seeds showed some shoots emerged from the soil. Keywords: Brown rice, germination, seed water content, storage duration, Daro Merah

Abstract

Population growth rates cause an increase in food demand, but the planting area is decreasing due to land-use change. The land available to be utilized by farmers is mostly suboptimal land. The disadvantages of suboptimal land are low pH values (4.7) and a small number of nutrients (Nitrogen = 0.11%, Phosphorus = 0.45 ppm, very low Carbon, very high Aluminum, and medium Cation exchange capacity) and for increasing the value of suboptimal land can be given organic fertilizer such as cattle manure and kieserite. This study aims to determine the effect of cattle manure and kieserite on rice growth with the SRI planting system in suboptimal land. The study was carried out in farmers' paddy fields at Ambacang Market, Kuranji District, Padang from June to October 2019. This experiment uses a completely randomized design (CRD). Data were analyzed by the F test at a 5% significance level. If it is significantly different, it is continued with the Honestly Significant Difference test (HSD) at the 5% significance level. The results showed that the application of cattle manure and kieserite can increase the height of rice plants and the number of tillers.

Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an important food crop that is the staple food of more than half of the world's population because it contains nutrients that the body needs. Information on the genetic diversity of local rice scattered in the Kuantan Singingi Regency is still not available. Due to this fact, the genetic diversity of local rice can be identified by DNA analysis. A DNA-based molecular marker that can be applied as a plant genetic marker is SRAP. The SRAP (Sequence Related Amplified Polymorphism) marker system is one of the powerful molecular tools for the clarification of individual sex and estimating the genetic diversity of plant species. This study aims to determine the genetic relationship of rice plants in the Kuantan Singingi Regency through SRAP markers. Twenty-four (24) local genotype samples were used in this study. Observational data were processed using Ms. software. Excel and (NTSYS-pc) version 2.02. The results obtained 17 fragments in Primer M, which resulted in a similarity analysis between 71% to 100%. There are two (2) groups at 75% similarity, then there are five (5) groups at 81% similarity and there are four (4) groups that have 100% similarity. The results of this study are expected to be taken into consideration in developing rice breeding strategies in the future.

Abstract

West Sumatra was declared as a center for Indonesian cocoa in the western portion. Almost all areas in West Sumatra are suitable for cocoa cultivation, so the cocoa planting area covers almost all the districts in the province. However, West Sumatran Cocoa production decline occurs because cocoa plantations are still mostly cultivated with smallholder plantations. The occurrence of land conversion and reduced land carrying capacity, including soil fertility, is due to the continuous use of inorganic fertilizers, which results in a decrease in the ecological quality of the land. Efforts to improve land conditions biologically by utilizing soil biotechnology. One of the soil microbes that can be utilized is Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF). AMF that live in a symbiotic mutualism with plant roots and helps the absorption of plant nutrients and live in various places. The study aimed to identify arbuscular mycorrhiza Cocoa rhizosphere three districts, West Sumatra province, from the month of November 2020 to May 2021. The results showed the number of spores and diversity of AMF. The number of spores was 67-218 spores per 20 g soil. The root colonization was in the range of 21.3 - 24.6%. While the AMF diversity before trapped found three types of sport Glomus sp., Acaulospora sp., dan Gigaspora sp

Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa. L) is the main food crop in Kuantan Singingi District, but stressful conditions such as drought often cause severe yield losses. The problem of drought never gets a solution, so that many farmers cultivate paddy rice but the planting technique is tugal. This review article aims to resolve this issue. Resolving issues in rainfed lowland rice cultivation, in drought conditions, then it can be done by integrating several relevant disciplines. But on the occasion of this review the authors focus on explaining one solution that can be done in developing or improving the local rice genotype characteristics of Kuantan Singingi Regency. The effort to obtain types of strains, cultivars, varieties (from a cross between local genotypes with superior varieties with certificates) that are able to adapt to drought conditions. In this writer the strain is obtained through a series of activities ranging from exploration, collection, identification characteristics (morphological characteristics and molecular / DNA characteristics), description of local genotypes, then hybridization or biotechnology (Transgene), and finally the selection process. Exploratory research and characteristics can use survey methods by purposive random sampling (purposive random sampling). Data is collected by identifying the characteristics of local rice plants directly to the field. The observations made were (1) geographical coordinates location, (2) morphological observations based on the rice descriptors manual according to the Ministry of Agriculture (2013) and IRRI (2007). The observed characters are qualitative and quantitative characters towards the character of grain and rice. Observation data were processed using Ms. software. Excel and (NTSYS-pc) version 2.02. The observations showed a diversity of morphological characters both quantitative and qualitative of grain and rice. Keywords : Local rice, Development, Kuantan Singingi Regency

Abstract

Potatoes are one of the world's five food crops in the form of tubers and have many benefits. One type of potato developed in Indonesia is red potatoes because they have a high nutritional content and are more susceptible to plant pest organisms. An experiment was conducted in Nagari Selayo Tanang Bukit Sileh, Lembang Jaya, Solok, West Sumatra, Indonesia from May to August 2017. The effect of three indigenous rizobacteria (A2.1b2, A3.1a5 and B1.2a2) and three types of manure, both individually and in combination, on the growth and yield of red potatoes was studied. A two way factorial experiment with a completely randomized design and three replicates was used. Chicken, quail and cattle manure were applied at a dose of 30 tons per hectare. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance and comparison of mean using the Honestly Significant Difference test at the 5% level. There was no interaction between rizobacterial isolates and manure on the growth and yield of red potatoes. All isolates gave similar results with respect to plant growth, but isolates A2.1b2 give the best yields. Chicken manure increased fresh weight of tubers by 11.73 ton per hectare compared to quail and cattle manure.
